I would not encourage anyone to be a nurse!
I would encourage my child to be a nurse if he or she wanted to. It is how you look at it. First off I do not let nursing spill into my personal life. When I come home that is it I have other things to keep my thoughts positive. I am a traveler nurse and agency not strapped down to staff nursing because of the many problems that are occuring! I enjoy taking care of my babies and teaching first time parents. True the political crap can be overwhelming and we will continue to fight for what we deserve! I take control of what I want to do. Nursing has came along way and it has a long way to go still. It is not nursing that is bad it is the powers that be who claim they have vision of what nursing should be, non nurses!

Poll: What do you love about the NICU?
I love the fact I can hold them and cuddle them when their situation is less than perfect and bond with parents as their little progresses onward. NICU is the best! I just love those babies. They are so resilient and strong despite their fragile appearance.

Is it true that a BSN will be mandatory soon?
SO WELL PUT! MY POINT EXACTLY.

Is it true that a BSN will be mandatory soon?
I really do not think having a BSN will make a nurse better! I have no qualms seeking higher education but forcing someone to have BSN to practice defeats the purpose. If it would significantly raise the their salary I could see it as an incentive but unfortunately it does not. If one does accquire a BSN it is a personal endeavor that nursing employers don't appreciate. I have a BSN and I really don't see the difference in my fellow co-workers who only have an associate degree we both can function in the same capacity. If I choose to be in a managerial role that would be the only difference I could see and even that wouldn't matter because some people with graduate degrees make lousy leaders.

Negative Work Environment, HELP!
Hi there, I am sorry you are having a hard time. I truly understand what you are going through. I applied at one hospital and their nicu was very nice, state of art equipment but the staff was very anal and cold. In three months I resigned. I refuse to work in a unhealthy cold unit. You are a RN you can find other jobs. You must do what makes you happy. We have stresses in our lives the last thing you need is to work in a place where misery is king. GET OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

So you wanna visit North Carolina .....
Hi there all. I am currently residing in Rancho Cucamonga California. If you did not know housing out here is rough the average home in nearly 400k. I decided that it is time to move back to the south. I remember living in N. Carolina when I was stationed at Ft Bragg and loved it. I am a RN with 5+ experience in NICU. What is the average rate for RNs? Money is not an issue I am just curious. I would love to buy a home and live the quiet life if anyone has any tips or ideas pls share. :)

pay
I realized that in the long run hospitals do come out more using registry. It is all about the $$$$$$. What I don't understand is the hostility among staff nurses vs. registry. Dont hate player hate the game.

Addendum to BEWARE!
I am looking into traveling and I have to tell you some of the recruiters are idiots. I was inquiring about a travel assignment in Los Vegas and when she told me the rate I laughed! She kept telling me that it is not like California which is true but I was quoted a higer rate in Cincinnati plus getting transportation to and from work. I think it depends on how much these recruiters want you to work. I am starting to think that travel nursing is overrated it is not all peachy you really have to find a good agency to work with.

Just got canned!!!
Don't even stress. See like always cut their noses off to spite their face. Losing good nurses left and right. That is why I will never work full time no where I like doing registry and an occasional contract. The b/s of most hospitals and what is so bad most nurses stay and put up with it.

Pregnant and Nursing School??
If you are determined you will succeed. My best friend was pregnant and she graduated with no problems. Just as long as it doesn't pose risk to your future bundle of joy I can't see why not you could not finish. I wish you well. :balloons:

California, and travel nursing and pay...
I had a friend who did a strike not in Califonia and she cleared around 4k a week so that is not unheard of during a strike. But just for regular traveling, I don't think so! Although currently w/me I am working a 6 week contract for 43$ and hour and I am not complaining!

Is 30 Unit RN a good way to go????
Once you do 30 unit that is it. You cannot go anywhere else and even if you get a degree you can't apply to that! If you don't plan on going anywhere and California is where you are going to stay go for it. But it is limiting.

MLK in LA
That is the raggedy administrators. Because that is one place if I were to get shot send me there. There are some damn good surgeons that have came out of that place. The nurses are the bomb! Sad situation. Some one just needs to clean house.

$$23.8/hr...is this a fair rate for an RN in L.A?
Are you a new grad? That is low. LA cost of living is very high. What facility are you working in?

Need advice...what would you do next?
Bad bird you are so right. I am learning now. Never agree to anything until you see it in writing. I took a local travel assignment to a hospital that is known to float on different floors in one shift. Well 1. They had one person do the scheduling for the entire hospital even w/countless times I put in my requests for days off days that I had to be at my other job she consistently scheduled me on those days. 2. Float policy- I was told ahead of time I was not floating but as soon as the census get low they were attempting to cancel us and floating which is not in my contract to do so! Then in the middle of my contract I was told I had to float! Then the straw that did it for me was when the staffer lied and said I was a no call no show on the schedule when my schedule says otherwise. I discussed this with my agency and because of that my contract was terminated! Which was fine but it seems that my agency was not supportive of what happended. The staffer says she spoked to me personally which was an out right lie! The bottom line was that I refuse to play their games and wouldn't back down and they saw an opportunity and took it. I am glad it was a local contract I would have been up a creek w//o paddle if it were out of state. I have learned my lesson. 1. Go by your first instinct if you aren't feeling a facility don't go there. 2. READ the contract thoroughly because most of these agencies are only out to make a buck not caring about your welfare. whew!111

How common are negative outcomes in NICU?
I really thinks it depends where you work and the general population. I work in a small unit and a medium size and for the most part I don't see too many bad outcomes. When it does it is very tragic and we as nurses try to deal with it. I know there are periods when we get nothing but twins, large babies and a influx of 26weekers. There are bad outcomes in every area of nursing some more frequent than others I suppose. It shouldn't deterr (sp) you from this area. I love the fact that many of these babies do grow and go home. Some come back and look great!

Giving IV meds
It really depends I work at various NICU units and it is pretty standard. Most I will agree that we prime the tubing with the med and run it over at least 30 minutes unless its Vancomycin which is about an hour! The pharmacy puts extra med in the syringe for that purpose. If the tubing is more than the med we simply put NS behind the med and run it that way. And if you are truly blessed on facility I work in the meds come up primed and ready to run just double check the dosage with another nurse. :-)

Cardiac Cath Lab nursing
Hello, I am a RN who currently works in NICU and I have been pretty interested in Cardiac Cath lab how does one get into this training? What are the working hours? I am curious I am feeling a need to change and try something different I love nursing as a whole because of the opportunities such as this. Any replies I would greatly appreciated. I reside in California in the Inland Empire. :-) Thanks :-):balloons:

scrubs....
I still believe the most effective way to curtail some infections is basic good ole handwashing. Clothing has nothing to do with it. I have sent parents back to the sink because they insist on not scrubbing their hands up to their elbows for 3 minutes. When I tell them about the potential for infecting their young they listen. I have even seen nurses not washing for at least 15 seconds. I have went through major lotion because I can't stand knowing that I could have potentially cause an infection to a baby because I didn't do a basic hygienic practice!

My baby was a 24 weeker...
No matter what our textbooks tell us about micropreemies it is GOD who has the final say! I have seen 23 6/7 weekers get through I do feel in my heart they are suffering but as a nurse I am compelled to give the best care regardless of what I may feel. When a little one gets throught those milestones I say it is a miracle I only pray that they have minimal effects as they grow and become older.

Are NEW GRADS successful in the NICU?
You will do fine. I did very well. I hate med surg I refuse to do it! I only recommend it if you are ify with your skills but for the most part go for it. I have been doing it for 4 1/2 years and have not looked back.

MA's Calling Themselves Nurses?
I feel like this until MA has endured the work, I went through he/she has no right to put that word in their mouth. Last I checked MD's do not dish out licensure so their word means squat. The bottom line is that everyone wants to take a piece of what nurses do on a daily basis yet doesn't have a clue what nursing really entails. We are the backbone of the healthcare profession and every agency or some crack pot legislation is always trying to justify why unlicensed personnel should be able to do 1/8 of our job when it is not what nursing is all about! Nursing has came a long way and has a ways to go! :angryfire

New grad not wanting to work
I am not mad at you, Tara you do what you have to do for you and your family. You are very fortunate to able to have that choice I say do it! Enjoy the life with your babies I can't speak for other women but if I had the choice I would be home. You may change your mind but at least you have that option. Nursing is not going anywhere just don't let your RN expire keep that current because you never know. :-) Congradulations!!!!!!
