New name for nurses who are men
When people say to me "so youre becoming a male nurse" I say "well I applied to be a female nurse, im keeping my fingers crossed".

Nurse: 'I was fired for refusing flu shot'
The logic is risk factor. Without vaccine you are more likely to contract and spread the flu where you will be sick for a week plus. Can anyone say for certain that you won't pass it on to your patients for sure? No! But simply put there's a greater risk if you're not vaccinated than if you are. Based on your philosophy why shouldn't people smoke I mean people who never smoked a day in their life still contracted lung cancer. Again the idea is risk factor and if you can't wrap your head around that logic than thinking logically isn't for you.

Nurse: 'I was fired for refusing flu shot'
The way I see it hospitals and schools make sure youve had your vaccines and sometimes you have to get a tetorifice booster or some other shots. If thats what they require just do it and keep your mouth shut. Barring allergies I dont see any reason why someone shouldnt get the vaccine other than its a self empowerment issue by saying "you cant tell me what to do". If you dont like the rules just quit believe me the hospital doesnt need you as much as you need them. Put the ego aside and do as requested otherwise be ready to face the consequences. Bottom line is its about the patients and whether the hospital is doing it for the patients safety or to cover themselves from getting sued a rule is a rule and theres no two sides to it. If you have a hard time accepting the fact that your patients health is more important than your personal feeling on an issue youre in the wrong profession. And no you cant sue because you wont win. The hospital is not forcing you to get a shot in the sense that they are strapping you to a chair and sticking you with a needle. They make it part of the requirements of employment and if you dont want to listen you will get fired. Just like they can tell you that you cant take care of your patients in a bikini they can tell you that you cant take care of them without the flu shot.

Well it is alot of work and depending on how many classes you are taking, work, family and school or extracurricular activities you just might find that free time is hard to find. Not trying to scare anyone just stating the truth.

Looking for nursing programs in NYC area. Beth Israel? City Tech? etc... HELP!
Beth Israel requires the usual pre reqs. A&p 1 & 2, micro, general psych, developmental psych, writing, nutrition, sociology. All of which are given by the school through pace university. You can klep out of some of these and if you took some of these previously they may transfer over. Good luck.

Interview Questions
Well there's always the main one- why do want to be a nurse? Basically they want to see what kind of person you are and what kind of personality you have to see if you have the potential to be a nurse. Good luck.

Nursing school now first come first serve?
Does this mean the first 40 will be accepted or just considered and once they go through those 40 if only 15 fit the bill they look at another 40?

Do experienced students (cna, emt) do better in nursing programs than non-exp???
Depending on the personality of the students having prior experience may be a disadvantage to them. Many instructors are very particular about doing things their way and some know it all students like to relay how they were previously taught to do something. Professors hate this. Plus if the experienced student does something based on the way he/she is used to and it differs even slightly from the way you were taught now it can affect their grade. So in a way you have an advantage in the sense that youre learning it for the first time from the person who will be grading you and you have no conflicting knowledge on the subject. Good luck!

Facebook almost cost me my job
Thats right tell that to the people whos irresponsible child was cyberbullied and to the irresponsible girl who was coerced by a pervert to "meet". But lets not blame facebook I mean people can connect with friends and family all over the world because of it, it's not like we have phones or email or anything that can do the same thing without broadcasting your life to the world. BTW for all those who care I had an omlette for lunch. I guess your right facebook is like drinking and smoking, its a useless possibly harmful addiction.

Facebook almost cost me my job
Wrong! They didn't say you cant post on facebook they just hold you responsible for what you say, two very different things. Whether or not what someone says warrents firing is irrelevant because once its out and HR forms an opinion on what was said they will look at people who made these comments when downsizing needs to be done or will simply find another reason to fire you. Stop being so busy with the the first amendment and remember the fifth amendment. You dont have to say everything that comes to mind. If you have things that bother you and you want to get them off your mind go to a therapist not facebook.

Facebook almost cost me my job
Facebook has caused more problems than its worth. It like other means of social networking has dumbed down society and got people fired, caused them not to be hired and has brought people to commit suicide, additionally who knows whos behind the profile. I admit I used to use facebook but then I matured and realized that its a big waste of time. If people are that interested in knowing what I had for lunch then they can call and ask me.

Taken advantage of...
I took a nutrition class this past semester and we had a small report to do (by small I mean the prof. said she wanted it to be under 2 pages). I did my report in good time, no problem. A fellow student who Im friendly with asked me to see my report cause he wanted to see how I approached it. I told him no problem but made sure to tell him not to copy my work and he agreed. Anyway 2 weeks later, the day of the final, he calls me and tells me that he spoke to the prof. and he told her that we did the report together and thats why they look so similar. I was appalled and felt extremely betrayed. But what bothered me the most was that by saying that to the prof. before she asked about it just tells me that he probably copied my work word for word. thank god it didnt affect my grade. I'm a person with trust issues. Iv'e been burned and have close friends and family who have been burned in different ways and this experience just tells me that my trust issues are justified. I know alot of people are honest but I feel like putting up a wall around myself in order not be taken advantage of. Am I being irrational?

Issue with nursing classmate
Looks like youre the victim of a user. There are always people out there looking for the easy way to do everything which usually means not doing anything and just look for a handout or piggyback on someone elses work. I had a similar situation (though not regarding schoolwork) where a fellow student kept asking me to get him a coffee when I come to school. Now I dont drink coffee and theres a starbuck literally 2 doors down from our school. When this person texted me 2 hours before I even left for school I knew he was just being lazy. So I just told him straight out "I'm not your gopher, stop asking me to get you coffee and thats where that ended". You just have to confront these people cause hinting or being passive agressive is usually lost on them. I say you tell her how you feel and break off any agreement you had. You dont need the added stress of someone bugging you to do work for them.

A&P Lab ?
oh I loved the dissections we dissected a brain, eye, heart and cat; very cool and interesting. One thing to prepare for these things stink pretty bad and dont wear clothing you care about because some parts can squirt. One poor guy in our lab got sprayed in the face from the cat. Good luck

Biology Prerequisites
Whatever you decide you need to take anatomy before physiology. As my prof. always like to point out a&p is all about structure-function. If you dont know the structure (anatomy), the function (physiology) will be very hard.
-
I have a nursing textbook and I'm not afraid to chuck it at you!
Flunking bio twice? Really? Dont get me wrong bio can be difficult but its not rocket surgery. I say you should convince them to go to medical school and once they do we'll start a pool on how long they will last. My bet is not past bio.

Stop! I don't want someone like you touching me!
Hey I was wondering if anyone has ever been in a situation in which a patient did not want to be treated by you because of your race, religion, culture, etc. and how you handled it. This hasn't happened to me but it has happened to a friend of mine who's an EMT and I figured this can happen to nurses as well.
