Nursing school: Bizarre practice in learning to bed bath..
I graduated 2 years ago, so I guess it was about 5 years ago we practiced bed bathes. We were told to wear a bathing suit or shorts/shirt to get wet. We had a same sex partner and our fake hospital drapes were closed (that was part of the learning as well, pt privacy). I am heavy set, I have body issues, this was no big deal... Definitely a good learning experience, nothing to get weirded out by or jealous over. Now if they said I had to practice catheters on a classmate I would have said no way, but that's alot more invasive... We had to practice injections and IVs on eachother too, it all goes along with learning to be a nurse, and we always have a choice to participate or not, but you can't expect to practice on someone else if you aren't willing to be a guinea pig for others..

Your job, LOVE it or HATE it? What field of nursing are you in?
Here are my answers 1. Do you love, like or hate your job? LIKE 2. What field of nursing are you in? HOSPITAL-LABOR AND DELIVERY 2 YEARS 3. Are you FT, PT, PD? FULL TIME (3 12'S WEEKLY) 4. Do you look forward to going to work or dread it? SOME DAYS I LOOK FORWARD TO IT, IF I'M SCHEDULED WITH A GOOD/POSITIVE/FUN/SUPPORTIVE GROUP OF COWORKERS... OTHER TIMES I DREAD IT-LIKE ON WEEKENDS WHEN MY FAMILY IS HOME AND I HAVE TO GO TO WORK FOR 12 HOURS 5. What gives you the most job satisfaction? DEALING WITH APPRECIATIVE PATIENTS, BEING PART OF A DELIVERY FOR FIRST TIME PARENTS WHO ARE EXCITED TO BECOME PARENTS OR A FIRST TIME GRANDMA AND DAD IS CRYING OR GRANDMA IS CRYING AND THE PATIENT SAYS THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP, BEING COMPLIMENTED BY A COWORKER, SEEING A LOOK OF RELIEF OR THANKS IN A COWORKERS EYES WHEN I HELP THEM WITHOUT THEM ASKING OR EXPECTING HELP 6. On a scale of 0-10 (0 being least stressful, 10 being most stressful) how stressed does your job make you? SOME DAYS WHEN IT'S CRAZY/CHAOTIC BUSY AND ALL THE POOP IS HITTING THE FAN AT ONCE--10. ON DAYS WHEN THERE ARE BARELY ANY PATIENTS AND A FUN GROUP OF COWORKERS, AND EVERYTHING IS GOING NORMALLY AND SMOOTHLY--0 7. What causes you the most job stress? WHEN I'VE BEEN WORKING MY BUTT OFF AND A DOC COMES IN JUST TO BE RUDE OR UNAPPRECIATIVE, DRUG MOM'S IN PRETERM LABOR BECAUSE THEY'VE BEEN DOPED UP ALL NIGHT AND THEY'RE SCREAMING AT YOU TO MAKE THEY'RE PAIN STOP AND NOT COOPERATIVE AND DELIVER THEIR 29 WEEK BABY AND THINK THEY'VE DONE A GOOD JOB, FETAL DEMISES 8. What do you think could make your job better, so you get the most joy and satisfaction out of your work day? BETTER TEAM WORK, LESS GOSSIP, MORE POSITIVITY FROM MY COWORKERS (NO MORE FETAL DEMISES OR DRUG MOM'S)

A totally different career path please
Definitely try other areas of nursing before you decide you hate nursing. If you don't like floor nursing you can always try a Dr office as others have mentioned, home health, public health like another previous poster said or psych nursing. I rather enjoyed my psych rotation in nursing school (and everyone loved their home health clinical rotation). Psych was less medical and more, well psych ) Otherwise you can try a class for nurse informatics (it's like computer system operations and training or something like that), or maybe get a masters to do physical therapy... NP, PA, CRNA... So many options with a BSN degree... Good luck and let us know what you try next!

How did you get your job?
I had to move 5 hours away. I had a friend interviewing for a position and they asked her if she had any friends also looking for a job. So I went to interview as well and they offered both of us positions. This was in Santa Maria, CA. (Marian Medical Center-CHW facility). I don't know how they had the positions listed on their website (new grad RN??) because I never looked (I wasn't actually planning on moving). But I believe it just looked like a regular staff nurse position that my friend applied for. SO you probably have to be willing to move... I believe CHW may have some new grad openings in Bakersfield that they find hard to fill because of the location?? just what I noticed in the last year... Anyway, good luck!!

IUPC scope of practice
I've worked in 2 hospitals in California. At one hospital RNs could insert IUPC's (smaller community hospital - 300 births monthly). In the hospital I'm currently at, the MDs do it.
-
What is appropriate nurse to patient ratio in stage 2 of labor?
It can't be done accurately or safely... AWHONN states 1:1 ratio....period... letting your pt push on her own while you go eval another pt??? ugh, your nurse manager is nuts to even imply that is safe... You are right my dear... 1:1...
-
IV push hydralazine or labetalol - tele?
yes, tele, to both. They just made that change recently at our hospital. They don't have a tele monitor in PP and the RNs aren't required to have an EKG class... And Tele doesn't take Mag patients, so our facility is trying to figure out what to do with pt's that may need IV hydralazine or labetalol who are also on mag. As of now our only option is to send them to ICU/CCU (or back to L&D which can not always be done due to census)...

Well-worn debate. Men in OB
Had a male lvn in l& d at my last job, no big deal. Heard they had a male l&d rn there to. Again, it's not a big deal. Perfectly acceptable. Pt's are used to seeing men in the room because, as most of the other posters mentioned, many of the docs are male. As long as you get the job done it doesn't matter if you're a man or woman right. If L&D is where you want to be, well go for it! I bet you'd be surprised how well received you'll be by 98% of people out there :0) Good luck!

IV push hydralazine or labetalol - tele?
As of recently, yes

I Have a Bad Feeling About This Student - Am I Over-reacting?
Did you go to Guidance? To see what they would do... do they just talk to the boy or would they get the police or whomever involved to keep the boy safe and mentally evaluated. If they'll just "talk" to him then you should probably get some authority figures involved. You may want to let the principal know that if she doesn't do something that you'll be calling the school board and police on behalf of the boy yourself. Anyway, I read your update, keep us posted of how the situation progresses because we're all thinking about you and the boy. I'm praying for you both.
-
I Have a Bad Feeling About This Student - Am I Over-reacting?
You mentioned another eighth grader committed suicide not long ago. I wonder if bullying were an issue for that student. And I wonder if this current student knew that child, maybe he needs some grief counseling? Seems like your school should be extra sensitive to sad/bullied children so they don't have another suicide on their hands. That poor kid. I'm glad you're back there tomorrow to light a fire under these school administrators and get this child protected and mentally evaluated. You've done great so far. I prayed for you and the boy. Let us know what happens.
-
I Have a Bad Feeling About This Student - Am I Over-reacting?
All you can do is try. God put you there that day for a reason, you may have saved that kids life that day. Go to the counsler and find out what you can do. If they can't give you an answer that will protect that child then move on to the next administrator. If nobody will listen, call the police and file a report. Pray. The counsler should set something up so the boy's mental health is evaluated, but at the least your school should have a no-tolerance policy for bullying and the bully should be expelled fromthat school. And you are a mandatory reporter so if nobody else will listen then you should take it to the authorities since you aren't at that school on a daily basis. Just my opinion. And I really do think God put you there those 2 days specifically for this boy. Good job. Trust your gut and pray. Good luck and keep us posted.
