Funny/happy NICU moments needed
the 24 and 4/7 wkr now on jet and INO, plus a morphine drip and maybe we're titrating dopamine who still manages to squirt the back of the isolette just as you want to change the wee-pee diaper. Any baby who manages to flip the bird while sleeping. Each and every baby you see at the reunion melts everyone's heart.

For Fun - Things You Want to Buy Once You're a Nurse
I want to go to Paris - with my girl friends and eat lots of cheese, not feel guilty, and then go to the Italian Riviera and have someone bring me breakfast in bed. Then I want to have a massage, and sleep uninterupted by small people, or husbands or phones, or cats or my charge nurse asking me to come in early. thats all. oh and a lifelong supply of good chocolate for PMS sx.

SHOES: Are Dansko comfortable?
I love my Dansko's I have many pairs and have been wearing them for about 15 years. I have worn clogs all my life and like the flexible sole the best. I also go to a store and try in pairs. They are hand made - all natural glue etc, so I might by a left from one box and a right from the other. I also wear Sigvaris or Mediven compression stockings during my shift as I stand most of the night and sometimes sit on that rare break. I have tried Klogs and they're okay, my feet burn. Crocs give me shin splints. I have a pair of MBT's that I like - but only if I've had enough sleep the day before. (I'm a night nurse). The MBT's made me feel dizzy the first 4 hrs and then it took about 5 shifts to feel okay. Hands down, Dansko's win the day. :redpinkhe

Deciphering ABG's
remember "go to ROME" Respiratory opposite, metabolic equal" but if you're in the baby land those numbers aren't quite the same. Acidotic numbers for adults are okay for premies!

Comfortable Nursing shoes
I actually like the Dansko sport the best. Crocs feel great and squishy, but my shins ache by hour 8! ( I do 12's) I alternate with Crocs and clogs, and put Dr. Scholls for back pain in my Crocs and this helps. I suppose if I went to Yoga more that would help too!

I was a ______ prior to being a nurse/student nurse
I was a Prep Cook, Secretary, Baby Nanny, Photographer's Assistant, then CNA while in nursing school. I've also been a mom for 13 years. I graduate next Friday!!!! 12/14/07 with a BSN and plan to go back to my babies in neonatology! We all do better with more nurses who love their patients - congrats to all the new RN's!:balloons:

Why did you take up nursing? What's your story?
when my spouse had yet another devastating injury from his beloved sport, I decided I had to go back to finish nursing school so I could be able to take care of my children. Along the route, I realized I really loved this path, and foud a way that I could matter AND make fabulous friends.

My story - returning to school, would love to hear positive experiences as an RN
I went back to nursing school for my BSN at age 37. I am 40 and will graduate in 3 semesters! I have three daughters now 12, 8.5 & 4.5. I have been asked at least twice a week, "how do you do it?" "why do you want to change your career?" Well my answer is always the same. "I had to make a change somewhere." I had to be able to support my children and have a job that was meaningful and satisfied my curiosity. I also get aked if I'm going to medical school when I've finished my stint as a "just a nurse." I always smile and say that nurses have more interaction with patients, more chance for health prevention education. I work as a tech (cna) on the weekends to gain more experience. Good luck with your career path. If you really want to do this, it will work. :mortarboard:

New nurses in Med/Surg a must?
at my hospital - the MOST travelers are in the medical unit. (the surgical is a separate unit) After the 8 wk stint, they transfer up to CCU or ICU. I work as a float tech - RN student and have experienced each unit (ED, ICU, CCU, PACU, postpartum, Medical, Surgical) except Peds and do NOT want to work in Medical. It seems to be just a glorified SNIF - but my lab partner at school loves it and wants to work there after graduation. I want to work in ICU or CCU when I graduate - and know I can get my capstone in SR2 nursing at a big teaching hospital that will hire me after graduation. I totally agree with Anagray - shadow/work as a float on every floor so you can see what you don't want, before you decide what you do want. good luck!!!

RN with huge medical debt, looking for high paying work
Have you thought of travelling agencies? I am a cna/rn student at a Sutter Health community hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area. Many traveling RNs come here from the South (GA AL VA NC TX) and South West (AZ, NV) I have learned the most valuable of my med surg skills from RN's who have launched their kids and now take traveling gigs for 8 - 12 wks all around the US but love the west coast ( I live in fog & sunshine.) I know that Sutter Mills Penninsula has recruited some of my fellow rn students from my 4 yr private school (tuition $$$) for $80K. Part of this is the benefit package - but the rents are higher here. I know at my hospital - new grad RN's in cardiology/telemetry can earn $42/hr plus benefits. The trick is to sign up for less hours (.7) and put yourself on call and pick up Over time. This can wreck your personal life - but if you want to get rid of debt.... good luck with your job search! I am in a similar boat with 3 small people waiting for me to finish my BSN!

We need a Nursing TV show
what about real nurses writing the scenario? "I need a 22 French stat, my pt needs a cleansing enema" Really, who understands code brown? the exhaustion, the need for caffeine, the need for a lift team, and how much fun it is to cross a picket line when the local union is striking and it's the dieticians, cna's and your friends?
