  1. Does your facility teach new grad RN's to scrub?

At my hospital they train all the new OR nurses to scrub and circulate. We have few scrub techs, but in my department, for instance, I think there are are only five scrubs and about twenty five nurses. I'd be happy to PM you the name of the hospital...
  2. I'm about 3.5 months into my orientation, so I can describe my experiences a bit. We started with three weeks of intensive classes on all the basics of the OR (sterile technique, equipment, supplies, etc.). I was hired on to the neuro team, so the ne...
  3. The OR is heaven on earth

If you'd like to know something about the path to becoming a surgeon, there are some good books about that. I recommend Hot Lights, Cold Steel, by Michael J Collins (which is also the most entertaining book I've read by a doctor), or When The Air Hit...
  4. NCLEX practice question help

Just because it appeared in some NCLEX prep material doesn't automatically make it correct. I would just leave it alone and move on.
  5. RT says her scope is wider than mine. Ok?

Obviously there's one one appropriate response to this. Every time you see her, compliment her loudly on how WIDE her scope is. "Dang girl, you're scope is looking mighty wide today." "I have to confess, I've always liked to girl with a wide scope." ...
  6. OR RN Schedule

Rose_Queen, Well, I did get into this with the hope of making some money with overtime pay. I think medical resident hours would be a bit excessive though. At least for me. I like to sleep sometimes.
  7. OR RN Schedule

I think they said $3 for on call time. It isn't much, but there are lots of jobs out there that don't pay anything for being on call, so I just think of it as a bonus.
  8. OR RN Schedule

You what??!!!?? I'm starting my OR job in February, and I've been idly wondering about call schedule, but honestly I don't care that much. I know I won't be taking call until I at least finish initial training, plus I'm looking forward to the extra m...
  9. Is it realistic to work full time and attend ADN school?

I'm finishing up an evening nursing program. Nearly everyone in my class works full time. Just to let you know we started with 29 and we'll probably end with 12, so lots of people didn't make it. But it can be done.
  10. Careers

You might want to consider dialysis nursing. Sounds to me like it would fit the bill pretty well. Plenty of work out there.
  11. Will volunteering help with finding a job as new grad?

I have to disagree with some of those who say this wouldn't help. I went through nursing school (graduate in two weeks) without having a medical related job, so I really wanted to get something on my resume from the hospital other than just my clinic...
  12. Cone Health 2017 New Grad RN Residency 2017

Hiya, I can only answer some of your questions, but hopefully enough to help a bit. Cone Health is a hospital system. If you are accepted in one of the new grad academies (as they spell it out on the site), you could end up with a job placement at a...
  13. New grad RN - UNC Rex or Duke?!

I don't have any personal experience with Rex, though I've heard good things. But I'll be starting at Duke in February. You'd be welcome to be my friend I'm sure I'm a lot older than you, but if you decide to go with Duke and live in or around Durha...
  14. Relocating to NC

I'm a not quite yet new grad in NC. I can tell you a little about an offer I got. As a CNI I would get a base pay just over $23. Night diff is $5.50, weekend is $9, and weekend evening is $14.50. They also offer a relocation grant for moving out of ...
  15. New Grad Looking to get into the OR

Just putting it out there that I'm in this same boat: graduating in December and hoping to find an OR residency program. If any happens to know that their hospital has an OR residency, AND that they accept ADN grads, feel free to send me a PM. I may ...
  16. I'm a new grad / OR nurse!

I'm jealous! I'm graduating in December and REALLY hope to find a job in OR. I keep reading about how OR's have trouble finding new people since students aren't given much exposure during school, so I'm hoping that works in my favor.
  17. Asking nurse coworker out on a date on another floor

Why would you want to go on a date on another floor? Doesn't sound very romantic.
  18. Looking for info for research project

I'm a current nursing student who has an assignment to research standards of care for inpatient hemodialysis, particularly pre-dialysis protocols (i.e., what floor nurses should be doing or not doing before sending patients to dialysis). This is a gr...
  19. When the Hospital Fires the Bullet

I hadn't seen anything here about this story, so I figured maybe people weren't aware of it yet. The short version is that a delusional patient was shot by two off duty police officers working as security in a Houston hospital. The whole thing is pre...
  20. Start my nursing program tomorrow night

Good luck to you. I'm also a night student. There don't seem to be too many of us around here. Just be sure to really stay on top of everything. At my school students fail out all the time. If you need more specific advice, feel free to ask me or oth...
  21. College books are the biggest scams ever

Maybe this is just my own pet peeve, but I really don't understand why people feel the need to print out power points. You can read them without printing them. Also, they tend to have fairly minimal amounts of information per page. If you really want...
  22. Nursing Student Peers Who Want to Mooch

How's this for a suggestion: "Our study group has an agreement. We split up the subject areas to create our own study guides, then share them with each other. That way we all feel fair about our contributions. If you'd like to join our group next sem...
  23. New student - shoes

I bought a pair of Crocs Specialists for clinicals and I couldn't be happier with them. They are inexpensive and you don't have to worry about them wearing out. Highly recommended. Just be aware that the sizes really run BIG, so order a smaller size ...
  24. Lost computer files

I've heard about that virus, or a variant of it. They talked about it on a radio show with a few IT folks who pretty much all said once you get it you may as well forget about all your files since there really isn't any way to recover them. So sorry ...
  25. Hospital experience in the Triad

If you plan on living in or near Burlington, then the Cone Health system is going to be your closest option. They have hospitals in and around Greensboro, including on in Burlington (Alamance Regional). I'm still a nursing student, but this system is...
