Virtual Clinical Excursions
My school used the pediatric virtual excursion and we really liked it. Except for the fact that everything has to be done in real time, I thought it was a pretty cool program.

Sometimes it isnt good to be a health professional
I worked for a periodontist for several years and we did scaling and root planing daily. We usually gave Novocaine for the procedure and ibuprofen afterward. We told our patients that they might have some discomfort afterward and to just take the ibuprofen and rinse with warm salt water, and we never had anyone come back and tell us they had pain. The other periodontist in the practice told his patients that there would be pain and swelling afterward and always prescribed pain killers. Guess what? His patients almost always experienced pain following the procedure. I think a lot of times people will experience what they're told to expect. You shouldn't expect anything more than some soreness afterward......warm salt water works wonders!!

made a big mistake in clinical.... now what?
Not to sound unsympathetic but, as I see it, there are 6 pages of posts responding to your questions...all good advice. Maybe part of the communications problem is that you only want to hear what you want to hear. There is no magical way to fix this, and I would stop asking the instructor if you're going to fail. She told you no and if you continue to badger her she may just start wondering if you know something she doesn't (but should!) I hope things work out for you!

LVN to RN???

Um, more than I wanted to know...
I'm doing my OB rotation now and I was telling my mother about a circumcision I witnessed. She proceded to tell me that my father wasn't circumcised until he was in his 30's! LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA

Sounds like my schedule, except that I'm up at 4:30 for my 6:00 clinicals.

GMU vs NOVA vs Marymount
Yes, admission is competitive. They said this year they had more well qualified people than last year and they had to turn a lot away. There were close to 400 applications for 130 spots. I was a CMA in my last life....good luck to you!

GMU vs NOVA vs Marymount
I'm not sure I'd say NOVA is "better" (I took my pre-reqs there). It just depends on what you're looking for degree-wise. Both programs prepare you to take the NCLEX...the passing of which will get you the title of RN. Both programs have a great reputation; but if you think you want to go to NOVA, better get yourself on the waiting list now! Last time I heard there was at least a 1 year wait. That was one reason I decided to go to GMU....and I'm very glad I did!

Virginia Student Nurses?
I'm in the BSN program at GMU. It only takes 4 years (if you start from scratch) of full-time classes to get your degree, but you don't start nursing courses until your junior year (you have to make a separate application to the nursing school for junior status.) The program is tough and they don't recommend that you try to hold down a job while you're doing it (if that's at all possible.) I have a part-time job and I can tell you that even that is difficult sometimes. I'm curious about why you're going for medical assisting if you're also going for the BSN? :)

Weeding out of nursing students
I just discovered this website: http://www.ratemyprofessors.com You can find your school and check out what students have to say about the professors. I checked out some former teachers and the comments were pretty accurate from my viewpoint. Mind you, the whiners, complainers, and malcontents will bring down the overall average, so take it all with a grain of salt, but you might find it interesting reading. I know that a lot of times you don't have a choice when it comes to a professor, but perhaps knowing what you might be in for can help you prepare (or steel) yourself for the experience. :)
