Emergencies
Ginger LOL! I'm a ginger, too!! This was my first year as school nurse. I'm in a high school. Emergencies: 2 SVT flares that wouldn't get better even with intervention that typically works for the students ( one had to have ablation) 2 lethargy/loss of consciousness ( with spice being a problem in our area, no way I'd take any chances.) 1 asthma flare Teacher with symptoms of MI 1 student back injury---SOB ( she ended up being okay--but we were worried about how hard she was hit and exactly where 1 pregnancy 1 hyperventilation that would NOT stop 1 severe chest pain with extremity numbness/tingling Good year I tell ya. I never ever hesitated for any of these. I'd rather the EMTs get here than not call. 2 more teacher workdays we have to be here---then I have 6 weeks off, then to training for my new job :)

Tactful way to address staff issue
rationale: Confidentiality. They can't argue that. I'd tell my principal and he can discuss at staff meetings before the school year starts.

Leavinggggg
School nurses, I have been a bit of a lurker, first year school nurse after 15 years in clinics---I won't be returning to school next year. I was offered a job as health science instructor at the high school I graduated from, less than a 1/2 mile from my house. I currently drive 35-40 minutes to my job. Just wanted to thank yall for ALL THE WONDERFUL information and insight you guys post everyday. It helped me ALOT through this year!!!!

New High School CNA Instuctor
I just accepted a position as Health Science Instructor also. I took it in high school and loved it. I've been working clinic and school nursing since 1999. I am super excited. SirDearis99, do you have any other websites/information. It is only the second year for the school to have the program, I think I may be starting from scratch.

Ridiculous Reasons to See the Nurse
OMG GAG!! I had a girl that said she coughed up something bloody and took a picture of it. I was NOT looking at it. I do not do well with phlem. I told her to keep it and show her parents.

Happy school nurse's day!
I know that as a nurse, most days go by that we feel unappreciated anyway. But as a school nurse, it feels like I am at the most unappreciated job EVER. I don't count on anything, but there are 1600 kids in this school---close to 100 teachers. This year is the first year this campus has had 2 nurses ( no WAY I would've stayed if they hadn't hired a second one). ONE teacher, the lead teacher bought me a cute gift as a thank you. I just want someone to say THANK YOU. What we do is not easy. Most days I feel like the hair in my head looks like I stuck my finger in a light socket! Is that so selfish of me?!

Random Thoughts: School Nurses
Agreed Farawyn! The kids have 19 more days of school. We have to stay 4 workdays after the kids are done. It seems like a full moon EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

Considering school nurse position
Yep! We all have to try something once. I learn something new everyday! And you will KNOW when to call 911! Trust your instincts! Let us know how it goes! Good luck!!!!

Considering school nurse position
T-Bird78, I worked pretty much all internal medicine and family practice before I changed to a high school ( 9-12). The first month, I had 1600 students to myself. They did finally hire a second nurse, but we are in separate offices 2 buildings apart. Pros: Watching these students grow and change into more mature adults. Getting to know my frequent fliers and helping them change to NOT frequent fliers Hearing my name and HI!! in the halls and cafeteria SCHEDULE!!! No more PA/insurance authorizations Hardly any phone time Cons: Salary Some parents/some teachers Nursing and education setting can be hard to mix---if you're lucky you will get a faculty that listens to what you have to say ( by the way, I HAVE AWESOME, SUPPORTIVE ADMINISTRATION!! that has made things MUCH better!) EVERYTHING is an emergency to the kids. Paperwork ( we are not yet electronic) Not knowing everything changing in the medical world. I had a student come in on a new medication and I did not know what it was. When I was in internal medicine, I was able to know these things with all the drug reps. Although I read medical journals and such, I still feel like my brain is getting smaller! It's a rewarding, yet tiring job. You have to trust your judgment and don't let the teachers walk all over you. I'm not sure if I will be staying. I believe you have to try everything once. Although, a bad day in the school is not worse than a bad day in my old clinic!!! Did I say that right? I'd rather have a bad day here than at the clinic---yall know what I mean :)

School Nurses Say the Darndest Things, Too
Jlha, I had a major giggle with that LOL!!!! I tend to put on my mean face early in the morning, and sometimes the kids are coming to say hello!!! I can't help myself!

South Alabama Summer 2015
I live in South Mississippi---about 45 minutes from Mobile. They did mention rolling over, but I still have to reenter everything into the 3.0.

South Alabama Summer 2015
Well I got mine---not admitted due to CAS application not being verified. I had everything submitted, had to make corrections and emails to CAS and it was never reverified. Maybe the new CAS 3.0 will be better.

I applied for 2015 Summer. Nursing CAS has all my transcripts. So I guess it's a wait and see now?!
