Eating healthy on 21 dollars per week...
I agree with Jolie. And good point mjlrn, who earned the money. Yes, some have more advantages than others. Warren Buffet for example is giving away money yet what he has left continues to make more and more. It is still his money. I would have a tough time on $21.00 a week for food, but I'd certainly take responsibility for why I had to live on 21.00 and not keep asking for more handouts.

Patient Accusations...
A lot of patients don't tell the truth. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes by mistakes. Document, document, document!!!!! I work at an office and we have patients who want to be seen without an appointment so they just show up and say someone from our office called them. :flamesonb I've had patients tell me one thing and the Doctor another. It happens and it is not pleasant.

Question... are we supposed to help? Good Samaritan.
You know in this day and age I would be cautious about offering help outside my place of employment and to strangers. I have a family to think about. My health and our livlihood could be affected by helping that stranger. I also feel I am a good nurse to my patients. Lets not blast someone who is upfront about her actions. They are her opinions, not ours.

Humidify low flow oxygen?
The only benefit to humidify low flow oxygen would be the subjective one by the patient. "It doesn't feel as dry with it on". I do not know if studies would show an increase in nosocomial infections in patients who use bubble humidifiers or not. The bubble humidifiers would be an extra cost to the hospital. If it makes a patient feel better and doesn't hurt them, I guess the only question would be is it "worth" it. I think this would be a small price to pay for someones comfort.

Helping the goof offs
SCRN1, Thank-you for putting the patient first. Sometimes the goof-offs forget this. I know it doesn't help your frustration any but, the patient that you helped with appreciates that you were there for them. Keep up the good (excellant) work.

Senario Help
I have a question about the scenerio. She had 1000ml in 6 hours and 1170 out in those 6 hours. Did I interpret that right or am I missing something? She certainly wouldn't be fluid overloaded so I guess I would need some information regarding her hydration status. Really want to know.

Trying to cope....
She is not ready to settle down with you. Her career is still first in her heart. She is doing this for her future not yours. Talking from experience, how long would you wait for her? I agree with Clee1. Wishing you the best.:balloons:

Calling All Nurses.....How did you......
L&D maybe difficult to get in. I would try that first because that is truly where you want to be. Another suggestion is Float Pool. You'll get to see many areas and sometimes I'm sure you will get floated to L&D. Another area is Outpatient 24. Most are surgical patients who will hopefully go home after 24 hours. Do not go to an area you don't like. It would be a waste of everyone's time and talent. It is hard to orientate someone who doesn't want to work there.

second career nurses/students, input pls!
I am a second career nurse. I was/am a RRT. I went back to school at the age of 40. Most of my prerequisits were counted from college 20 years ago. My grade point average was a 2.6. I had to take a few more prequisits and received A's in them.. From experience I agree with what Quickbeam says. And boy, do those fresh out of highschool make you feel old! Good Luck!!

Job loss, domestic violence, help on advice for getting back on the horse!!!!!!
How old are your children? Can you sell one of the homes just to get out from under it. How about loan consolidation? There are some reputable companies out there. Is child care an issue? A job at MacDonalds may not pay all your bills but it will show lenders you are willing to work. At least until you find a nursing job. You must have some good background if you managed an office. A job will help you get through this mess by focusing on other things. I can't imagine how tough this is for you and my heart goes out to you.

Horrible LTC & boss, and a recurrence of cancer
rehab nurse, I am so sorry for your plight. You must be so overwhelmed. Please take one day at a time. The ones who left that mud hole appreciated you. We one this board appreciate you, I appreciate you. Good nurses who care are so hard to find. That said, think hard about what is important to you and put your plans in that direction. One thing at a time. You are most important. Kian:loveya:

Dumped in America
I agree with you elkpark. It's great for people to find the problems and let others be aware of them but, what are their solutions? Who is held ultimately responsible?

What part of pt care gets overlooked most often
I've had this converstation with other nurses and we agree it is oral care. We can't tell you why for sure. Maybe the nurses thought the aids took care of it and the aids thought the nurses did?

nurses getting consents signed?
I agree with SCRN1. That is how we do it in clinic.

Question....
That is a great question. It really makes you critically think. Granted it would be much easier if we knew the symptoms. Otherwise let the debate begin. I think Vfib 1, A-fib 2 (due to the possibility of emboli), Sinus brady 3 because it can require more treatment than sinus tach -4. ( A good bowel movement could take care of sinus tach, you know the vagal maneuver. IMHO.

feel guilty not contributing
I wouldn't give anything. I would have tried to get along when we first worked together and when that failed I would move on. Then when she left I would feel my contribution was trying to work with at the beginning. No guilt.

How are you judgemental?
I have no patience for people who do not help themselves. The smokers who say they can't quit but want samples of inhalers because they can't afford them. The 300 lb short people with hip and knee problems who don't want to be helped to lose weight, just do surgery and pass the pie. Also posters who tell us we should be non judgemental on a post that asked for our judgements. Go figure!

Do you document errors?
Document what was running in the IV, how fast, when, how much did the patient receive and that you removed it and started an infusion of NS. Document pt. assessment and that the Dr. was notified, when, what he ordered. Keep it accurate and simple. Do not chart why you think it happened or that you didn't notice it the first time around, or what you should have done. You made a mistake. Be a professional and own it, learn from it, and go on.

Learning Disabled Students
I have a son who has a "learning disability". He is very compassionate and kind and has a great sense of humor. That being said, I do not see him as being capable of the quick critical thinking skills that are necessary to be a safe nurse or one I would want taking care of my family members. Of course, there are different levels of learning disabilities and you didn't say where your classmate was classified.

"I don't want to do bed side nursing"...SAY WHAT!
The profession of nursing requires all types. I love nursing just for that reason. I do not think you have to work the "floor" to pay your dues. Working the floor gives great experience but I don't think it is necessary to have to be a good nurse or a good NP.

Calling on all DNSes for opinion
Ask your DNS. Did she explain how you were expected to handle it? If not, ask her how she would handle it. Make sure she knows you did not witness the abuse. You only heard about it 2nd hand and did not have an opportunity to address it before you were called to her office. This doesn't seem fair. The other CNA has a duty to her profession and her patients not to let abuse take place. Aren't we all supposed to be patient advocates? Is it not our responsibility to protect those in our care? If my family was being abused and someone knew it and yet didn't do anything I'd be pressing charges against them as well as the abuser.

Advice please
I was a RRT also when I went back to school for my RN. I was expected to start nights after orientation even though I had always been on days as a therapist. I'm working in a Pulmonary Clinic as a nurse. Really nice fit! Hospice and Home Health is also an excellent position for our skills. You have some very unique skills to offer to patients. Good Luck!

New Nurse Needs Advice- ASAP.
You need to work at what will make you happy. If you like the hospital better, go for it. Make sure you have one job before you give up another if possible. If you are a good nurse they will take you back. I don't like to work nights and would not take a night job. I can understand you not wanting to work them. Of course we all have to do what we have to do.

Made a med error
It sounds like the system needs to be changed. Unfortunately mistakes are going to happen because we are human. I am glad the patient was okay. If this is the only mistake you make in your career it would be rare indeed. The director was WRONG to confront you as was done. It will make it hard for others who make mistakes to want to come forward. She did more damage than you did IMHO. Don't beat yourself up. Accept, learn from it and move on. The director needs to look harder at the system that allows mistake like this to happen.

Second Career Nurses (30+ years old)
I picked nursing because I was burned out in my first profession yet still wanted to stay in the health care field. Job security and good pay. I will stay in nursing because of job security, good pay, and I don't have the drive to try a 3rd career. Right now I have a Monday through Friday job, no weekends, no holidays and work with a Doctor who is polite and respectful and appreciative of my services. I enjoy working with patients and helping them out.
