I'm a Troy University FNP student in the Pensacola-Milton-Gulf Breeze area and currently doing my first preceptorship at a military clinic. It's going very well and I'm really enjoying it. My preceptor is amazing; she has a natural knack for teaching. I'm looking for 2 preceptors for this summer, Peds (90 hrs) and Women's Health (45 hrs). I'm an optimistic, humble, eager-to-learn, compassionate person and I would be truly grateful to anyone that is willing to take me under their wing-so to speak. EWRN, How did things turn out for you? Did you quit? That place sounds horrendous. I hope you name names on the hospitals to avoid forum.

Grooming can be stressful, but nearly as stressful as nursing imo. I owned my own mobile grooming businesses before. I really enjoyed it for the most part. I didn't enjoy always being covered in a fine coat of dog fur though. Iol. You must be feeling really discouraged right now. Most of us go in to nursing to make a difference, because we genuinely care. It is terribly sad that we get backed into a corner, having to provide unsafe care or quit. Fortunately, you are brand new. You can look for something different, like flu shot clinics or home health care. You can pretend as though the first nightmare never happened. Good luck.

When getting a blood glucose, I used to always say "pick a finger, any finger, but the middle finger." I once said that to a pt without a middle finger! Luckily, he thought it was funny. Also, a pt complained once to administration about nurses calling her a cow. It turns out they were talking about the Computer On Wheels, not the pt!

That was good! I actually laughed out loud. Tears and all. Ironically, I've done that to a pt once. Felt awful.

Bump. I'm curious about this as well. I'm an RN working on an inpatient Oncology unit. I am applying to FNP programs and have been wondering about working as an Oncology NP.

No. I'm in Florida currently, but I'm from Indiana. Indiana just happens to have several quality, affordable options, so I'm looking there instead of locally Good luck.

A girl that I worked with was a no call, no show. A few days later she showed up. Her excuse for not coming? A tornado pushed her car off the road and she need stitches on her scalp. I sympathized and tried to look at her scalp. I don't know why she wouldn't let me see!!!

I will be applying soon, as I'm I'm my final semester of my BSN currently. I'm originally from Indiana and am considering Ball State, IPFW, ISU, USI and Indiana Wesleyan. My GPA is under 3.5 though. I had a complicated pregnancy and delivery, so I didn't focus on my studies as well as I could have. I hope that doesn't prevent me from getting in.

That's great! Congrats. :) If you don't mind sharing, what's your GPA, years of nursing?

Do any Pensacola area hospitals have unions?

I believe IPFW still does. They're in Fort Wayne Indiana.

I'm not in Seattle, but about 18 miles away. Anyway, my hospital base starts about $28. I get 15% for working per diem, another $3.50 or so for NOCs, and another $3.00 or so for weekends. Nurse:Patient ratios are good, and so is morale.

Housing is pretty expensive in WA, so I'm looking forward to prices in FL. They look to be about half the cost of WA! Warm weather most of the year sounds fantastic. :)

I'm working on my BSN currently. I have one semester left. I'll have to give that a try. I didn't think HR would give out that kind of information, but they may. It's worth a try.

I wonder if panhandle area hospitals offer an incentive for working per diem and night shift. I figure I'll make a little less base rate in Fl than WA, but I don't want to give up too much.

I currently work as an RN in Washington State at a hospital with a union. I have good benefits and make a good hourly wage. I am interested in moving to the Gulf Breeze area, and am trying to ascertain what a med surg RN (with one year experience) might expect to earn per hour working night shift. I currently get an extra 15 percent per hour because I work per diem and I was wondering if hospitals in that area offer the same. I appreciate all input. Thank you very much.

I'd say something like "a masters (or doctorate) degree in nursing and a license to diagnose and write prescriptions is exceedingly more than "just a nurse", but I would happy to turn you over to a physician."

Tips: 1. Don't act like a know it all. Be confident, but humble to those with more experience. 2. Don't be afraid to call Docs. They're a means to an end. 3. If you don't know a procedure, look it up. Don't try to "wing it". 4. Everybody have bad days, nurses included. However, when you do, remind yourself of 2 things: A. It could be worse. YOU could be admitted to the hospital! B. Your pt is the reason that you even have a job. Be thankful. :) 5. Come up with a good "brain sheet" to keep yourself organized.

We got a cookie, milk, and a multicolored pen. I felt more like a school girl than a grown nurse.....but I was happy they showed appreciation. I truly like my job.

Are the ebooks/materials included in the price of tuition?

I believe you. Having tried a partial and subsequently HATING it, I'm now quite willing to get implants and root canals/crowns. Dentures may work well for some, but not this girl! I'm going to invest in myself. :)
