  1. It takes a lot of creativity, critical thinking, and multi-tasking. It really is its own specialty!
  2. Congrats, Tewilson90, on the new job!!!!
  3. I found the resources on their web sites very helpful for private duty nursing and becoming an independet contractor. Info on what you asked about can be found at: National Nurses in Business Association (NNBA) Nurse Entrepreneur Network ___________________ In the National Nurses in Business Association (NNBA), there's a section called "Patient Care Provider Q & A" (under "Q & A") which could answer some of your questions. (I am not a member of these organizations. I found their sites useful when no one would answer my questions about these topics or assist me with private duty nursing. I hope they help you.)
  4. IL has an "Illinois Chapter: National Private Duty Association" (link below) or you can google for it. Illinois Chapter: National Private Duty Association - All Private Duty - All The Time - Home Care You Can Trust There's another online poster named "HmarieD," who posted about IL private duty licensure awhile back (link posted below). She may have more info on how private duty nursing works in IL. It would be nice to have a similar organization as the one in WI, to be in all states. What a model for other organizations! Thank you WI for trailblazing ahead! https://allnurses.com/private-duty-nursing/private-duty-licensure-362029.html
  5. Try googling Minnesota private duty nurse. A site connected to the dhs.state.mn.us popped up: MHCP Provider Manual - Home Care Services - Private Duty Nursing (PDN) Services If you scroll down to where it says "Eligible Providers," you can find the answer to your question.
  6. If you google Tennessee private duty nurse, a tennessee.gov web site pops up: http://tennessee.gov/hsda/news/APPLYC~1.PDF Hopefully, you can find answers to your questions at the above link. Are you making headway getting your NPI #?
  7. County or city public health departments.
  8. The thread "private duty nurse" by nurse marie (started 8/17/1999) has really good information on how to get those provider #s. Being billing independently as an RN, LPN, or NP depends on your state. From reading all these posts, it seems a nurse (who wants to provide nursing services independently) would 1st get the tax ID # at the IRS web site. (2) Obtain nursing malpractice insurance (e.g., NSO) (3) Obtain the NPI # at the CMS web site (4) Obtain the Medicare provider # at the CMS web site (5) Obtain the Medicaid provider # from your state (since Medicaid is state-by-state). (6) Advertise in craigslist, professional associations and organizations, your state's Alzheimer's Association, newspapers, word-of-mouth, personal web site about your services. (start a local group of private duty nurses or independent nurse contractors for referrals, etc) Anything steps missing for those who are experts at this?
  9. In the search box (of all nurses), type in "private duty nurse" by nursemarie. She started the thread a while back (Aug 17, 1999), but there has been new info added. Advertising is typically done through craigslist, word-of-mouth, and professional organizations/associations. The Private Duty Nursing Forum has been the most informative by far and free.
  10. I messaged you through allnurses.
  11. i would like your help! (private message me if you prefer)
  12. I find myself cleaning and sanitizing the areas that I work in often, just from my own habits. This is so that I can work in a clean, safe, and sanitized environment to care for the client. I would hope this keeps my client and myself from getting sick.
  13. The Texas Nursing forum would be a good place to start in asking about Houston area PDNs. Hope this helps!
  14. Jenn55e replied to WI_home_RN's topic in Private Duty
Why is that? The misconception that "RNs doing private duty or home shift work are losing their skills" seems to be rampant. You said it best! These cases involve higher level nursing skills and processes. I learned more in private duty / home care nursing than any place else!
  15. Jenn55e replied to WI_home_RN's topic in Private Duty
how about professional nursing organizations or state nursing newsletters (unless its not allowed)? i'm surprised about the lack of responses.
  16. Becoming a medicaid provider was discussed previously in this forum. You could do a search on "private duty nurse," "private duty nursing??" or "Medicaid/Medicare provider" on allnurses. I know that Lisa1203, Rita Laboy, and WI_home_RN were very helpful in explaining this. Someone named Tondi was also very helpful, but she charged for the info. I think her site is asktondi, or something similar to that.
  17. Do you want to work for hospitals, facilities, or individual clients? (so we can point you in the right direction)
  18. I had so many questions about how to start. This thread helped out a lot! https://allnurses.com/private-duty-nursing/private-duty-nurse-4208-page4.html
  19. What does APDNPP stand for?
  20. Hi Jaki95, This is such an innovative idea yet nurses have been doing it for years, and I'm amazed that very few nurses know about becoming independent private duty nurses (PDN) or independent nurse contractors rather than succumbing to agencies that take 50% of their income. For nurses in other states, there must be a fundamental process to becoming an independent private duty nurse. What I've come to understand is first you obtain a tax ID # (http://www.irs.gov/businesses/small/international/article/0,,id=96696,00.html). Second, you obtain nursing malpractice insurance (e.g., nso.com). Third, you obtain your NPI# at the cms web site.(https://www.cms.gov/NationalProvIdentStand/01_Overview.asp#TopOfPage). Fourth, you obtain your Medicare provider #. (http://www.cms.gov/MedicareProviderSupEnroll/). I noticed nurses discuss a Medicaid provider #. Is that the same thing as the Medicare provider #? If there is a Medicaid provider #, what web site do I apply for it? After the fourth step, its unknown territory. Am I leaving any steps out?
  21. I can't say enough of how this thread has guided me into the independent private duty nursing: https://allnurses.com/private-duty-nursing/private-duty-nurse-4208-page4.html It will answer a lot of your questions!
  22. I have been looking for information on how to become an independent private duty nurse as a sole proprietor (by myself), but could not find any resource or anyone to assist me. I was not looking to hire anyone or start a company (agency), which is what so many resources focused on. I reviewed the messages in 'Entrepreneurs in Nursing,' but they were focused on start-up companies like agencies, businesses, and schools that employed others. From what I read here, agencies seem to be part of the problem (which take about 50% of the nurses' income), not the solution. NNBA was as close as I got to some assistance, however, they didn't focus specifically on independent private duty nurses as sole proprietors (RN self-employment). Mericle Nursing focused on how to get hired as independent nurse contractors at hospitals, but didn't explain how to be an independent private duty nurse. I googled 'Private duty nurses association,' and came up with NPDA, but all the chapters are governed by agencies. PDHCA's advisory board lists individuals who run agencies. I considered giving up, but thought to check allnurses one more time. Then, I discovered this thread and all of you who have been so willing to help us become independent private duty nurses. Maybe we can collaborate and create a book that explains this process step-by-step to help others.
  23. I learned so much information about independent private duty nursing as a sole proprietor from this thread. Hope it helps you! https://allnurses.com/private-duty-nursing/private-duty-nurse-4208-page4.html
  24. This thread has been the most informative and eye-opening on how to get started as an independent private duty nurse who is a sole proprietor! I learned so much from all of you! Thank you for sharing this valuable information to nurses interested in becoming independent private duty nurses!
