Seeking advice from current RN's

I'm finishing my BSN pre-req's and will only be taking the core nursing classes for the remainder of school and wondered if there were any classes or specialized courses you recommend taking before graduating and going to work?

..i need extra hours for this summer and I noticed that Medical Terminology is not part of the BSN program...I would assume that course would be helpful so I'm going to take it. I also plan to refresh my spanish as well.....Any courses not required by your bsn/rn program that you wish you would have taken in school?....Thanks for your advice..

Is your BSN course one that has (organic) chem prerequisites? I'd say definitely get those done even if the degree only has requirements on the bio side :)

Any Psych courses are always useful too, I loved social psych and a course called "biology, behavior and learning" (but I did Psych undergrad so I'm in love with all that stuff hehe :D ) -- of course, extra stats/math will never set you back either!

Those are great. Med term: hopefully they will make it complex and make you write case reviews etc. My class started with 60 and in 2 wks it went down to 28. LOL! It will blow your mind how many RNs don't really know, well, anything. You want to read a surgeon or whomever's report and be good to go!!

Non-verbal communicatio, conflict resolution and abnormal psych will all come in handy.

I'd say more psych classes as every patient has a psych component to his care.

I was forced into PE by my college, but I took a course that came in very handy---weight lifting. (Yes, I'm a female.)

I am a student at Purdue University and son of a nurse. I am pursuing a degree in Public Health and am doing a research project on Nurses and stress if anyone who has time to fill out a short survey it would be greatly appreciated and feel free to share with others the link will be below. It wasn't required, but I took it as an elective, a class on AIDS/HIV. Just lecture, no clinicals. Some states actually require it for licensure, and it was very interesting.

Consider pursuing a minor in anything that interests you. Health science (basis for grad work in public health), any foreign language, and psych are popular choices for nurses.

Pathophys, if you can get it. Spanish for health care providers would be invaluable. Any course on time management, speaking skills and interpersonal skills would be VERY useful.
