Where do you folks find these good web sites???? Would love to know!

I adore nursing,love to assess my pt find something and report to MD,then treat it,I love to rub backs,I love it when the pt tells me I am the best,I love to look at my pt's at the end of the day and see that I did make a difference even if it is a very small difference. I am not the management type,but boy,I do love to care for others!!!!!

RELAX you are so stressed you are forgetting things...you will notice that you will forget much less as you become more relaxed,your check box idea is a good one.Good luck.

Daytonight....I respect your thoughts,but I feel you are more than just alittle harsh...this new nurse is very remorseful,very worried about the pts well being...something happened that is not all that clear, no one knows {not even her} what she was thinking as she witnessed the other pt's seizure. Almeds N/M did the right thing...Almed is on her way to being a great nurse.....GOOD FOR YOU ALMED!:balloons:

Almed,Please stop beating yourself up,you need to gather your thoughts,go to your manager and admit to your error,poor judgment is not a sin,but,you need to report the error,I hope the pt did not suffer any residual effects,as I am sure you do too,more than anyone.We have all had moments of terror and this is yours.It does sound like you may be alittle depressed,your self confidence is in the basement now I'm sure..how is your relationship with the other nurses,did you feel you could not seek them out for assistance? Where I work their would be no punishment,teaching yes,but no punishment, please talk with your nurse manager,make an appointment to see her/him on a day off. I think this will make you an even better nurse,kinder to the new grads and any fellow nurse that makes a mistake...You will NEVER do anything like this again. Deb Good for you! I think with all your life experience's and your mature nature would make you a valuable employee,I would not hesitate at all.I would suggest that you work as an CNA just to get the feel of the hospital. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

We have primary care where we work....but it does sound alot like team nursing,RN usually have 3-4 pt's and oversee the 3-4 pt's assigned to LPN..they do own assessments,charting,they always mention that the RN collaborated in the care. Rn calls docs,signs orders off,iv meds...all new adm.are assessed by RN. CNA usually 1 to 3 on day shift,do 6 baths/per cna,vs,I/Os and answer call lights...now,haveing said that,some of cnas are the salt of the earth,some are not going to do anymore than they have to.I would rather have 0 cnas and more RN's Their are days{many} that we start with 3 pt's and end with 5...........plus all the LPN pt's...

Yes Steve I did see and hear it.....they could have helped him themselves...could have called for an CNA....I can tell you that I did see one of our MD's empty a bedpan once.......I was speechless....but after I worked with him more I realised he is a very kind man...he knows how busy we are,cares alot about his pt's and the nurses.

I have to agree with the moderator on this one,OP sounds alittle judgemental,maybe the pt wants to "get away".

I would not want to make a meal for a visitor either BUT service with a smile is the name of the game,doesn't your dietary dept. send late or extra trays for pt's? We have a coffe machine at the very end of the hall that gives free coeffe to all that want it....still get pop and jucie water ect. from our gally for pt's.I am glad we only had to post a sign that reminded visitors and pt's that the gally was "staff only" and to ask.

I agree with meown,It is easier to flush before and after each time,and I also give every Iv push med,slowly-3-5min ea.unless otherwise stated. Longer is better and safer!

I you want to be a nurse anyway,why don't you get your CNA first and work hands on, with the pt's. That would give you a good foundation to start from. Ward clerks are wonderful too.:balloons:

Hopalong...........do we have to confront at the nurses station,or anywhere for that matter,why can't the NM do their jobs and get rid of these bullies???? Any NM out their that would like to comment...Has anyone ever been fired for being mean and nasty to co workers,students,for years and years Most of the long term nurses are wonderful but there is always that group that loves to hate...I had one new nurse tell me she has incountered others elseware just not so many in one spot! I want to care for my pt's not fight with a co-worker.:angryfire

OK here it goes,4 pt;s to start,sent one 40yr.home-lots of teaching done, then,350 lb, mr, nice, cell. bilat. legs,takes two to transfer,never had help,called MD for PT order,which I got,PT eval. her,thinks nursing can ambulate,they won't do {nothing new here} sent another back to the rest home,bath done {by me} first,Parkinsons, very diaphoretic,found awful groin/rectal area,takes time and one other to hold legs apart to clean.had to explain to Nursing Home.never had the pt before! New surg. comes in from PACU,no report from last floor that sent him to OR with a nasty belly,had 3 jps,abcess drainage bag, central line with TPN and lipids,Dem.PCA which was not hooked up,HR was 90 to 160 bpm,called Dr. numerous times.etc.etc. Try and answer others lights,trying to improve our care and service,Disney ya know. Ran by the desk and saw a CNA reading the paper,didn't have time to kill myself. Actually it was a fairly good day,got out about 45min. late. Not to bad. Sorry about the 50 word thing.

Lizz I had a situation something like that when I worked in a Skilled facility,the pt was a dear,the daughter was A NIGHTMARE! absolutely NUTS! i COULD GIVE YOU SOME EXAMPLES BUT YOU WOULD NEVER BELIEVE ME! The CEO finally decieded that we were just not able to meet their needs and assisted them in finding another facility. The sweet lady died a few mo. later. I was sorry to hear she passed away,but boy was I glad it wasn't in our facility. We cared for this pt for almost a year.:chair:

Here it is a year + later,I have been following your lead and it does work,when your busy being a good nurse you don't usually hear the "bad stuff". I would like to hear from some management folks,still need to know why you allow it,surely you have lost some good nurses over things like this. Miphillli

Thank-you,I have looked for this book and can't find it. Do you remember the author? I know pt. service is of the most impotant...but don't they also look at the "crabby" staff,those that may be good nurses but are awful to work with,they are the one's that never like anything that management wants to try,change is not in their vocabulary,they have been at the hospital for 30 yrs. and like the way it "has always been".....I could go on,but this is suppose to be a short reply. Ha!. Thanks for any input you can give me.

I wear my pin every day,attached to my name tag.It was a new program,our class was #1 so we got to pick the colors,pin design the whole shbang,it is a very nice pin and I am very proud to have earned it.
