How long do you change a resident?
When I first started as am aide, it probably took me about the same time to change an incontinent resident. No worries. It will get better! By the time I quit being an aide, I was changing residents in under 5 minutes.

CNEA/ACEN Accredidation?
I have contacted the BON, but I haven't heard back yet. On their website I have only found I found info for ACEN and CCNE. I am hoping to hear back from others with experience while I'm waiting to hear back from the BON!

CNEA/ACEN Accredidation?
Is there a difference between these two accredidations? Can you still sit for the NCLEX-RN with the both accredidations? I am asking these questions because I am looking into a few of the nursing schools around where I live, and most have the ACEN accredidation and 99% of nurses have graduated from theseveral colleges, but there are two that have a CNEA accredidation. I know only one nurse who has graduated from this school. I'm not sure if it used to be ACEN accredited, but I know it lost its accredidation for ACEN in 2014. Any information is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

16 year old CNA...
Not sure what state you ate in, but I am in Utah and I worked with a lot of CNA's who started when they were 16/were 16 when I worked there!

What is being a CNA like?
It hard work. You're on your feet the entire shift. You have to be kind of fit as to not tire out too quickly and you will likely be permanent exhausted. But it also very rewarding work. You're personal helping our older generation and it's hard not to get attached. You will make mistakes at first but that's how everyone learns, don't be discouraged, power through!

Question about upgrading from CNA to Medical Assistant (please read)
Every place I have worked as an MA, offers the position to CNAs with training. She may just get less pay since she isn't a certified medical assistant.
-
Do you have a free charge nurse on your unit?
When I worked as an aide, one if the nurses (either on the north, or south side) was the charge nurse. On top of their own patient load.

Hoyer lift policies
When I worked in a LTC, it was required to have two people to use a hoyer.

Would you take a pay cut to be a CNA?
Absolutely not. I have worked as a CNA and it was hard, exhausting and underapprecaited work. I made 10 dollars an hour both in a SNF and hime health. Now I am a CMA, and I make 12.50 per hour and I enjoy this job much more. Although, I am glad that ive worked as an aide as a PP said, a lot of nurses don't ever have the experience and I think it really does make some one a better nurse if they really understand what an aide does.

CNA Training - while pregnant
When I worked in a facility, I had a cowirker who worked as an aide until the night she delivered! I did not know anything about her pregnancy but I don't assume she had any restrictions or I don't think she would have been working that long.

Advice from CNAs and Nurses. Working in LTC, feeling confused/overwhelmed.
I've mostly worked in LTC as an aide. I first worked in a facility and it was a rough forst month or two. It took me a while to grt down what each pt needed and what they could or preferred to do on their own. When I first started, there was a resident who had been at the facility for a long time. She has her favorite aids and aids she would not work with. When I first worked with her she hated me. She judged my work very harshly and would scream at me almost every night (I worked mostly swing shift). In time I became on of her favorite aids and she would request me to come and help her over others. I was always calm and patient with her. I never let her get to me and especially never let it show any hint. I always ask and make sure everything is how they like it. The same thing happened with a pt I worked with when I worked in home health as an aide. She was a nasty woman and would often verbally abuse the aids. She did this to me and I let her know that it hurt my feelings, whether it actually did or not. She eventually became nicer to me. I, again, always Mae sure everything was how she liked it and asked questions about what she liked or wanted frequently. I elven came to her house, off the clock, and checked in with her after an ER visit.

How much are you making as a Medical Assistant
I work for an independant doctor and he does not pay well. I am here for now, I'm 20 weeks pregnant and I have not had any luck yet trying to get a new job while pregnant, but once baby is born I plan on finding a new MA job. I love in northern UT and I get $12/hr. This is where I was hired right out of my externship, so no experience, but he pays every other MA the same wage.

What if you don't get into a nursing program?
Radiology school is my back up. I will apply for 4 nursing programs once my pre reqs and some general courses are done. One is an as program while the it her three are lpn programs, that allow me to bridge to RN, asn programs if I have the next set of pre reqs done, which I plan on starting right now because they are needed for the as program anyways. But if I can't get into any nursing g programs I will go to school for Radiology.

Did you choose nursing because it was your "calling"?
I chose nursing because I grew up with a bunch of medical personnel in my family. There are like 3 nurses in my family and when they describe their jobs to me it excites me and I am always wanting to learn more! I am currently a CMA and I work with RN's and I want to do what they can do.

Unplanned pregnancy during nursing school?
Also, this will NOT sabotage your chances of doing well in school! I completed an associates degree while parenting my son. He was almost 1 when I started and almost 3 when I finished. I did well in school while working and parenting him. Though I could not have succeeded without my husband. I think a good support team is vital while having such a full plate to handle. If you can not find that in your parents, I hope you have some good friends to help you when you need them!

Unplanned pregnancy during nursing school?
Even if it will be a hard time coming, and way unexpected. .. congratulations! I am currently 18 weeks pregnant and I will be starting pre requisite classes in the Spring. I still plan on attending school in the summer as well. I have much different circumstances from yours though and I am sure that our stories will not be compelted the same. Do you really believe that your parents will kick you out of their home while you are pregnant and enrolled in college? I hope not, that does not seem like a very supportive family IMO. Maybe you can arrange for daycare to take place outside of their home. Do you have any friends with teenage children that would be interested in watching your child while you go to class? I have a very low charge in home daycare for my current child and my current pregnancy will attend this daycare as well. You can get child support from the father and use that to pay for daycare. I think you could work some type of part time job around your school schedule as well. I recommend getting more advice from a parenting website as well. I am sure there will be some crafty type mom's who can give you a whole range of ideas for this situation!

CNAs give medications
When I working in a nursing home, I was not allowed to give medications as a CNA. Only the LPN and RN's were allowed. I would assist with positioning the pt and passing of supplies during dressing changes and caths but did not do the work myself, again only the LPN and RN's were allowed. When I was in home health, it was only different because I would make sure the pt took their mess while I was their.. but just monitor not physically Gove it to them if that makes sense. But now I'm working in an office as a CMA and the physician has a CNA doing the work of a CMA... drawing up medications, giving shots I'M and she documents it as a CMA because here CNA classes do not go over medications what so ever. She's not qualified to do that. I'm not sure if it's considered illegal because a lot of his staff are doing things like these because they are trained to do so.

How did you decide which school (s) to take prerequisites for?
I live in Utah. There are quite a few nursing programs available here. I am having a hard time deciding which prerequisites to take for the multiple colleges in this area! I am currently enrolled in Weber State University to take my prerequisites. I am looking around at other schools to prepare for their nursing programs to have a better chance of getting into a nursing program sooner than later and not put all my coins in one bowl, if that makes sense. Most nursing programs here have almost the same prerequisites, but some of them have prerequisites that are more different than the other nursing programs offered around here. Honestly I don't want to spend extra semesters preparing for a nursing program that I am not likely to get into, but I want to keep my options open.
