New Student Loans Rules
I am starting a community college in the fall, (actually tomorrow) and I have a previous bachelor's, which means, I have WAY more student loan debt than you ( way more than 15,000) and I was able to get sub and unsub fed. loan. are they denying you for federal loans? because there are rules to lifetime limits (something like in the 30,000's for dependant students and 50,000 for independent). you may want to check on the financial aid policy at the school to make sure they can say that.

Buy or Rent Nursing Textbooks
I bought all my books from amazon or ebay. I went to amazon first and took a "LOOK INSIDE" on some of them. I also asked the teachers in orientation which books can we get that are a previous edition. My books should have come to about $900 if I got them all from the campus bookstore, but in all, I paid about $400. I bought one or two at a time, and sometimes amazon let's you "trade" them back for amazon gift cards. I would buy, not rent. example: I got the brunner and suddarth textbook of medical surgical nursing (that is being sold for $100-200) for $26.00 on ebay, and this was the current, required edition.

First Day of Nursing School
how old can our vaccinations be?? I didn't think of that. I start classes on August 13th and have my physical on the 1st. I just thought I would need to get them again. (I'm 39 and just read your post).

Career Change
I am a social worker (have been for 15 years), and was in the same boat as you. I am starting my first semeater of nursing school this fall, whoohoo! First of all, is there any community college (maybe not the closest to you) that offer any of the classes on-line? I needed psych., nutrition and sociology, which I took on line. I also took the chem and anatomy class on line and the local community college had the labs on the weekend. Are there any weekend classes?? I gave up my nights and weekends for 3 years to complete my pre-req's. Now I am still a full time social worker, and will start an evening weekend nursing program in the fall. I also love my job (I am a pediatric social worker in a medical specialty clinic), but I love nursing even more. If you keep thinking about it, Go for it!! Feel free to inbox me and ask me ANY questions!!! Hope this helps!!

Older Nursing Students
go for it!! I am 39 and will start nursing school in the fall. This is a career change for me. I thought I would be out of place in the sea of younger more energetic students, but I am in an evening weekend prgram and half the class is my age. I love it!!!

Nursing student loans
take a loan. i am 39 and working on rn as a second degree. i am taking out additional loans, so what. If you know how much you can manage to borrow and have say 100-200 taken out of your check for student loans at the very beginning after you graduate, you will be fine.

Do you have a plan B?
I applied to a nursing program last year and did not get in. I did not have the option of changing my major, becuase nursing is a career change for me. I just saw Kvedaa's post and that was what I had as my plan B. I was going to get my CNA and apply to the nursing program this year. If you don't really want to change your major, that's a foot in the door!!!

Midlife Career Change to Nursing - Advice, please
I am in Baltimore. I am 39, and have been a social worker for 15 years. About 3 year ago, I decided to return to school in be a nurse. I was afraid, but I worked full time, and went to school at night and on weekends (in 1 semester taking anatomy 1 and micro!! with labs). I am starting a 2nd bachelor's porgram for RN in fall. I also have heard rumblings about no nursing shortage anymore, but when I go into the sites like indeed, they say that nursing is going up in need due to people living longer and needing more care. They say there will be another big shortage by 2016. I work in a hospital now (for now still as a social worker) and all they talk about is that there are not enough nurses (all the departments in our hopsital are under a hiring freeze EXCEPT nursing)

Any good books to read before starting A&P this fall?
I don't know about books, but I took A and P I and II and micro in 1 year. The text books for anatomy, I sarted looking through all the diagrams as soon as I got the book. Our class recommened netterman's anatomy flashcards. I would HIGHLY recommend them. I work full time while going to school and can't always have my books out at work. the flashcards cost about 25-30 new, but I got mine on ebay for about $11, from someone that used them once. I take them to work (if you buy them with the code still in it, you can also get online access to the flashcards.) the other thing I did was downlaod any free A and P podcasts to my ipod. Hope this helps.

Any older students??
Age does give you a leg up. when some are talking about parties and peers, you are thinking deadlines and tests. I am 38 and have decided to change careers!!! I am in pre-req's and will apply to my nursing program in the fall. To me, it feels like I am retaining more information and learning more, than when I was in school 20 years ago, but then again, maybe now I am paying attention!!LOL. Hey, I have 10 years on you, so if I can do it, so can you!!! Good luck. time management is the key!!!

Has anyone taken A&P and Microbiology in the same semester????
I took micro and a & p 1 while working full time. It's a lot but it is doable. I got a "b" in both classes. If u are not working right now, it should not be a problem!!!! Good luck.

Trying to decide if it's worth it
I am in sort of a similar boat. I got my master's degree in social work in 1998, and have worked in the field all this time. I am now in schhol for my ADN. I still have loans from my other 2 degrees. I went over the nursing vs. sw salaires and how much it would cost me, and you know what?? I don't care. I am piling this loan on top of the others and doing what I have wanted to do for some time. Yes, I will have a paycut for a few years, but the experience and flexiblity I will get from nursing is worht it!!! Hope this helps!!

First week of Nursing School and I am off to a bad start...Help!
I have not read the other replies or posts, but all I can say is hang in there. I was in a similar boat. Although I was not in the beginning of my first week of nursing, I was in my prerequisites in science and working full time when my brother was murdered in march of this year. That whole week away from school and work ( I missed 2 major exams) I thought about taking the time off and withdrawing for the semester, but when I communicated with my professors, I found they were very accommodating and understanding. And actually throwing myself into studying and catching up helped me to deal with some of the grief. It's now 6 months since my brother has been gone. I know he is happy I came through and did not stop. Hope this helps. And feel free to send me a MSG. Anytime. Sorry for you loss!!!

I got a white card. I had to re-fax them my current schedule. so I prob. will not get the pink card until sometime next week. but I spoke with them, and everything is in now. The card said by mail? so I guess they fixed the glitches of people getting status on their Simon. at least all our stuff is in now.
