Which shift do you prefer and why? What do you consider to be the advantages/disadvantages?
My husband works around my schedule so I don't need to consider the time that fits my family life (no children either). Just curious to see what your reasoning is.. also, since I've never worked in the health care setting before, I was wondering if there is a pay difference between the two as well.. thanks!

Welll,, considering you have no children 11-7 would work good. That schedule would still allow some sort of social life. 3-11 is ok if you have problems sleeping during the day but leaves a lot to be desired since most of your friends and family are home during those hours.
Myself i dont like 8 hour shifts anyway, i prefer 12's because it leaves more free time during the week and you dont have to split up your "weekend" wherever that falls. But i guess if i had to pick,, i would probly prefer 3-11 because i dont sleep well during the day although i tend to stay up late when im home in the evening. I can go to bed by 1 and be ready for the day by noon, no problem.

If those were my only two choices I would take the 11-7. If I worked 3-11 I would never see my family, between work and school.

i prefer to work 11-7. i work in a busy emerg dept and most of the patients come in after office hours..very seldom that i've worked the 3-11 shift.never worked in a health care setting?..well maybe i would suggest the 3-11 shift..and take it from there..its difficult to do the graveyard shift if u haven't been sleep deprived before.
there is evening and night shift premium..ours is just 25 cents difference($1.30/hr for evening and $1.55/hr for nights).
its also mandatory for us to work every other weekend..weekend premium is $1.70/hr.
i'm in toronto, canada
goodluck and hope you enjoy it!

I have worked 3-11 for over 13 years ,I created a life around it, I loved going shopping and not standing in line to check out you get in and out faster, You can exercise before work and not be so tired , if you are tired in the morning, sleep in! If you can't fall aseep when you get home sleep in in the morning. I could clean my house before work the day before a day off then my day off was mine!(no one was home so it didn't bother any one but the pets). I hated 11-7.. I was always tired and trying to get caught up on my sleep but I really didn't sleep alot with 3-11 I actually set my alarm so I would get up early to exercise and get things done before going in, this way when I got home I was in bed and asleep within an hour. I am presently on 7-3, a new world it is nice being done with my working day at 3 but I am finding out that I am not exercising as mush as I like , hate shopping in the evening. but really like the staffing on days more help, more experienced help ect so I don't know if I'll stay on the shift but I will give it a year before I go back cause it is easy to stay with the familar. I did need the change and so did my family.........good luck:)

I HATE 11-7. It's such a crap shift. I don't think you have any real life outside of nursing when you work that because you can't just switch back to a daytime schedule on your 2 days off. At least I can't. I would work days or eves if I had to work 8 hour shifts. I prefer 7P-7A though.

I don't like 11-7 because my 3yr old daughter would not let me sleep during the day. I would have to sleep during her nap time. But if I would have school age children or no children at all, I would pick 11-7.

I LOVE 11-7!! The patients are sleeping!! No management in the building. Get lots of charting, skin assessments etc done on nocs. I have 4 children all in school. I come home, get them to school, go to bed and get up when the youngest gets off the bus.
I also work days 8-3 Mon-Thurs and 8-4 on Fridays when the new school year starts. I HATE 12 hour shifts!!!
Come on August 14th!!

I work 0700-1900 or 1900-0700 in an ICU setting. I don't mind either. If I was in your situation, the 11-7 would be ideal.

Not in my hospital! For some reason, most of our patients are up and behaving like it is 3pm.

Isn't that the truth, tho!! I've mostly worked nites thru the years, but in post-anesthesia I worked 1 to close. Close could be anywhere from 7P to midnite. Most of the time, tho, I was home in time to spend time with my DH.
Recently I started working 11-7 in LTC. I was telling my DIL about it, and how busy it was sometimes, and she couldn't imagine why it was so busy with the old folks sleeping all night! ROFLMOBO!:rotfl: :rotfl:
I have never been a 'day' person - I don't care for all the hub-bub that goes on - too many people around!

I kind of liked 3-11 before I had kids. (In LTC setting). The residents tended to be more relaxed and their families visited more on that shift, which usually made my job easier. I don't know why, but it always just seemed more relaxed and laid back.
In the hospital, 3-11 seems to be feast or faminie. Either nothing going on or getting slammed. I'd prob. pick 3-11. I'd rather be reieved by the night shift than the perky day shift when I'm a zombie.
