I am in Cincinnati and I know we have jobs down here! They are by no means easy to get, but better than what I am been told about the Columbus RN positions.

We are all human and Mistakes happen, but thank goodness your patient was not harmed. Just be sure to: 1) Always know AND practice within your scope of practice! 2) if you don't know about a certain device, procedure, medication, please please please don't use it or give the med without looking it up and consulting another nurse. It is really scary when people just assume " it's okay" when it is far from it. 3) Acknowledge your mistake, be honest about it, and learn from it!

I am a new nurse as well and I was told it would also be a year before I would be expected to float. I think you did the right thing in COA and your license. You need to solidify your nursing practice before they send you all over the place!

mL/hour= (250mL/400mg) X (1mg/1,000 mcg) X (250mcg / 1minute) X (60minutes / 1 hour) = 9.375mL/hour Look through the question and always start with whatever you are looking for. This question is asking for mL per hour so you start with the mL part at the first numerator. Then you just cancel out each fraction by making sure if there is a mg on the denominator there is a mg in a numerator somewhere in the equation ( it doesn't have to be directly next to each other, as long as it is in the equation)

I did see a lot of websites saying a grain was anywhere from 60-65mg so it definitely depends on who you are referencing. I'm glad another person was able to double check that.:-) Good luck tomorrow!

Here is my fine print: I'm a new graduate RN and have done maybe only 5 grain to grams/mg medication calculation questions. So please have another person double check this!! Ok so this is what I got: a few websites said 1grain= 60mg And I am assuming that the sq at the end of the atropine is implying that it is 1/200 grain per mL So with these assumptions: 60mg X 1/200grain= 0.3mg Then do your standard calculations: (1mL/ 0.4mg) X ( 0.3mg/1dose)= 0.75mL per dose

I completely agree!!!!! If this is your dream job then go for it and work your butt off! When you are presented with something new to do/learn simply say " I have never done this before, can I talk through it and then you correct me while I do it?" You have to remember that as a nurse you will NEVER know how to do everything. So your preceptor is trying to see what kind of nurse you are deciding to become. Would you tell the doctor " um I have never done that before, so can you prescribe something else?" OR are you going to be the nurse that looks up the hospital policy on a new procedure, look it up in your text reference, and then find another nurse that can be at the bedside to make sure you're doing it right? Seek opportunities and show them this is your dream job!!

Thank you! I look forward to all the NICU world is going to teach me! For my nursing management/role transition for nursing school I was in the NICU. I have not started orientation for my job yet, it starts on Aug 13th. The experiences I had while in the role transition were everything from feeder-growers to babies ventilated while on 3-4 drips and with an ICP. So I learned a lot in the short time but I also realize that it was minimal exposure to the specialized NICU.

Those are all great tips, but I am nervous about the whole " you don't know anything" note because I know I have SOO much to learn but I also don't want them to think I'm an idiot. I purchased a NICU text that my preceptor suggested when I was in my role transition and I have read alot and used it as a reference.... What im trying to say is that I am very eager to learn ANYTHING anyone has to teach me and I try to go above and beyond to research stuff on my own too. What I am worried about it that other nurses will treat me like I am an idiot because I am new. That will be the worst! I just want someone to not look at me or talk to me like I'm an idiot; but to just teach me!

I used NCSBN as my primary resource for their question banks. I used SO many resources and felt that NCSBN questions were JUST like what I had seen on nclex. But you also need to remember that you could do 5 million questions and it won't really help you unless you legitimately do a through content review. So stick with it, brush off any doubt, and believe in yourself!!! You can do it!! :-)

I just graduated nursing school and I remember my advisor saying the same thing before nursing school started. I cried about stressing over bills and eating peanut butter and jelly to get by, but I had to make sacrifices. I moved in with my mom, sold my car to have one significantly cheaper with no car payment, and then it allowed me to only work once a week. I won't lie and say it wasn't an absolute life change, but it was something I needed to do to keep my sanity in nursing school and I am SO grateful I did it. And btw, if you significantly decrease your hours and your pay is significantly less you should talk to your financial aid advisor. There is a form you fill out that show them proof of your income ( or lack thereof) and allows for your EFC to be significantly lower. I originally didn't get any grants but since I literally was making 1/3 of what I was before I ended up getting a large grant. Hope this helps!

I am so sorry this is something you have to go through. I am very appreciative of the fact they you are willing to share you experience so that numerous nurses can learn from it. I am a new grad starting in the NICU in two weeks and will definitely use some of your suggestions while in orientation. Just by reading your initial post I know you will make a great nurse because of your ability to learn from past experiences, apply them, and institute teamwork! :-)

I am very blessed to have the opportunity as a new graduate to have a job and ecstatic that I will be working in a level III NICU. I was able to do my "Role Transition/Nursing Management" within a level III NICU so I feel like a have a general idea of what to expect. I am wondering if the seasoned RNs would be able to share some of their knowledge on what I should know going in on the first day. You have to remember that as a new graduate I have a very generalized knowledge and NICU is a entirely different ball game. I also would love to know if you have any 'unwritten rules' you live by that helps you in your practice.... For example: one thread says " never trust a 35 week neonate" but i would not have known that unless reading what you all are saying! Any pointers/help would be AwEsOmE and thank you!!

Congrats! So exciting! I start August 6th and its my first job as a new graduate RN too! It's going to be an exciting and nerve wracking ride for all of us.

Well said!! That is exactly what j was thinking as I was reading all of her responses. I think you most definitely need those 2years of NICU experience before jumping into the DNP program. You might be pleasantly surprised that what you love most is being the bedside RN!

This person is a physical therapy assistant who took a photo with a special needs child and posted it with her name included on the photo. She also openly posts information on what facility she works for on her Facebook page. I just wanted to clarify that it was indeed a hippa violation, and she had taken it off her Facebook a few hours later when two people had made comments about hippa. So my question is, if it was unintentional and she took it down, do I still need to report it?.... And I'm pretty sure I already know the answer :-/

Definitely apply!!! I am a new graduate RN and I absolutely LoVeD my NICU role transition so I just applied and told myself " what's the worst they could say?"... I ended up calling the NICU floor and asking to speak with the RN manager. She picked up and said " send me your resume and I will call you in a few days"... She ended up calling HR and I got an interview. I actually got a job as a new graduate in a level III NICU! So being a little unconventional and seeking out the RN manager pays off! As I was on Facebook recently and a person posted a photo if her and her patient which also included the patient's first name. I am just curious if we are mandated to report HIPPA violations. I unfortunately do not want to be the " whistle blower" when it comes to this but I also know that it is against our hippa regulations.
