  1. Just stick to it, i didnt feel comfortable till about my 4th year of ICU, dont feel stupid about asking questions and just get to know the nurses you can always rely on. Soon you will be walking to the hospital strutting as if you know it all, just remember, you dont.
  2. Highest i have gone is 90 of levo, with 400 of neo 30 of dop, and vasopressin, but i knew the guy was not going to make it, status post code, too many comorbidities, but family wanted everything, done, just document what doctors, are ordering and at what time. your charge should have been there and backing you up as she should be more experienced. You did fine, just need a little more ageing with this situations. Once your old like me, your pulse will hardly even change.
  3. ICU does require a strong back, especially with pts that are intubated and sedated. I usually only requite help if moving them up in bed, but then again im 6 foot 280lbs and all MAN.
  4. We barely started using flexiseals in our unit last year, and now pts are accepting them. Have not needed to use nasal trumpets attached to foley bags anymore.
  5. Try University of Texas at Brownsville, its all online. You will be doing all reports and papers, no patient care at all. I think they shortened the program to 2 semesters down from 3. http://blue.utb.edu/BSN/ . This is where I recieved my bachelors but that was 4 yrs ago and wasn't all online.
  6. You place the flared side in first and other tip to empty foley bag, just be careful as not to damage any tissue, I have mostly used them on hepatic pts on lactulose that poop all night. Oh it is frowned on in our unit, but try and keep a pts skin intact when they are usually pooping straight for 24hrs.
  7. ARDS, doc had it at 30 for a day, but then again i wouldnt trust this pulmonologist to collect a sputum sample from me.

  9. We used to have a differential, but when another health system took over, well that went out the door. But we work where we want, so i dont think there should be a difference in pay. Sure you get sicker patients at times but its only one pt and you know them back and forth, on the floors you dont get to know your pts as well. If you are putting your ass on the line daily it is because you choose to.
  10. Well I have worked for two hospitals in south Texas within the same system, one required it one did not. Once we were giving albumin to a jehovah witness and I was wondering if they knew where it came from.
  11. I work at a hospital where we have an sicu that gets everything, and i dont see it as a problem. I enjoy having patients of all kinds, i love neuros, but i also do cabgs and iabps, i dont see why anyone would complain about it, I am always up for a challenge. But if you are not comfortable or interested in learning new things hey thats ok too. Abel
  12. You should be yourself and pay no attention to the jerks that might offend you. I for one am one of those jerks, I have gotten counseled for the jokes and comments I make. Then again I was brought up in a strong catholic household and Dad is very macho. But I have learned over the years to be more tolerant. Do what you want, but there will be some people that won't be too tolerant.
  13. You dont have BSN yet? dont even worry about your GRE scores, you have plenty of time. Not to sound mean, but by the way you come across you sound sort of young? 23 or so.
  14. Since you are from the houston area, lots of the larger hospitals have intern programs for new nurses. they try to expose you to all aspects of critical care while still having a preceptor making sure you dont get into trouble.
