  1. Question replied to JaneyW's topic in Ob/Gyn
No flu shot for me unless something major happens to my immune system. I would quit my job before I would let the government force me to take it. Many people argue that the flu shot can not cause the flu 'which is true' but it can cause your immune systems to be lowered enough to get the flu. Not to mention the preservatives, additives contained within plus it is injected into your blood stream which is not the natural way someone would get the flu.. OTC recommendations? They kill around 16,000 people each year. http://www.mercola.com/2004/feb/7/over_the_counter.htm http://www.newstarget.com/020279.html
  2. ZASHAGALKA, Those stats are from the Journal of the American Medical Association not from my personal belief system library. Of course, I would never say nor did I say that all medicine is unnecessary. I would like to see the articles that you got the statistics from. I would like to read the one about ACE inhibitors. PS. Is science subjective or objective? Is it repeatable or non-repeatable? Now look at what I said about TT and it being in a grad program. Thanks for the disucussion!
  3. My point was to answer a question you posed. "Western medicine is the number one killer? Right" Although, I do not know if it is the number one killer, it is at least in the top three. Of course, I would not argue about diet and exercise being a problem but drugs are huge negative factor also. I do love science and have spent the last 9 years of my life studying it. We do not know exactly what each drug does, what effects it will have on someone, if it will create more disease, if it is creating highly resistant viruses and bacteria, if it is damaging human protein, or all the effects that is could have on DNA. That is not evidence; most medicine in my opinion is the best guess model. The requirement are getting lower and lower. I need to find the article in Jama but if I am not mistaken a drug that shows 1% better than a placebo can be marketed even though the drug has the potential to create toxic effects in people and their environment and possible kill them. Like you said, many people could live a healthier life by eating more fresh fruits and vegetables and exercising and in my opinion staying away from all drugs including OTCs unless absolutely necessary. Sorry, I got off topic a little but I guess it is relevant. Some medical death stats per year: 12,000 -- unnecessary surgery 7,000 -- medication errors in hospitals 20,000 -- other errors in hospitals 80,000 -- infections in hospitals 106,000 -- non-error, negative effects of drugs These total to 225,000 deaths per year from iatrogenic causes!! Does TT belong in a Grad program? If they can teach it in a manner that is objective and not simply subjective that can show repeatable results and high interpractitioner reliability, yes. If it has been proven wrong by repeated, independent, unbiased, proper research then, no.

Many chiropractors are also trained in crianiosacral therapy. Chiropractors also have many other light force 'gentle' techniques like, atlas orthogonal (AO), N.U.C.C.A, activator methods, Grostic etc. http://www.upcspine.com/default.asp http://www.atlasorthogonality.com/ http://www.orthospinology.org/index.html http://www.activator.com/ http://www.aucco.org/grostic.html
  5. I believe that thinking is not high on some people's lists. I for one love to think and engage in philosophy. I do not need someone to tell me how to think or what to do. I study, read and discuss topics with doctors and philosophers almost daily. I am surrounded by a large diverse group of health care professionals. I agree that there needs to be a level of safety in herbs, vitamins, and minerals etc. That is why I go with organic products that the companies have allowed their products to be independently tested for consistent quality and safety. If you go on http://www.mercola.com and look what he reports you find that he reports the good and bad about vitamins, herbs, and minerals etc. I find his site very helpful and you can research what he has to say even further before making a health choice. Like I said before, I do not agree with everything he says but then again I have never met a person that I always agree with. About ephedra, I could not find one place that mercola supported it. He did say that there was evidence that it could be linked to many negative health conditions. The only other thing I found was that it was banned from unpatentable products but not from patented products like Sudafed and OTC cold medicine. Look up the research on OTC cold medicine and see for yourself how there is pretty much no supporting evidence. I heard that a recent BMJ journal article siad said if a toxic drug has a 1% higher success rate than placebo that they have good chance to get it passed by the FDA. Just a 1% better success than a water pill, lol. Is that Scientific? I want read the book Overdosed America : The Broken Promise of American Medicine http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BHA3MC/sr=8-1/qid=1144453904/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6424522-8591167?%5Fencoding=UTF8 That guy barret that runs quack watch is laughable. He credentials are pretty much non-existent.
  6. I just have to say that chiropractic has helped me tremendously. Back pain, neck pain, hip pain, allergies etc. It has also helped me have a better attitude becuase when you are in a lot pain it is hard to be happy all the time, although not impossible. Many chiropractors have pre-med degress and another 4 years of training. There are many techniques from non-force adjusting to high force adjusting and you can chose which one to go too. I like having options to chose from! http://WWW.chiroweb.com is a good website. Pubmed has chiropractic articles also. You could also search Dysafferentation. It takes a little time to find one that you like because they will have their hands on you to make an adjustment,so you will have to have that level of trust there. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=16423302&query_hl=7&itool=pubmed_docsum
  7. Thanks for the replys!
  8. Hello, I was considering joining the National Guard as a 91D. Basic training would start in Jan for 9 weeks and then 19 weeks for IT. What are the chances of being called to Iraq? I just want an idea that comes from someone other than recruiter. All they say is there is a chance. I know there is a chance and if I am going to do this, I would like to know what those chances are so I can discuss it with my family. Also, give some opinions of what you think about this option. Thanks!
  9. I like Gesundheit by Patch Adams. M.D. It is about health care in general. Good book! You can also check out the website http://www.patchadams.org.
  10. Do you sugest a dimensional analysis book for meds or a general dimensional analysis book?
  11. Question replied to futureTMA's topic in Ob/Gyn
You can watch it on fox news video. They interviewed the young man that found them. Just go to fox news dot com and click on video and then click on O'REILLY FACTOR. It is a pretty good video clip, that woman was nuts!
  12. Are they both nationally accredited? I would definitely check that out to help make your decision. I would also compare the cost of tuition and living expenses between the two. The retention rate could also be due to how well they like the instructors and not necessarily the toughness of the program. I just wanted to give you some things to consider.
  13. What are some good nursing books that you suggest a male nurse read?
  14. Maybe you all have not experienced hazing but putting unnecessary stress on someone, assigning difficult tasks just to watch them suffer through it and degrading someone in front of people and patients, is what I understand to be considered hazing. "Hazing" refers to any activity expected of someone joining a group (or to maintain full status in a group) that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person's willingness to participate. The euphemism in nursing is "eating their young". Well, if have or have not been involved in hazing the article below is a good one to read. I would also suggest that all nurses, students, and pre-nursing students get involved in nursing associations and get involved on a national level to help stop this behavior. Bring awareness to the profession and if they do not want to change it, then bring awareness outside the profession. http://nursing.advanceweb.com/common/editorial/editorial.aspx?CC=17342 Again, THANK YOU to the ones that do not show or condone this type of behavior, which I assume most do not.
  15. I think in any other profession or organization they would call what you described above as HAZING and it is illegal. In my humble opinion it needs to be stopped and I hope senior nurses are willing to stand up to the task. Students and new nurses should try joining a nurse association and put hazing on the top priority to put a stop too. Power comes in numbers but it only takes one to lead the crowd. To answer the question above: Yeah, some people will probably be happier in another profession where their peers do not haze them. I think hazing pushes a lot of qualified nurses out of the profession. I know all nurses do not haze the new comers and I can honestly say THANK YOU for being humble, loving people. "Hazing" refers to any activity expected of someone joining a group (or to gain status within the group) that humiliates, degrades or risks emotional and/or physical harm, regardless of the person's willingness to participate." All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing." - Edmund Burke
  16. I visit http://www.mercola.com a couple time per week and he sends out weekly updates which are pretty good. He is a M.D. and has a lot of information on his site. Although, I do not agree with everything he says I do find it very helpful. Check it out!
  17. So, I guess that if you think you can make it until the next day just wait and see your family doc, right ? I mean someone that is not going to the er to get unnessecary meds or trying to screw the system but someone who is wanting quality care.
  18. I have watched the same thing happen with family members. I am not a nurse yet but I have not had any vaccine in the last 20 years and I will never take the flu shot unless I absolutely have too. I rarely get sick but I eat healty, exercise, and do not keep myself locked indoors. I know that I will have to be updated on tetorifice before clinicals because I have never had one before. We had the option not to take the Hep B and I opted out. I think the vaccine issue is very a touchy with so much bias on both sides of the issue. When I go to get updates I will make sure that I ask for ones that are preservative free especially Thimersol, which contains 49.5% ethyl mercury, a known neurotoxin. It is sad that it took people standing up aganist the mercury for the companies to remove a dangerous component. Of course the above statement is strictly my opinion.
  19. Why is sex ed even a problem if parents give permission, their must be schools that do not get permission or it would not be an issue, right? I'm just wondering..
  20. It should be mandatory that they get parental permission. If ‘like some say’ that some do not get at home because they do not have caring parents then those parents will not care to let their kids take the course. The main problem I have is that today is that their is a push from certain groups not to just teach about disease and prevention but to teach that having sex with multiple partners is ok and that is just fine to homosexual relations and I for one refuse to have my kids taught that. There is a body of evidence out their in multiple studies that show that parents and religion have a large influence in young adults. Some even suggest that it is the largest influence over these young adults. So when a parent and their religion give reasons of why is not a good choice and it is presented in an understandable manner, young adults may listen to that more than any other influences. That does not mean that kids should not know about disease prevention but when you have the ACLU in schools trying taking away a kids right to bless his food and want to teach elementary students that Bob and Joe can be a couple and that it is ok for Jane and Sue to marry. Which is another subject, but some schools try to slide it in during their sex ed. I do not have a problem with sex ed as long as they have parental permisssion and that the parents are aware of what they are teaching, which I assume most schools due.
  21. I never used them for night shift but I did use them when I was working and sharing a hotel with a friend that snored like crazy. I used really soft orange ones that were really comfortable. I would have never had any sound sleep if it was not for them. Never had a problem hearing the alarm clock either but I am really senesitive to the alarm when I have to be up.
  22. Hello, I was wondering if it is common practice for doctors to over utilize test when people come to the ER? My friend works in the ER and he said that the doctors would order whatever they can to charge the patient and only the older nurses or x-ray tech will question him. My friend is new and is afraid to get fired but said that it is a common practice there. I was wondering if this is a universal problem or just a few places. From my own experiences it seems that they are very eager to do a lot of expensive and more invasive tests. I know a lot of people go because they are scared and want to know what is wrong with them and if is not serious some would be happy to be sent home and told to go to their family doc. At least the people I know would. The reason I am asking is because ER interests me but I do not want to be in an area that puts people through unnecessary testing.
  23. I start the ADN program in Jan and I was wondering if it would worth becoming a CNA once I have already started the program or just not worry about it?
  24. Here is a great link to an article published by the British Medical Journal in June 2005 about home births. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/330/7505/1416
