The 5 "Rights"

Because medication safety encompasses so many areas, it's helpful to have an intuitive way to break down the process. One way of doing so is to examine the "five rights." Says Dr Lister, "In medicine, doctors and nurses often learn about the five rights of drug dispensing: right medication, right dose, right patient, right route, and right time. This is also a good starting place for doing QI with your medication safety practices facility-wide." We asked a number of experts to expand on each of these five "rights." Here's what they said.

the 5 rights:

right patient

right medication

right dose

right route

right time

Yes I believe we all know what the five rights are, where are you going with this ,or do you truly not know what they are, I hope you are not a nurse.

Along with learning the five rights it's important to note if any of them are wrong it is considered a medication error.

These rights are the way of ensuring you correctly administer medicine.

There are actually 8 now..grrrrrrrrrrrr!

Right:

Pt

mar

This stuff is in every basic nursing book - and can be found with a simple search engine query. Do you have specific questions regarding the five rights, or were you looking for someone to answer a homework question? ;)

Thanks for Tramp acronym. Love it!

Nothing is worse than staring at the 5 fingers on you hand as your instructor asks you "What are the Five Rights" getting nervous and stammering for the last one.

Add- order and

situation.

As in, is the order written correctly? Does the ordered dose fall within the dosing limits? Is the order appropriate for the situation?

Good grief, that would make 10 rights!:chair:
