That is an excellent idea Jose. With a shortage of skilled workers in nursing but also other professions, the internship would stand as the go between the knowledge and the clinic. What has happened to the apprenticeship programs anyway? For the new RN an internship or apprenticeship would give the hospital and physicians the experience that they are looking for in an employee and the much needed experience to the new RN. Make the apprenticeships/internships last about 6-12 months and during that time the provider has the apprentice and the apprentice is getting the much needed experience at the same time. What do you think? It just might be something that could be accomplished. Especially right now with a shortage of skilled workers.

Well, the High School's in the early sixties were pretty darn good. However, I have never been informed that I may have learning disabilities. That would be a first.

Well I can hardly move after reading that. The best Registered Nurses I ever knew were all C students. For that matter so were the LVN's those many years back. The schools never went by GPA's back then because just because you have a 3.9 GPA doesn't mean you are going to be a good nurse period. Maybe that is what's wrong with the nursing schools now. They are all looking for the high GPA's instead of looking for the one who is the really good nurse.

What about taking individual courses that move too fast at the college levels? I have a couple of classes that I understand but they move too fast for me so I don't do well on the tests. I am thinking about maybe using Straighterline. Have any of you ever used either Straighterline or another avenue to take individual requires courses?

That is exactly what it is. Your adventure. Now is the time you can do the second most wanted desire in your life. You were a nurse so that was your first, now what was it you also thought you would like to do? You are retired now, you don't need the money. So do, do, do! Go for it Girl!

If you have either an AS or a BS degree you can get into Health Information Management or get certified as a medical coder, your background in nursing is going to take you a long way for this field. Being a coder you would assignment codes to diagnoses and procedures performed by the Doc. You already are familiar with that. Then there is home health. The need for licensed personnel is high. Both of these positions pay very well.

This issue of schools refusing prerequisites is becoming a big topic in the student loan debt. It seems that they are going to start determining just why the student loan debt is so high and checking on these schools that are making students take classes over and over and over again before they even start their real required classes. I know this is true because I am one of those student. I have taken at least 32 credits that are not even going to count for me. They will count them against me though. Just figure out how much more in tuition these colleges get just from nursing students alone. It is something to follow up on.

Well I know what I am going to do. Catch up on my lost sleep and go out for a change. Get to know my neighbors who never see me and probably think I am a shut in. In a way, I guess I am.

Yes, I have. I was an LVN for about 8 years, but had to give it up due to not being able to find evening care for my 3 children. I did not realize that they had the bridge programs open anymore. The CC I am attending requires the course to be within I believe a 5 year period, so most of my college nursing was not counted because I could not go back to college until I was as old as I am now and that is pretty old. If they don't have them anymore, perhaps they should bring them back.

Well I was watching Nurse Jackie last night and the episode had a computer holding medications and nurses having to push a pin number to get patient's meds. Are computers going to take over nursing too? Can you imagine, a computer just like vending machines and it effectively replaces that part of a nurses job. So now I think that just maybe Licensed Medical Assistants could be in the works to save hospitals money.

There are no Medical Assistants in the hospitals here either.

What are MA's? Are they medical personel that are licensed for just giving meds? I live in New Mexico and I have not seen that yet but I have heard of them.

Do all the registered nursing programs in the US have the same classes and grading standards? Is there a any chance to get in with a say 2.7 gpa?

Being a financial aid student I am well aware that D is a fail. I did not take algebra in high school. Actually I have never taken algebra until now.

Why are they having trouble in California? There are jobs everywhere there. I don't know if you would like this or not, but Home Healthcare is really booming because of us baby boomers and it pays very well. You might check it out. Good luck!

I would like to find out about other schools other than the one I am attending now, that can give me college credit class in Intermediate Algebra and Anatomy & Physiology. The college I am attending now goes so fast I can't learn it. I received a D in it. A D around here is the biggest sin you can commit.

I applaud you all. I never was able to work 12 hour shifts, even when I was only25 years old. That would certainly put me in burnout.

Thank you for your replies and recommendations to me, I really appreciate it. I have just barely started to inquire at other schools. I have a 3.113 GPA so far even with the algebra and science classes. I will go ahead and start checking other schools. I could use some suggestions. I am about 15 credits away from an Associate Degree.

To: Irish_ Mist You know I never thought of that. Thanks for the idea! We are on break right now but there is a way to do this. I guess I just needed to find out from someone else that I wasn't exaggerating the experience with the A&P instructor. Should I do my A&P at a different college? Truthfully the whole incident was devastating. I don't even know what to do next, but I know this, your post really helped me. I am on break till January 17, which gives me time to do something about it. I think I am just going to file a complaint against him. I already got my money back, can I get my confidence back too? Unfortunately this is the only college to attend for the A.S. degree in nursing where I live. I was going to transfer to the university for the BSN program and I let that man took that from me. Now maybe I can just go ahead and take that class again. Right now I am hoping to find a college where I can do A & P online. Thank you so much for your post.

I am a pre-nursing student. My community college has lost its accreditation and so the algebra, biology, chemistry, etc. departments are having these prereq instructors help them weed out those who are almost finished with their prereqs, like me. There are now too many students to accommodate and that is how they have chosen to do this. I need to find another school that I can go to complete my nursing pre-reqs. Do you recommend the Excelsior college? Also do you know of any other colleges I might be able to go to? Here there are no C's allowed in anything right now and I am cannot get better than a C in my algebra classes. I have already taken 4 semesters of college and I don't know what to do frankly. My counselor says change majors, but I really don't want to do that. Any advice would be appreciated. Is board of nursing accreditation enough? Thanks!

Yes, you hit the nail on the head. Medical care costs are out of control in this country and yet the hospitals still continue to find ways of taking care of patients the cheapest way possible. Who wants to work for an employer who does not care about you? Why in the world did they every phase out LVN's? I was an LVN at one time. I think that is just bad business. I bet those places have a high turnover of their nurses.
