New to Rehab Nursing
Thanks for starting this thread!! And thanks to everyone for all the great advice!! I recently started days in a free standing acute rehab facility and absolutely LOVE it so far! I graduated in May '13 and spent my first 8 months doing nights on a med/surg unit. That was so insanely stressful, but I gained tons of invaluable experience! This new job has been a breath of fresh air, regardless of how busy it can get! I wanted to post a comment I left on another thread, in case anyone had some ideas to share ~ All of the advice given so far has been wonderful and so much appreciated!! Thanks again and also, in advance, to future posters

New Grad Rehab Nurse
Thanks for starting this thread!! And thanks for all the great advice!! I would also love to hear how y'all organize your day. I work days and have been trying to put a brain together myself. We have 2 different computer programs: 1 for meds, orders, labs, records, etc and 1 specifically for assessments. We also update kardexes throughout the day, make a copy of each and then write up our reports for shift change on the back. So, there's already alot to keep up with! I've been experimenting with a task sheet with room to write down changes, new orders, etc. Just feels like there's still so much to keep up with. Also, if anyone has any tips or pointers for CBE, I would love you forever!! I was told day shift always needs to do a full assessment and address everything, regardless if there weren't any changes. Time management has been a big focus for me, as I'm sure it is for most nurses (esp new ones). Thanks so much for all the advice!!

Tired but would like to work
Have you had your Vit. D level checked? May be a key factor for why you're so tired and also the insomnia. I got diagnosed with narcolepsy in May and have had some relief with meds, but not much. About 2 months ago, I started seeing a neurologist and she's helped me get my B's and D levels up (which were super scary low!) been feeling so much better since, even though my D level is still below normal, but I've been able to cut back almost 1/2 of what I was talking to help me stay awake! Been sleeping solid too!!

Nurse mates shoes, any good opinions
I got these shoes about a month ago and haven't even thought about my feet!!! Except when someone compliments the shoes, lol! I'm in LOVE with how comfy, cute and supportive they are! There are 2 downsides though: 1) The sizing is way off and runs like 2 sizes too small (I wear 8-1/2 to 9 or 39-40 EUS, and ordered a 41 EUS). They fit well but are a little loose, so idk if a 40 would be perfect or too small. I've been completely happy with the 41, with that being said ? 2) They aren't very slip-resistant. Here's a link to the pair I got: http://www.allheart.com/m/spring-step-womens-firefly-leather-slip-on-shoe/p/spfirefly/ I'm not certain if what all I mentioned above applies to the other styles, so keep that in mind. It's been so refreshing to finally find a supportive shoe, so I can focus on my patients instead of my back, knee and foot pain!

allnurses Ebola Preparedness Survey Makes the News.
Thank you herring_RN for those links! Being a nurse here in Texas is hard and it's a shame that there are no unions in our state. As a new nurse (almost at my 2nd year), I've learned real fast what can happen if you speak your mind or stand up for what is morally right versus what is best for business and patient satisfaction. I feel it cost me my first job deep down. So sad, but so inspiring for me at the same time ~ just not sure where to start. Right now, I'm just keeping my head down, my mouth shut and do my job well with compassion. I'm still blown away that we haven't received even an email addressing anything whatsoever (except reminders to ask about travel with admissions...) ~ and I live 80 miles from Dallas! There is a lot of focus on First Responders and how they're prepared though... but still... unbelievable! I'm so glad I've been doing a ton of research and educating myself as much as possible ~ it's more of the general population here that concerns me if anything...

Here's How the CDC Director Protects Himself from Ebola (But Not Nurses)
- "Houston we have a problem" This just got very real
So, I just read that they've been using chlorine for disinfecting... Not sure how I didn't know that already, but good to know now, ha! Operation Blessing International One of the top needs in the Ebola response? Chlorine. The non-profit sent five chlorine generators to Liberia for hand washing and to disinfect surfaces, producing about 440 gallons of chlorine a day, said Bill Horan, president of Operation Blessing. "Soap and water is better than nothing, but chlorine and water is what will kill the virus and stop the spread of Ebola," Horan said. Operation Blessing staff and volunteers are distributing chlorine to the Liberian government and directly to residents, he said. The non-profit is shipping another generator later this month, this one with the capability of producing 640 gallons of chlorine a day, Horan said.
