Volunteering!! How much time should I spend??
Hello, I am going to be volunteering in my local hospital, their volunteer program want you to commit to a specific shift each week, so I will be doing a four hour shift on sunday afternoons. Volunteering will give you a great chance to meet other people and practice introducing yourself and having conversations with strangers. It should give you a good confidence boost :)

Low GPA
Depends on the program... most all the private schools I am looking at are very competitive. Your friend should contact the schools she is looking at and ask them what their minimums GPA's are and also what is the average GPA of people accepted. Then your friend will have a better idea of where she will be able to get in to.

can anyone come in and see if i can get into a bsn program?
Have you talked to the schools that you are interested in applying to? They would be able to best tell you what their requirements are, each school is different.

Had a doctor give me great advice the other day. Something to think about.
Thank you for this post.. I have also wondered if I should go to med school instead of nursing school. But I don't want to lose my family life & social life to become a doctor!

Fall 2013 Schedule
This fall I am taking Chem, Stats, Physiology and Soc 101. The soc class should be relatively easy and I took Stats 10 years ago so hopefully it will all come back to me! Slightly nervous about taking both chem and phys together, but I have taken other chem courses before, so like the stats course I am hoping I remember what I have previously learned.

ASBN Programs
You can check the prereqs that different schools require on their websites or by calling them, they may require slightly different classes. Although out of the 5 programs I am looking at that are in my area, only one does not require chemistry.

Huge List of A&P Videos
This is a great set of information, thank you!! The series by the UC Berkley professor is of particular interest to me; I am taking an anatomy class this summer and I am watching the series to prep myself.

Are any of you active coupon users?
I do use coupons when I can, but you have to be careful that you aren't using them to buy something you really don't need or that you wouldn't have bought anyways. Like in the example above: yes, it's great if you can get a few dollars off a movie ticket, but I don't go to the movies in the first place because it is so darn expensive even with a coupon. I just wait for the movie to come out on Redbox and rent it for $1 or I watch something else on Netflix instead.

University of Rochester - ABPNN Fall 2013
Thanks for the input :) I still have a little ways to go before applying and will have to make my decision based on the schools that accept me (hopefully all the programs I am applying to will have me!). Til then, nothing to do but bust my butt finishing my prereqs! Maybe I will see you all at U of R soon :)

Denied for a mistake made by the University
Appeal for sure, and let us know what happens!

University of Rochester - ABPNN Fall 2013
Hi All, I am wondering if I could butt in with a question about the U of R program.. I am looking at applying for fall of 2014 and it looks like a fantastic program but the only thing holding me back is the cost. It is by far the most expensive program I am considering and they come right out on their website and say that there is little available for scholarships/grants so most people take loans for the full amount. Is this a deterrent to anybody? Is the program so good that it warrants the cost? Thanks in advance for any input :)

Premature Clinicals Question??
Have you talked to your school to find out if it is feasable to hold a job while in the program? Some of the schools I am looking at come right out and say it is impossible or nearly impossible to hold a job outside of the program. Even when you are not in class or in clinicals, there is studying and prep work that needs to be done for the next time.

What was your GPA if you were rejected?
I agree, that's one of the reasons I was curious... the schools I am looking at won't disclose their average GPA because it is different every semester. Some people seem to be getting rejected with high gpa's and some get accepted with lower gpa's that I would think would be acceptable... so I am just looking to get some general input
-
Can I still get into clinicals?
I also recommend talking to your school, it may depend on their policies. One of the schools I am looking at takes the average gpa of ALL the prerequisite classes you took, including the failures. So, even if you get an F on one try and an A on the next, they will average that out to a C. Also ask what the average gpa of those accepted to the program. The minimum may be 2.5 but the actual gpa of the students accepted may be much, much higher if the school is competitive. If you had more information about the school's policies then you could make an informed decision. Good luck!

What was your GPA if you were rejected?
Even if your school is points-based, I have found that the points are usually tied directly to your gpa. For example, one of the schools I am looking at uses a points system and you get more points for higher grades (If I get an A (4.0) in a 4 credit class, they multiply those numbers to get a total number of 16 points). If there are other ways of calculating points, I would love to find out more information in case I run across a school that uses a different method :)

What was your GPA if you were rejected?
The other thread on "what was your gpa if you were accepted" made me think of the opposite question, "what was your gpa if you were rejected"? I see some conflicting information on how high your gpa has to be to get into nursing school (and of course some if it depends on the program/school) but between this thread and the other one maybe we can see what is the general gpa of those getting accepted/rejected :)

Is anyone as old as me?
My mother in law was in her mid 40's when she graduated from nursing school... I met a lady at my school the other day whose mother went back to nursing school at the age of 60!! You are never too old to learn something new and improve your life :)

grades for nursing program
For all the schools that I have looked at, your GPA of previous coursework/prereqs is the biggest factor they look at when determining admission. They will also look at your application essay, references, volunteer work, etc, but GPA is the biggie.... Can you take some of your classes over to get a better grade?
-
Rejected
Oh so sorry This situation makes me so nervous... my grades are great too but I am so afraid I will not be accepted to nursing school next year... I plan on applying to several schools in our area to maximize my chances of getting in, are there other schools close to you that you can apply to?
-
Can't add A&P II yet?
Glad you were able to add it! I am on a wait list for Anatomy for this summer (I am near the top of the list) and my school would not let me register for physiology for the fall!! Their rules can be frustrating :)
-
How many points did you need to get into nursing school?
Same here, depends on the program... for our community college, they take the grade you get in your prereq class (eng 101, psy 101, developmental psy, anatomy, physiology & microbiology) times the number of credit hours. For example, if I got a 3.0 (a B grade) in eng 101 and it is 3 credit hours then that class is worth 9 points. They give you bonus points if you got through Anatomy & Physiology without failing/withdrawing, for being a veteran and for already having a Bachelor's degree in another field. For our program you need a minimum of 50 points and often more if the candidate pool is strong.

Books I Recommend to Fellow Students
Thank you for posting, will check out these books! My hubby thinks I'm nuts for doing so much pre-reading but I want to be prepared :)

Started with 50 down to 20
Wow, interesting to see how many people don't make it through the prereq classes... I am on a wait list for Anatomy for this summer, I am going to be bummed if I don't get in and then people end up dropping out!!
