  1. I graduated in May 09 with my BSN. I can honestly say that for me, nursing was the WORST career choice I could have ever made. I had family members try to talk me out of even going to nursing school, but I didn't listen, so here I am- jobless and miserbale. I worked one month and 2 weeks on a med-surg floor and then I quit. I can't handle nursing. I literally cried my self to sleep at nite, woke up crying the next morning, and squalled all the way to work on my hour long drive & all the way back home. I made myself so sick that I couldn't eat. It was horrible. I wish I wouldn't have stayed in nursing school, but I did b/c I thought I could maybe work in a dr's office.I love working with geriatric patients, and so I'd thought about going into speech therapy. But now I'm not so sure. I've also looked into medical coding. My cousin does that and I like it because its a lot of repetition. If you already have your BSN- what else is available to you that doesn't require actual in-hospital pt care? I've also thought about medical transcription - just wondering if anyone knows how hard it would be for someone like me to get a job in those areas? Or if anyone else has any other job ideas that I could do with the degree I already have?
  2. Thank you all so much for your replies. I can honestly say this was the worst interview I've ever experienced in my whole life. Not one health care related question, no situational "what would you do" type questions- which is what I was prepared for lol. I guess it's a blessing in disguise that it went as horribly as it did- as said someone said earlier- more experience would help!! I just cant believe those questions! In all the interviews I've ever been to, I've NEVER had questions like that. here's some of what I can remember! 1. Describe a time that you were part of a team working to achieve a goal. Describe your role and how you as a team worked to achiever the ultimate goal. 2. Describe a system you came up with at work to help you achieve your ultimate daily goals. (what the heck??) i just can't believe there were no health care related questions!!! how crazy is that??? i was so dumbfounded. i felt like i was interviewing for a true business job that would require no health care experience whatsoever
  3. thank you! i really hope i can land this job! oh and does anyone have a good objective for my resume? in nsg school they always told us to put "to obtain a position in the field of nursing" but I feel that it's so ... bland. I thought about putting "to obtain a challenging position as a school nurse" but i guess maybe thats not that spicy either! any ideas?
  4. Hello all! I have been reading some previous posts, and am now a little nervous about the upcoming interview for a school nurse position where I live. I graduated in May, and decided to take a break after graduation. so I've only had 3 months total of nursing experience. 2 months of ICU & 1 month on a post-surgical/ pediatric floor. I've been caring for an elderly woman with alzheimer's while I've not been working in the hospital. I read that you should be an experienced nurse prior to entering the field of school nursing. I loved school nursing when I did my community health clinicals. I loved doing all the vision and hearing screenings, and I love paperwork! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have this job, being in the school made nursing fun for me! It's so different from hospital nursing, and I loathed being in the hospital. I like more of a community health type setting, but of course I can't say "well you know I didn't really didn't like working in the hospital and thats why I'm here." I'm ovbiously NOT experienced and I'm just wondering how I'm going to "sell myself" to this panel of interviewers! Anyone have any advice? I know they will ask "why are you the best candidate for this job" and i'm sure i'm probably not if you look at experience. I'm beginning to feak out lol
  5. Ok.. I hadn't been able to find an RN job in my area as a new grad and now suddenly in the past week I've been given 3 interviews at 3 dfferent places- hospital, health dept, and mental health facility. The job I would LOOOOVE to land is at the health department. The RN job opening there requires no previous experience which is such a plus for me b/c the only experience I have is an externship in the ICU that last 2 months!! Anyway... can someone describe for me the day in the life of an RN who works at a health department??? I am from a town of like 4,000 people so I know pretty much what goes on there. I know they do a lot of vaccinations and such. But what about the health department in a bigger city of say 50,000 people (just to give you an idea). I'm thinking it would have to be a lot different than the health department I am used to. So can someone paint me a picture please? Is the health department stressful--- as stressful as the hospital?? They have in their job decription that your duties include case mgmt of communicable disease-- I'd just like some info!!!!! THANKS A BUNCH!!
  6. I took a job on a surgical/pediatric floor last week only b/c it was the only job offer I've had since May. I don't deal very well with super high levels of stress. In fact I hate the hospital, always have. I wanted to work in a nursing home or health dept or dr's office.. although reasing some recent posts about SNF's has totally changed my mind about that. Anyway, I know some people who work on this floor, and they hate it and also tell me that everyone else hates it too b/c it has such a high stress level & constant pt turnover. So now I'm thinking this is just great!! I know I don't have a choice here... we need the money, BUT my main concern is the fact that I haven't done ANYTHING related to nursing in almost 7 months. I hated it so much and was so dead set on going back to school to do somehting else...which I did for a semester then had to quit b/c we couldn't afford it anymore...I sort of just threw all the nursing stuff out of my head b/c I thought I would NEVER use it again. And now here I am taking a nursing job. I'm freaking out.... I defintely didn't retain anything from peds b/c I HATED IT IN SCHOOL. its not that i don't love kids... its just that they make me super nervous.. they're soo small andi don't know it just freaks me out. I have to do this don't I? I could be a substitute teacher and make like 50-80 dollars a day, but my husband says no & that I should just try this job. Any thoughts on what to do or what to preapre myself for?
  7. Yeah i'm in the process of applying.. tyring to perfect my application. Who's have thought we wouldn't be able to find jobs as nurses!!! It's insane! I'm gonna hold out a little bit longer, but if i don't have something in a few weeks, I'm going to take whatever job I can get- receptionist or cleaning houses... whatever I can find. How sad is that?
  8. After reading several posts... I now realize I am not alone in my search for a job. I too graduated from a well known nursing school... and yet I cannot find a job.. Every job opening wants like 2-3 years of experience. Yet I have continued to fill out application after application. It's getting depressing and very frustrating. Anyway I'm just wondering, for those new grads who did actually land a job, how did you "sell yourself" in your resume/ application??? The only experience I have is when I did an externship in the ICU at a local hospital. So when it comes to listing my SKILLS on an application... I draw a total blank... I feel like I don't really have any. I REALLY need a job and I actually found some openings for new grads NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED here in AL even if it is 1 1/2 to 2 hours away from my house!!!!! I need some help here with the skills part... I mean I am good with kids, LOVE geriatric patients, decent at starting IV's... but I don't really feel like these are SKILLS... what do they want to hear??
