"Fixin' to die"
I have been a nurse for 27 years .My mother was from Virginia. Now my credibility is being called into question (yes,I really am a nurse) and I am being called prejudiced,too..( 50% Italian American and 50% southern myself) The article's headline reminded me of something I would see on the front of the National Inquirer while waiting in line at the grocery store. This reminds me of the discussion over calling patients "dearie","sweetie" or "Hon". Am over it,Peace to you all

"Fixin' to die"
It's so funny that the majority of you disagree. The members of this board have slammed posters for spelling and grammar to the point that they left. And to call me names because I hold a differing opinion just proves your own ignorance. I stand by my opinion.I would not say to a family member "your dad is circling the drain" or " fixin'to die".I would not report it to a physician,I would not use it publicly especially during an interview. Let's talk about " cultural awareness".It is a regional colloqialism. No place for it in this context in my opinion. Thanks for yours,no need to call me names.

"Fixin' to die"
I did read the story,I also know that terms such as "fixin' to die" "circling the drain" etc.I also know it is "regional".My point is it makes her sound ignorant. We nurses continue to strive to be recognized as professionals.I would th ok no anyone with even a minimum of education would put their best foot forward during an interview and use proper English.I guess it's my issue.

Meal times
I know meal times and snack times are regulated( meaning the numbers of hours permitted to lapse between them) I have worked in LTC' s that changed the shift times to accommodate (6a to 2p from 7a -3p) Resident were permitted to attend the dining room in their robes if they wished. I'm pretty sure if a resident demands a tray later in the morning that would need to be accommodated. I worked on a 22 bed dementia unit, breakfast trays came at 8am.As the aides did am. care the residents were brought to me in the dining area were I gave them meds, juice, toast and cereal.By 7am everyone was up and ready for the hot platter.

Does Death Have A Smell?
Oh,Lovey-it's not you. It's stuck on you and you need a fresh breeze to blow it off.And a prayer .Smell coffee beans or fresh ground coffee,lavender,peppermint,orange...Or vanilla extract. We humans are so dependent upon technology now that we tend to ignore our basic senses, our sense of smell, our intuition.Except for those of us in this field...

Pulse Oximeter discrepancy question
Also check your facility policy-ours prohibits personal equipment like your pulse odometer, automatic B/ P cuffs, thermometers.People buy second hand junk on eBay,fail to maintain and calibrate, etc. and our admin feels the accuracy of the data collected is questionable.

Teaching a CNA how to chart
Try to limit them to graphs, flow sheets or "fill in the blank from these choices" via electronic charting. No offense meant to any cna's on the board,I worked as one for years. You would NOT believe the narrative notes our unlicensed staff have entered in the electronic medical record.Opens a big can of worms. Our admin had to stop it." Resident sitting on bed looking bad".No follow up,nothing reported to the nurse.

Mr. Harry the Excessive Hair Patient
I worked as an aide for years,The facility I work in now is a recognized trading and certification center in my state.I know the curriculum.I never delved into the argument surrounding your scope of practice.A monkey can be trained to perform pretty complicated procedures.End. You can spout that you are aware of the generational, cultural norms of hygiene and call me "ignorant" for pointing out that aspect of the issue but in your comments you clearly continue to leave the impression you'll continue to do whatever you think is "a good idea".Your immaturity shines through your posts. I have worked with plenty of cna's and a few nurses with the same "it's all about me and what I think is right" attitude through the years. They are long gone from my current workplace-let go for making gross errors in judgement I have performed my share of incontinence care,is there anything worse than a wrinkled, saggy old scrotum that sat in bm for hours due to dementia and violent resistance to care? Nothing here that plenty of soap, water and wash clothes can't fix.Should we shave heads because hair gets tangled and greasy? What happens if you nick the skin down there? You set a sequalae of events in motion that you can not control and you just don't get it.You really don't seem to care.

The Patient's "Guests"
And we can never assume they have common sense, either.Simple common sense would keep a visitors butt in a chair ands their off equipment until they could speak to staff to find out what they can and can't do for their loved one.Sadly it seems common sense is being bred out of human beings. We feed our kids took animals .....

crushing meds, best foods to disguise taste
As a friend it's not your job to educate-you risk losing that friendship.Your job is to provide emotional support and encourage them to seek and accept support and education from appropriate sources .I have worked with many families who tried to strictly control and aggressively manage their demented parent's health.Do you know how many regretted those decisions in the end? When confronted by the horror show of the end stage of the disease they realized what they had done. That's why support from groups like t he Alzheimer's association is so important-it helps to talk to people who have walked the path before you.

Mr. Harry the Excessive Hair Patient
Was just wondering if you read the great information given to you on this thread. The greatest difference between a CNA and a nurse has been perfectly illustrated. You just don't know what you don't know.Every patient has his or her unique cultural, religious, generational beliefs.A nurse knows that and honors it.

Where is the snowflake pot stirring smiley? Didn't someone make that awhile ago? Still waiting for the OP to come back but I suspect a hit and run.

crushing meds, best foods to disguise taste
Please encourage your friend to seek some support from organizations like the Alzheimer's association. She needs education as well. Why would she choose to deprive her mother of foods food pleasure when she has a terminal disease?

How should this have been handled by facility?
The nurse may not have lied purposely either.I had a family call me a liar when they uestioned a nurse about their loved ones "order for morphine. The nurse informed them there was no order for it and proceeded to document exactly what the family said about me.Without reviewing the orders, without realizing I got an order for a fentanyl patch due to this residents refusal of meds and without bothering to review my notes which included ALL the info and the fact that I had explained it in painstaking detail to THIS FAMILY MEMBER...Nuts,they are all nuts
