This is a delimna. Day shifts would seem to be a safer choice, although difficult and inconvenient. Childcare costs incurred by working night shifts would be more expensive, and teenaged parties and weird goings on are more likely to occur as a result of the parent's absence at night, despite 'supervision'.

I used to work the night shift in nursing homes through the registry, my patient loads ranged anywhere from 24-114, and I routinely faced staffing problems. The most bizarre experience I had was being the lone licensed nurse, with 114 patients on a Friday night, and the other night nurse didn't call in sick until almost 15 minutes after the shift began. The nurses that I relieved just completed double shifts, and were scheduled for double shifts again, the following morning. The registries had noone available, and no staff ( including the DON, ADON, and administrator) answered their phones. On top of that, only 3 of the 7 aides reported for work and I had THREE CODES (half the residents were full codes) before the shift was half over! If there was ever a shift from hell, that was it. Needless to say, this was my first and last assignment at that facility. That was 10 years ago and sadly, I believe that the staffing problems in LTC are here to stay.

As a cost-saving measure, there were several nurse layoffs (among others) at a nursing home in my area a few months ago. The facility continues to be in operation, and closure is not anticipated.

I don't have a problem with it, and its their own business. If we don't like the idea, we don't have to join.

Investigation, administrative hearing, and punishment- losing her license is one form of punishment. She can also be placed on probation for a period of time with conditions. Either way, it becomes permanent, public record, unless she enters the diversion program- which is another form of punishment, but her information would not become public record if she successfully completes this program. This information applies to RNs, I don't know if its applicable to LVNS.
