Hi. Does anybody know what states do NOT accept Excelsior? I'm getting confused. I don't think California does, and some state require that you work for a while before they'll take you...
I am asking because my husband is in the military, and it looks like we'll be moving every 2 years for the next 6-8, and I have NO IDEA where we'll be going.

Hi -- there are multiple existing threads here that discuss that question; if you do a search and review them, you'll find the info you're looking for.
Best wishes.

And the info changes often too. Best bet would be to check out the state board of nursing site in whichever state you want to live in? Good luck.

I have 2 resources to suggest. #1 may be most useful and uptodate, but also requires copius research on your behalf to figure which states require what at what time or EC grads.

Also, EC publishes a State Boards Booklet - Your Guide to Becoming an RN, which lists the special requirements, but I don't know how often it is updated. You can order or download one free from Exceslior. Also, Rosemary in the state boards dept at EC is a very nice and helpful resource.

I know if you are newly enrolled in excelsior you cannot work in CA. My wife went thru it in 2004 and she is not eligible. Also I know FL you are not eligible to start work as new grad unless you were an LPN before. You must first go work in another state for a yr, then come to FL.

Here in Florida, you can only sit Directly for the Florida NCLEX if you are already a licensed LPN. I have talked to other members that already worked past this. You take another state's NCLEX (example N. Carolina) and then immediatly apply for endorsement. As of next year Excelsior is revamping the program to include PT assessment and management of multiple PTs. This should help to appease CA, FL and any other state that has concerns. Working in Florida, you have to jump through a couple hoops to get in, however it can be done. When in doubt call Excelsior and/or the state BON.
Good luck!

I don't know how updated this is, but a few years ago I read on EC's website that Illinois does not recognize it.

Yep - there is a member in a similar situation who checks in here from time to time. He lives in FL, applied for MN licensure, did not work a day in MN, then got an FL license by endorsement. I guess sometimes you have to play the game.
