I am a ASN, now enrolled in a BSN program, and my local hospital (magnet hospital) will only hire BSN nurses. I think its a good idea to have the BSN just to know I have better opportunities in my career.

I agree! And thats awesome you may have options! I was offered a job at a rehab facility, then got the offer for school nurse, so I ended up taking the school position, I have always wanted to work with kids..peds, or in the community. I also have ADN and had trouble landing hospital jobs. Also the hours for a new nurse would usually be nights or evenings..which I wouldnt mind so much..but my family kinda makes it harder. I would totally take the school job, you can make a difference, and make a good living while doing it. The whole reason nursing is so great is u really do make a difference in peoples lives. I totally agree with the above poster! I loved pediatrics, but am having trouble getting an acute care position with my "ASN".. I am taking a school nurse job, who knows I may love it, the hours are nice also.. and also am starting school again..to get my BSN. I guess I will see what God has planned for me! I am just happy to get out of long term care..

Congrats on your new job! I also am starting a new nurse position at a middle school grades 6-8..I am a new grad and knew I wanted to work with kids in some way.. so school nursing will be perfect! I also feel blessed to have a daytime schedule that will work great with my family life as well. I am so excited to get started! I have also purchased the school nurse text from amazon and can't wait to start reading it! I also plan to join NASN..and when I complete my BSN (Im currently enrolled in classes), I want to become "certified school nurse". I just know I want to do a good job for the kids, my district and myself! I came from a unstable background as a kid myself and know the importance of schools in a child's life. Even when they may not know it..yet. Our school has a high population of Hispanics and also kids from low economic families(which I can relate too!) I hope I don't have many issues with language barriers! There is I'm sure staff who could translate as well though.

I also have always wanted peds nursing..I am hoping for an interview for a school nurse job PT, I am going back to school to get my BSN this Oct, so it would be perfect! I hope I dont have to go back to the nursing home to work. I am figuring that what I want is some type of community nursing, that includes children, that would be great I think for me!

I have an interview with a school later this week for school nurse, I am in Indiana and my county you need to be atleast an RN to be a school nurse. I am so excited and hoping to get it! I have no previous experience so feel glad to have the opportunity for this job. Its even part time but I know I would love working with kids..It was my goal while in nursing school!

I just accepted a job offer for maternity services, (mother/baby,L&D, NICU-after 6 mo)..and I have always worked days. Now Ill be working 11p-11a and wondered if theres any night nurses that can offer advice on how to get thru those first weeks/ months of transition! Excited about the position, nervous a lil about the hours... I have a husband, 18, 10 and 8 y.o. boys. I thought about going to walmart at like 2 am a couple nights b4 just to try and be awake during those night hrs!! Any thoughts are appreciated!

I should add tho tht its 11p-11a..hope I can handle the hrs! # days a week so I think Ill figure it out...eventually!

I also am a Dec 2011 grad, (Indiana) and I have had 2 interviews at hospitals. Both for night shifts, but one I am very hopeful for..maternity services. I would love to do NICU. I also loved peds. The other seems to have an awesome nurse manager and team, it is a med surg floor..good hospital. However I still havnt heard from the hosp jobs, so I accepted a job at the nursing home starting monday! If the hospital calls tho, I will have a big decision to make. btw, nrsg home is FT, days. I needed to start working, plus dont know if I will get the acute jobs or not! Congrats on your new job!!

I agree, I mean it is similar to the one "Why did you apply here?" I kind of want to say.."because you were hiring and I need a job!" or.."Because I want to get my foot in the door, anyway I can.." Most new grads are putting multiple apps in, of course. I would just be honest, then follow up with why you'd like to work for THEM. What you are looking for out of that position. Mind u, I have had 4 interviews, 2 hospitals, 2 LTC facilities. One LTC is where I have worked for 5 yrs now as a CNA..so Im taking that, for now. But if a good position calls me that I cant pass up..I will have to kindly explain it to my LTC employer! It is days too which is a plus since thats all I've ever worked. I have to do mother/baby for 6 months, then move to L&D. But I am excited to be getting interviews! I will add that I live in Indiana..the pay is about 20-22 an hr, some say not much, but for me..a previous CNA.. its great. Cant wait to start working!

That is what I thought but wasnt sure because med surg offered variety and more IVs, drips, procedures.. I would prefer maternity I think anyway. Thanks for the advice! Still waiting to see what they decide tho.

I really want to get into peds nursing in the future. Now would be great however I applied and didnt get any interviews. There isnt a childrens hospital in my area. THere is one w a childrens "floor" but peds is hard to get into, thats what I hear anyway. So, I am just trying to take the position that would benefit my future goal of becoming a peds nurse. Which do u all think is better? I have both options, hopefully.. I will see, but the interviews seemed to go well. so I want to be prepared which I will choose, if able to! Thanks for your opinions!! I feel your pain..getting right into NICU would be exceptional, atleast in my area. I fell in love with pediatrics, however there are no close childrens hospitals in my area. There are 2 hospitals about 45 mins away that have a great peds floor, but of course they are hard to get into. I have an interview this Friday at one, but it is med surg and major surgery, 3rd shift. I guess I could take one of those if offered just to get my foot in the door! I also interviewed for maternity services, 11p-11a in a closer hospital, but with a not as great of a peds floor. I say we should follow our true dreams, however long they may take..:heartbeat I dont want to get "stuck" in LTC, but I could easily get that job which would be easier..but I think it will kill my chances for a hospital job!!

Thanks for the ideas.. today I was called and asked if I want to work at MY nursing home, the one Ive been at for over 4 yrs. FT, just a diff unit. So I have an interview with them Monday! I am going to call the other LTC place and tell them no thank you tommarow. I will take my previous employers job if I end up in LTC!! Then if the hospital actually offers me the job, I'll have to tell them if I change my mind...

I am having the same problem. I was offered a job in LTC, a nice facility..but I had an interview at the hospital..I would prefer the hospital, but do need a job! Also the hospital is nights LTC is day shift. Im going to accept the LTC job to get started on paperwork etc, but I think if the hospital calls I will have to take it. I didnt think I would even have this problem. I was applying almost everywhere. I graduated Dec 2011. I applied and interviewed at a LTC facility. I then had an interview at a local hospital for maternity and Intermediate care. LTC job is first shift, every other weekend. hospital is 3 12 hrs, 7p-7a and 11p-1130a. Wont hear back till end of next week most likely. However the LTC wants to know by this Fri! Soooo...do I wait to see if I get an offer from the hospital, or take the guarenteed job. Btw, I now have another interview for a hospital that is about 45 mins away, for med surg..day and night shifts available. I know its a good problem kind of, but I hope I dont regret if I pass on the LTC then dont get an offer! I dont mind LTC, I worked in it for 5 yrs as a CNA..but want new experiences as a RN. Any thoughts??? Thanks!

I agree with the above poster, also what do u mean by "customer service". That sounds a little weird to me, they are patients arn't they? Or are you not applying for a nurse position? I dont think I would do the smiley, just say how u appreciated her time, etc. Just my opinion though! Good Luck on getting the job!!

Thank you! Yes I just printed the info from the website that shows my license number and the dates. Im sure it will be fine. I can't wait for this interview, I really want to get started working, its maternity which I think will be a good start! My dream job is in peds.. but I do think I will enjoy maternity also.

I have an interview coming and I have been told that my state, Indiana doesnt send you a copy of your license. It is on the website, so I printed a couple copies of that. Do you think this is acceptable for the interview? (Thet requested a copy of it and my CPR card) Im assuming they maybe are not aware of this change..it is fairly new that this is how it is done.

Yes, I actually think I called 4 times and left 3 messages..and I was worried about leaving too many also. I did talk to her and she sent me an email that I needed to send in my "availability", then they would schedule the interview. So it is scheduled for May 1st. :yelclap:It's a hospital I really want to work in(1 of 2 anyways), so I hope I can pull off the interview and land a job. I have been looking what questions I should expect.. The interview is for maternity floor and intermediate care. My favorite is pediatric nursing so Im not sure which would suit better for my future, but I am not going to be picky! I will just be very happy to be working as a RN in the hospital! I have been in long term care for almost 5 years and want a change. (:

I applied to a local hospital online. I got an updated message on my app that said "call recruiter to schedule an interview". I was so excited and called right away. This was 3 days ago. I have left about 4 messages since and still no call yet. This is my first interview, is this normal?? I wish she'd call SOON!! It is RN position in maternity..my fave was peds but I think I would like maternity also, and atleast my foot is in the door at a hospital! If I would get hired, can't even get the interview scheduled! ugghh....

Trust me you passed!!! I took mmine the 31st, first time, and was pretty surprised when it shut off at 75! I didnt believe it either till i got my quick results, and now I have my license number also!! So TRY and relax.. I am sure it means you passed! Havnt heard anyone who got that pop up, and then failed.. I got that exact same one.. congratulations!!

I checked my results today...PVT worked..I PASSED!! I am so relieved and excited to start the next chapter..start working as a nurse!! woohoo! All those hours at my desk paid off, thank God.. On a more personal note, my dad died a yr before I graduated at age 55 from diabetes and heart related problems(HF)he always said I was his personal nurse..I miss him alot but know he'd be happy for me. Thanks to allnurses, I really loved using this website..
