Night shifters - ever experience this?
I hope you succeed in finding a different floor to transfer to for day shift as I'd feel the same way as you regarding the current situation. A friend told me she used to work night shifts and suddenly her body revolted forcing her to go to day shifts. So it does happen.

2nd Career in Nursing
Echoing some of the sentiments by nycNurse2b and 8packmurse, it was challenging to make the transition & the market conditions are currently tougher! When it will change is unknown. I would recommend working as a Patient Care Assistant or Nurse Tech in a hospital on your days off. This experience will give you great insight into the world of nursing. You can find classes for this at a community college. Then make your decision whether you want to take a financial risk. If you decide to continue, being a nurse tech in a hospital will greatly help your opportunities in getting an Internship as a New Grad at this hospital. But, nursing school is extremely time demanding - is your family prepared for this? Just getting in is also extremely competitive. Talk to one of their counselors too & attend an Info Session to learn more. Best wishes!

Will my age keep me from a good nursing career?
Excellent question. I was in your shoes not too long ago & was surprised at the age discrimination I encountered. I turned one of those around by requesting recommendations on positions I should interview for as a mature new nurse. Because there were no openings at this hospital, I interviewed at a different hospital & got hired in their maternity area. This does not happen to everyone as I know of a nurse who was hired immediately. She believes that in her case, the fact that the interviewer graduated from the same nursing school had a lot to do with her getting hired. Where are the nurse's that are in their 50's? While not necessarily in the majority, I see directors, managers & also staff nurses that age. Persistence is critical for success. But understand, that in the meantime, there are now many new grads & many more coming out of nsg schools who are & will be competing for much fewer internship slots. There are many who remain without internships & I also personally know of some. One of them is asking himself if age has worked against him as he is in his late 40's & he chose nsg as his second career. Also a factor to keep in mind. I wish you success!

Congrats on being in this program! Are you finding it doable while working full time? Is it organized & would you recommend it? How long would you recommend we be settled in our nsg job before attempting this program? I'm considering it. Thanks! :typing

Advice for job change
Maryarn, Sorry to hear about your situation. I have just obtained my RN & will be seeking employment. I have been interested in the OR but am now wondering if I should consider starting out in a different area to get experience & become more flexible. Then, if I'm still interested in the OR, pursue it, knowing I could return to a different area of nsg too. Based on your experience in the OR, what is your recommendation? Thanks!

New Grad-RN Just got hired into OR
Congrats to you all! As a new OR hire, do hospitals train you in both roles - Circulator & Scrub? Training in the Scrub role even though hospitals hire Surg Tech's would prepare me to be a more astute Circulator, per advice I've been given. Or do they only train you to be a Circulator? I'm entering my last yr of nsg school & am drawn to the OR.

Any new OR nurses out there?
Tk you for your advice Pitbullgirl. I'll definitely look at the ED & seel if I can get on as a tech to help me work my way to the OR. Sounds like this s/b a better plan vs going the M/S route to the OR.
