  1. Second the headphones, I invested in a pair of Bose noise canceling headphones completely worth every penny. I also bought an anatomy coloring book to review before I started :)
  2. Northeastern assigns preceptors for all of the specialties as far as I know.
  3. Hi guys, just finishing up my first clinical semester it's been pretty busy! I graduate may 2017 so looking forward to next years clinicals :) I'm still working part time possibly reconsidering for the fall.. Nice to hear from everyone!
  4. I'm working part time nights while in school full time. It's not the easiest thing especially with daytime clinicals but it's working for the moment :)
  5. It also depends on the particular unit, we're moving more towards hiring straight night positions because most of the rotating shift people (obviously) want to go to just days if they've been there long enough. In general, we work rotating shifts for at least 5-8 years.
  6. Good luck! I moved to Boston 2 weeks after accepting a job offer and didn't know anyone in the entire northeast. It was really scary but I think it can teach you a lot about yourself and I think I'm definitely a stronger person because of it. I stayed in a hotel with my dog and cat for a week while I looked for a place to live and then rented a place for a little while. It helped to have a good work support system once I started and it was a blast to explore the city and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I'm from Ohio and would love to go back at some point. I hope it goes well if you end up doing it!
  7. Do you find the job itself appealing? I'm still working on my MSN, but I truly enjoy the work and the role of an NP. It's a lot of work but will be worth it if that's ultimately something you see yourself doing. Good luck with whatever you decide!
  8. Dranger, thanks for the info I love the Bates textbook but didn't realize there was a pocket guide.
  9. Thanks Boston! I'm also starting my first clinical rotation this semester, definitely a little nervous!
  10. I've started using the sleepfan app on the iphone, it has a couple of different settings to mimic different types of fans. I recently switched to permanent nights (only 24 hours though), and it's really nice to not have to rotate every 2 weeks! I'll take a benadryl only if I have to work the next night. I was able to sleep for almost 8 hours today and wasn't drowsy at all getting up. Wish I could keep the pets off the bed... I woke up today with the rottweiler laying across my legs and the cat on my chest :)
  11. When I lived north of the city, I would drive to Alewife and take the red line to Central Square and then the 47 to the Longwood area. It's about $7.00 to park there. Or you could drive to the Riverside station and take the D line to Fenway but like the pp said, the green line can be really annoying :) If you work at Children's, there's a shuttle that runs from Children's Waltham into Longwood and it's free to park in the Waltham garage (or it used to be). And yes moving into the city is definitely more convenient KelRN! I don't miss the commuting at all!
  12. Hi there! I live in the area and work at BWH, feel free to send me a PM with any questions it's a little crazy getting to know the area when you're first trying to move here :)
  13. I'm married to a med student :) I agree with the above poster, it's tough but 100% depends on the person and the relationship. We don't tend to go out much, most of our free time is spent just relaxing at home and making time for each other. Completely doable but yes it can get a little stressful at times!
  14. I think it's definitely true about coaches pushing you. I've been doing Crossfit for about a month now and the coaches spend so much time going over basics and how to scale the workout that I've never felt like I was being pushed beyond my limit. I just finished the basic training course, where the first half hour of the class is strictly technique (and injury prevention) on a certain move. And then the WOD is scaled to what you can handle. Our classes have 2-4 people in them, so it's really individualized. I'm a little nervous to move on to the regular workouts, but I feel like I'm ready!
  15. Hi guys! Are any of you still active on here? I've been a nurse for about a year and just started Crossfit last week. Loving it so far!
