  1. i was going to make my own post for this but then i saw the op's question and i figured i would sort of insert a question mid-way through this post here, hope nobody minds. as far as for the doc's being arrogant, i wonder if they get mad at the nurses when they give information to the pts.? i mean i see a lot on here where people have said something along the lines of "find out the info. and tell your pt about it" (i hope you guys know what i am getting at). when you tell the pt what you know or have learned, then they say hey nurse so and so said _______ (whatever it was you told them), have you ever had a doc act as if you should not have done that? in other words do they ever get mad for you giving your 2 cents on the situation? i know this may be a confusing question, because i agree, nurses are the ones that deal with the people and doc's are the medicine, however do they ever act like you went over their head or whatever? thats one of the things i am concerned about going nto nursing. i am assuming though that if it is useful, they can't (and don't) say too much, right?
  2. :w00t: those were cute, thanks!
  3. hey guys...sorry to butt in here :chuckle just want to tell you what i know about medical assistants, being one myself. no i am not a nurse (but hope to be one one day ) and i know that. i never claimed to be one although i am sure there are others who have... :uhoh21: i did go to school (college), for 18 months, and i was told that we were about equivelant to lpn's. i now know that is a bunch of bs they gave us to get us pepped up ( :angryfire ) i think, though, that we are above a cna but below an lpn. we learned in school (using a hotdog :chuckle) how to give injections subq, im, and id. (hope i abreviated those right, its been a while... ) we also took a class in phlebotomy, got cpr certified, took a class in med. term, med. law and ethics, emergency procedures, pharmacology, ya know, stuff like that. (i have never gave meds nor would i want to at my current educational level.) baasically though, the only reason i wanted to reply to you guys was to say that one of the main reasons that i want to become an rn is because i love the medical field and helping patients, feeling good about what i do... (even though all i have really had a chance to do so far while working as an ma is do the vs and draw blood) and i want to further (the little bit of) knowlege that i recieved while in school for my ma degree. and yeah i totally agree with the fact that it is wrong for a ma to be letting her (unknowing) patients and family members think she is a nurse. i also agree that the reason ma's are at doc's offices are the cheapness of them (i was making $7.00 an hour!) oh well, theres my
  4. congrats on the graduation coming up!!! as for me, i am going to do my best to get into the rn program at sfcc and from there i am not sure. i may, once i am working, try to get my bsn from u of phoenix online but i have no idea. 2008 seems so far away that my life may be so crazy by then, i guess i will wait and see. good luck in whatever path you chose! :)
  5. Nahhhh, I wish... :chuckle I am just starting my prereq's at S.F.C.C. on March 9th (spring B)... Why? Are you in school here?
  6. ~*congrats to you!!!!!*~ :beercuphe :w00t: :smiley_aa  :yelclap:  :flowersfo
  7. blaine--i am in gainesville also (small world huh?) and i know that (as i am sure you probably do too) shands just opened the new nicu unit not too long ago. you could always call and see if they take "cuddlers".
  8. way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :balloons: :biggringi :roll :yelclap:   :smiley_aa :w00t: :beercuphe
  9. Hi all. I was just wondering if any of you could better explain this to me. I posted earlier about my BIL having his first child in June of 2005. We are all exstatic. We found out a few days ago (according to his g-friends sonogram) that it is going to be a girl. BUT the NEW thing that he told hubby and I yesterday is the doc's told his girlfriend that the baby has a marker for downe syndrome. They said it usually takes more than one marker for the baby to be born with down syndrome but now of course we are all nervous. If any of you can tell me exactly what you know about down syndrome I would be eternally greatful. (ex: just what are these "markers" they are talking about, what "causes" down syndrome, etc). Thanks!!!
  10. i agree with the above posters. seems like you found a "home". good luck and keep us posted!!!! :)
  11. Thanks for seeing things from the general public/medical assistant (who actually had not even had too much schooling anyways when my daughter was born) and not just from the nurse perspective...yes all I was doing was trying to share my story... Oh well.
  12. Thank you for your kind words marysunshine...they mean a lot!! :blushkiss :loveya:
  13. It came out harsh to me, and thanks to the two posters who thought so too. But it did shed some knowledge and I hope it helps the original poster, also. From now on I will shut up when I don;t know something, I am sorry for even replying since evidentally all I said was the wrong things!!
  14. Thanks for your input Vortex72. Yes, I am refering to Rn not LPN salary. I was reading in the Florida Forum that 36,000 is about average. Florida is a "right to work" state and we don;t say state taxes, so that being said, I am not going to stress over the $$ issue. Oh and lol about the avg. amount trashmen make, my hubby works for waste management and he only makes about 25,000 yr
  15. congrats to the new nurses and good luck to those who are waiting to take it. [/size :w00t: ]
  16. congrats to mosouth!!!!!!!!!!! rn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :biggringi :balloons: :melody: :roll :yelclap:  :bowingpur :flowersfo  :smiley_aa :biere: :beercuphe
  17. cool, then I will look into getting titers... Thanks a million :)
  18. wow...this one is interesting, as a future nursing student myself (once I get the darn prerequisites done...lol) I am probably going to be going through that same dilemma if they want copies. I too moved around a lot and have NO earthly idea where my records would be. Ugh... I hope I can find them because not that I mind the shots if it has to be done--but I can not afford to shell out a ton of cash for them to be redone. Oh well. Cross that bridge when I get there...thanks for the heads up though.
  19. You want my tubal story? :lol only because its kind of funny. My best friend at the time said that getting a tubal would be pretty easy...so I went ahead and did it. I can't use all the medical terms since I really don't know how yet but here it is in laymens terms I was a day "post-pardum" and my doctor told me (probably just so he could make more money from me looking back--sorry but I didn't like him!) that since I was already in the hospital it would be "easier" for me to have a tubal than to have to schedule something for my DH later on. Ok so anyhow, they took me in to do my tubal. I have no idea what they did to me (see told ya it was gonna be laymens terms :) ) but I was "awake" the whole time. I felt no pain...the WEIRD part was (and everyone always laughs when I tell this part of the story) I remember laying there on the bed and I could hear people talking and laughing and stuff but to this day I can not tell you what they were talkng about (It all sounded like a foreign language :chuckle ). Then to make matters worse, when they were done, I had no idea about the CO2 deal soooo I was drinking "coke". I had EXTREME pains (gas?) in my shoulder and NOBODY told me why. Finally a nice nurse (like I wanna be someday) said "ewe your drinking coke, your just adding to the gasses" and she told me thats why I was having that excrutiating pain in my shoulder...the gas! Geesh THANKS for SOMEONE finally tellin' me. As for my periods, they were worse for a while but have calmed back down (Jan. 17th was 3 yrs since surgery). Another issue I had was the wound though. My naval hurt like heck for WEEKS after my surgery. Maybe I just had a "bad" experience. Oh and remember the wonderful thing my doc told me when he came in to check on me a few hrs after surgery... Doc: "do tubals fail?"... Me: "yes, sometimes" Doc: "Thats right, one in three hundred fail".
  20. hey all...i was just wondering how accurate you feel sonograms ar in determining sex when you are 4 months along? the reason i am wondering is because my sil is expecting her first child and her and my bil really wanted a girl (it took fil 5x's for girl, dh and i 3x's for girl) and poof they called and its a girl. i am thrilled for them but just how accurate is it? i thought i heard once that its harder to mistake a boy for a girl than a girl for a boy? i am a happy aunt no matter what, just curious what ya'll think on this... :redpinkhe :yelclap:
  21. congrats to those who passed and best of luck to those still waiting... :balloons: :smiley_aa :yelclap: :w00t:
  22. Ahhh the things I have to look forward to... I am just starting my prereq's and laughed so hard at this post :) I will see I guess, soon enough
  23. hey all...i was just wondering if any of you were members of the florida student nurse association while you were in school? or if you are currently in school and a member? the reason i ask is because my c.c. is based on points to get in the asn program and i really want to join this association for the 5 points it will give me--problem is i am not sur how to do it. when i locate the website (at least i think its the website but it comes up as florida nursing student association, not fl. student nurse assoc...) it has a place to register but yet it wants to take you to the national nursing student association, if i join this is it the same thing or what?! i am confused :lol thanks for any help :)
