  1. Hello, I'll be in school getting my MPH this Summer. I have worked in a public health for the last 6 years. I'm looking to work with large government public health entities. I'm really excited for this degree! Honestly, you don't need your NP degree, just have the clinical experience as an RN in public health -that is more than enough. PM if you need anymore information.
  2. Have you tried finding employment first in research?
  3. I know this is an old post but did you get your certificate in global health?
  4. I am curious if any nurses were mobilized in the U.S. during the pandemic, especially those with Reserve status like myself. Many individuals from my unit were activated and awaiting/in process of moving to locations where the crisis is the worst. Please keep safe and blessed, 2020 is indeed the year of the Nurse.
  5. Does anyone know how long it takes to hear back? I will move to Houston area in April.. I already have the license. I applied to a NP position in December my application currently says " Under Department Review".
  6. This year I had to really think hard about my longterm career as a NP. Its been 4 years for me and my current job had me rethinking that it was a waste of a degree. (Im actively looking for new employment.) I decided to do some "deep" soul searching of defining that kinda of career that would make me happy in the long-run. I went back to my 1st love of Public Health. I've decided what I needed is a role that was dynamic and diverse. For me this inlcuded leadership, research, public/global health and teaching. Most of my current experience is currently in PH..which helps out! Im looking to going back to school for a MPH and applying to public health position in the long-run after I obtain my MPH. (WHO, NIH, CDC, HHS etc). And somehow I will manage to still see patients on the side as well. Im encouraging you to look into alterntative career path with your advances degrees!
  7. Hey Togu, I was thinking of becoming MSL because of my specialty I see alot of MSL positions for NPs in oncology, neurology and ID. I actually did a few interviews and starting pay based on my education/experience would be between 110k-115k w/ additional bonuses and yearly increases. It seemed like a great opportunity (travel, flexible scheduled, meeting w/ stakeholders/providers, educating clinicians on the latest meds/studies etc.) since the conventional NP route has been burning me out. I'll probably re-visit when I'm older ?
  8. I agree this why I want to transition to a non-direct patient care role. Burnout is real on my end!
  9. I got mine..I plan to work at Health and Human Services and dabble into research.
  10. Thanks to everyone who answered. I already know at two other jobs I would straight off the back would make 107-112k. I actually turned them down b/c.. people kept telling me "how great the VA was/is". I am not worried about health insurance (Reserves). I had a setback due to several family emergencies and I had to help out financially. Also, the PA that they hired makes ~110k and we have the same years of experience. Plus, I have the certification for my specialty. I've decided I am not staying long-term and when I have more stability in my finance I will be leaving. I do love locums and traveling.. I feel the VA is a job for someone who is more "settled" than I am. I love the Vets though!
  11. I would like some advice. I have been a NP for 3.5 years now and RN since 2011. I received a job offer from he VA at less than <95-100k annual. Non-negotiable. I am currently, working the job and I'm honestly not happy about the hoops to go through to increase to the next grade. And my salary took a hit because I mainly was employed via locums. I am under 35 years of age, single with no child. I have so much financial responsibilities/debt. It's to the point where I may have to find a 2nd job, which is frustrating me. Can anyone tell me if the VA is worth it long-term. I mean I have my own IRA and personal savings. What I make in 2 weeks I made in 1 week doing locums. Everyone keeps telling me its great long-term, but I really need the "NOW". Any advise would help.
  12. I think it's in your best interest to contact a medical recruiter from the branches... criteria always changes each year.
  13. I agree. I always suggest for new NPs to gravitate towards Specialty practice, such as Cardiology, Endocrinology, GI, ID,occupational health etc. Starting salary is much more satisfactory than Primary Care.
  14. Just to update my post.. I've done my physical, fingerprints..did equip/vetpro. I am doing my NP privilege form and references check will be sent out next week. This has been the longest the pre-employment process of my life. Going on 9 months. I'm hoping to start in December.
