Medication error Phenytoin
Hi Kylie Im a grad RN as well, 3 months in. A couple of weeks ago I gave a double dose of methylpred IV. As Im sure youre feeling now, my heart stopped and I felt sick for days afterwards. I went back to work the next day, wanted to see how my patient was going, then took the next day as a sick day because I was then due for days off. Reflect on it, but then you need to move on and push it out of your head so you can go back to work. Everyone will tell you éveryone makes a medication error, just as long as you've learnt from it'and it is true. Chin up Kylie, I know how you are feeling and I'm sure once you get your confidence back you will be able to continue learning to be a great nurse!

Pediatric/Adolescent refusal to take meds?
On my adolescent ward we explain to the kids why they should take it, if they still wont,we write in the notes that they refused and get on the phone with their mum, usually the kids never win then! Our kids with psych issues (generally eating disroders/ depression) if they refuse and their parents and DP/ case manager can't talk them around, they get placed under the Mental Health Act, and we then enforce treatment on them, meds given IM if possible.

How do you handle clients that are too affectionate?
Ive been working with kids/ teenagers / young adults for a couple of years as a carer (equivalent to a CNA), I did find some kids would become overly attached, affectionate, physical etc. Make sure you reinforce to them that you are working, you are married (if you are) , you dont like being touched, and repeat this to them when necessary. Ive been a nurse for a couple of months now and find it alot easier now I wear a uniform and don't act in the role of 'leisure buddy'etc, which the kids often equate with 'friend'.

She is so dear to me...
Kids with CF are so special. They are not here on earth for all that long, but they touch so many people and make us remember what is important.

A phantom poo
Today I was assisting a pt to transfer himself from the bed to commode. He has wearing tshirt, pad and jocks. Transfer was uneventful, assisted him with his shower, got back to the patient's 5 bed room, went back to the side of the bed looked down, and between my feet was the hugest BA. I swear it wasn't there when we left for the bathroom! None of the roommates seemed to notice it was there, I was so shocked! It kept me laughing all day, Im just thankful I didnt step in it!

Eating Disorder Patients
Hi TLC I work in a peds hosp. in the adolescent ward. We have a lot of patients with eating disorders. I enjoy working with the girls, my problem is that the philosophy on the ward is that we do not treat the ED, we treat them for dehydration, or hypotension etc. They have the psychs come to see them, and we give them NG feeds. We are not a psych ward, but it just seems strange that we dont treat the illness, only the effects of it (hope that all makes sense!). Do you find many of your pts/ clients recover? Ours never seem to get better, they are discharged even if they are not eating. What is their treatment like?

Flirtatious student
You will find this at school, you will find it in the workplace. I know its annoying, but try not to let these types of things annoy you. In the end, she makes a fool of herself... and it probab ly makes for a good laugh for you!

Any LPN's out there working "private duty"
I do this kind of work , but am called a nursing assistan (Im in australia). I really enjoy working in the community, still very demanding work, but I have learnt alot, and had some wonderful experiences. It has also worked well for me by fitting into my study schedule, I can work a 24 hour shift, and that is all I need to work for the week.

Feeling incompetent
Im starting my final 5 weeks of prac on Monday, and there is so much I still dont know. Im sure I will feel the same when I start in my new job too. Completely normal to feel like this. You just need to seek out supportive nurses to help you learn.

Hospital nursing assistant
Thinks are soooo different in Australia! I am a nursing assistant with an agency. they require us to be in our final year of study to be an RN. We do personal care- showering toilet, feed, but mostly we 'guard' the pt, ie I sit on my bum for most of the shift to ensure the patient doesnt get out of bed. I get $20 an hr AM, $24 pm and time and a half on weekends (in Aus dollars.) I love my agency!

Ugh!!!!
What got me through in my most busiest times of school was having one shift a week as a carer overnight, I would do twelve hours, and be only epected to stay awake for 3 hours. The other 9 hours, as long as I was in the clients home I could study or do whatever. Could you do something like that?

pants to interview
I wore a suit with trousers instead of a skirt in july this year for my job interview as an RN, and I got the job. I think as long as what you are wearing looks smart and professional, it is better to wear trousers if that is what you feel more comfortable in.
