  1. How long is a long time? If it's great in your eyes, why don't people want to work there for a ‘long time'? Ask not yourself, but the nursing staff. I refuse to stay working at a place with constant short staffing. The workplace can start there at least. I also find it important that admin. have at least some nursing background so as to understand the importance of staffing & other nursing issues.
  2. You should work before and during nursing school. I'm in school now, and work as an Lpn just on weekends. For the experience, pay my bills etc......but if you're a CNA, and becoming a new nurse, you want somewhere to be before you graduate. This puts you 1 step ahead of the rest of the graduates.
  3. The guilt trip doesn't work for me any more. When it's anyone in nursing I turn it around and ask them what theyre doing at that time cuz most of the time, they don't work the floor much. They need to learn...
  4. This is the perfect example of why the mandatory every other weekend schedule and every other holiday works (then the holidays rotate each year so that makes it fair) question: why would somebody who's been there longer than you not get the option to take their weekends off? On the other hand, it's borderline harassment to be calling somebody like that in my opinion. When I'm on the other side, I call once and leave a message just to say I did call, but understand why somebody would say no. If if someone wants to switch shifts. It doesn't hurt to ask but the shouldn't get mad when its a no either. If somebody else asks me why I'm not coming in, it's disrespectful. Everybody has a life (or several...) to take care of outside of work and it's not their business to know what I do in my personal time.
  5. I must say that when it comes to smoking, it's really annoying. If a smoker can have 12 smoke breaks a shift, then so should I... to run to Burger King for fresh fries;). And so if we were all smokers, how much work would get done? This occurs frequently and is not fair to the residents/clients/patients or the rest of the team.
  6. In the past I've found it a bit draining, on top of my regular list of things to do in a shift. I'm naturally an introvert, but work has opened me up for the better of the team. But I feel like I must greet patients and their families at least. This doesn't mean having a half hour conversation without them. They know I'm always busy, and they appreciate when I take the 0.05 seconds out just to say 'Hi, how are ya?'. In my opinion for even an introverted person, its not too much to ask for. Put yourself in the other persons shoes. What I won't do though is be fake. Because I feel like patients and their families can sense that. Coworkers can as well, and nobody wants that kind of environment for 8 plus hours. Or to anticipate and dread working w/ certain people... How can you be a member of the team who is unapproachable? Maybe it's because I've worked in that location for 6 years and the coworkers, pts, and family know eachother very well.
  7. First off, it is basic math. Im terrible at taking tests AND I'm not so hot in math. But I do the calculations just fine when I'm on the floor. It's about the pressure. Some people are just bad test takers. Secondly, LIFE happens. You really dont know what could have been going on in that persons life. Or maybe what they told you is not even half of it. Everybody's struggle is different in life. (financial, health, family, language etc.) Things don't come easily for everyone just because it's 'simple math' or simple anything to you. Though...I do believe that if you know you're not ready for nursing school 100%, then don't continue. It's a waste of your time and others time. I'm glad that nursing school sounds like a breeze to you.
  8. 12 or 16 hours on the weekends better. You want that time after school to study and do homework.
  9. Did you go to this campus? or are you still attending? How is the faculty?
  10. I def. Would have said something. I'm a quiet one but I wait my turn to speak (when one of the big people pulls me to the side). My administration hated me for this reason.
  11. Right now, I cant wait until the Real Housewives of New Jersey comes back.
  12. I last bought an MDF and it works just as great as my Littman. plus the colors are stylish... mine is all black everything.
  13. Bring an extra pair of comfortable shoes. Sleep at least 5 hrs before work. Bring coffee.... I like the Starbucks frapp in the glass bottle. Some people say Mountain Dew is really good.... if you drink soda.
  14. Is there really a way that youre going to show up at a school, jump all these students on the list who have worked hard, to get the prereqs done, scored high on the entry exams etc. and qualify for the program (just like you did ofcourse), and expect to not wait? Please let me know which school that is. If you also qualify for the program, I'd think you'd be told to take your spot on the litst. Let me know which school that is... I will even move there.
