  1. There are short BS to RN programs out there---usually a year long. Or you might consider medical school. I'd contact many schools b/c they can vary widely in their requirements.
  2. it's a fairly good program, but the content is entirely self-study. there are no lectures. sometimes there are videos from youtube and other sources. you do have to find your own clinical sites, preceptors, and a clinical supervisor each semester, which can be stressful. let me know if there's anything else you want to know!
  3. What may have been an April Fool's joke elsewhere was actually a regular day in the life of Nurse John.
  4. i'm perplexed.....if PMHNP is such a great field to go into, then why are so many universities discontinuing the psych track of their NP programs?
  5. ditto everyone else. another BS did not help me at all in the nursing world, EXCEPT at my facility those with any BS get paid $1 more per hour........so in about 50 years that degree (and student loan) will pay for itself....or something like that. i truly don't understand why nursing does not acknowledge any other BS. seems like a narrow focus to me. anyone else know??
  6. With shots, it's always better to give than to receive.
  7. Congrats on the job offer Pink Pinkster!!! And welcome to this site. Once you start working, I don't think it'll be as bad as you imagine. It's a matter of getting oriented to what that practice wants, and then it's just repetition, which helps boost your confidence. Soon you'll feel as confident as an APN as you do with management. If I were in your shoes, I'd be seeking APN jobs, not RN jobs. Why learn two different positions (which can be very different) when you've got the brains behind the APN? You can do it!
  8. I got a personal email of acceptance, then a few group emails. I had to decline though and know someone else did as well, so hopefully that means some of the others can move up into this class. Did you hear anything yet?
  9. just got an acceptance email this morning :)
  10. i couldn't wait for frontier's decision either and went with a different program (chiro RN i just sent you a PM). i am relieved to not have to book a flight with only 6 weeks to spare. Good luck to everyone!
  11. Well written article on how managed care has impacted nursing! You wrote some very true words.
  12. For how much longer should I keep trying to resuscitate this guy??
  13. An aquaintance of mine finished the FNP program at 75. She said it was always a dream of hers but kept making excuses and putting it off, and then finally decided to fulfill her dream.
  14. Thanks for the replies. I've been fortunate enough to be working as a nurse. I was just curious about this "nursing shortage" I hear about but don't see.
  15. The majority of my classmates from nursing school was unable to get hired, even a year later. And I know a great many nurses, both new and experienced, searching hard for nursing jobs right now. Yet people outside the field keep telling me they hear repeatedly about a nursing shortage. I have yet to see one. Anyone know WHERE there is a nursing shortage? Is there such a thing at the moment?
  16. Very often, I feel like a servant, but I don't mind... most of the time. I feel that I'm there to meet my patients' needs, and if I can meet the families' needs at the same time, that's great. When I interact with the patients, I'm so grateful that I can eat, sleep, pee, and poop----many of them can't, and many of them do rely on us to meet some of their most basic needs. Sometimes I'm grateful that I can do something for them in addition to just handing them meds and assessing them for our copious nursing notes. It's a way of giving of myself, and what an honor!
  17. I work night shift, so I usually go for a run b/w the time i wake up and have to go to work. I often skip it on the days of my 2nd and 3rd shifts b/c sleep is more important to me :)
  18. thanks for responding!! a 100% pass rate sure speaks volumes!
  19. Ellen NP, I'm curious---why in the world would your mom go back to do a BSN after being an NP?
  20. I applied to their program with a non-nursing BS and would've had enough similar classes to transfer out of those 2 bridge classes, but they were the only program that didn't accept me, and I have a strong sense that having a different BS put me at a disadvantage. When I inquired, they told me they only accepted 9 out of 85 applicants. When I looked more at their rankings in US News & World Report and at their tuition rates, I realized I wouldn't have chosen this program. Hope this helps!
  21. I can start a FB page if anyone is interested for Ball State FNP peeps out there. cnbowling---i don't know how hard it is to get in, but you can always call the school and ask how many people apply and how many are accepted.
  22. congrats!!! how exciting! when is frontier bound for you and how much does it cost? i applied to class 112, so i'm guessing it'll still be a little while before i hear!
  23. hey chiroRN, in a very unmerciful way, USA contacted me one day before the final deadline for submitting the acceptance packet that I was not qualified to begin their BSN-DNP program (and that they were sorry they didn't catch it till now!). Despite what they told me earlier, they decided that a related BS and MS (with very similar classes to their NP program) would not count at all since it's not a BS in nursing. Talk about leaving a bad taste in the mouth.
  24. raza, i had the same dilemma. i had to make decisions on several programs by Dec 1, and I don't think I'd hear back from Frontier for another month or two.
  25. True, I saw that it was rather few credits to get a different specialization of NP, but I was wondering more about the effort of MAINTAINING the 2 certs! Thanks for the replies
