How do you handle work stress?
Thanks for the reply. You said you work 12-hour shifts, which part of the day is most stressful for you? Another thing, both my parents are nurses... how do you keep from your work affecting your home life? If my parents come home from a stressful day, its just best to stay out of their way or they will jump down my throat for the littlest of things... Any tips on how a child of a nurse could make it easier for their parents?

Senior project is stress in nursing...comments welcome!
To better ask my question, I want to know of some of the sources in which the stress comes from. As well as the affects from the stress like, how did it affect your performance on the job? Stress is different for everyone, so if you were affected physicaly or mentally, all responses are welcome. Anything will help, personal stories, co-worker's stories, or just examples. Thanks!

Patient care is everyones concern! When I was an NA I helped all I could....As an RN I continue to do same. That includes bedpans.....emesis.....spilled drinks.....room and unit cleanliness.....denture and mouth care.....any and ALL of it! Team work works best when all the team is playin!

Why do i hear that nurses are mean???
i don't think we are so much "mean" as we are tired and ****** off about the work load and short staffing.

Have you ever had a pt that you knew in real life?
bEING FROM A SMALL COMMUNITY HOSPITAL i HAVE TAKEN CARE OF MANY FAMILY AND FRIENDS AS A MATTER OF FACT THAT IS HOW i MET MY HUSBAND...HE WAS A FRIEND OF A FRIEND AND MY PT! jUST CARE FOR THEM LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND DON'T FEEK OBLIGATED TO GO ABOVE AND BEYOND ANY MORE THAN FOR ANY OTHER PT. IF YOU FEEL YOU CAN'T REMAIN OBJECTIVE THEN IT IS TIME TO JUST BE THE FRIEND AND LET ANOTHER CO-WORKER BE THE NURSE.

Get well notes for patients
we do this as well. on our unit we take pics at various stages of their recovery (with their signed consent of course) the we all sign the card and mail it with the pics so they can see how far they have come. they like the idea.:redpinkhe

If You Knew Then What You Know Now
i absolutely would.....there is no choice for me as i have always felt compelled to care for people. i wish i would have done it sooner. i don't like how far away from the bedside nurses have been pushed tho. please don't let the rants get to you....nursing is a challenge and this forum is a safe place to decompress, laugh at the things only a nurse finds funny and support, cry with or to each other. if you feel that you want and need to be a nurse go for it! good luck in whatever your choice!

Kid breath sounds
This is true. Also use a pediatric stethescope. Kids are not little adults and you have to do things a little different.
