It's evidently too hard for others to help out.
I think most of us have been through what you are talking about. The ones that don't know what we are talking about might well be the seat warmers we refer to. I am a traveller now, but when I was working at a hospital, we had a nurse who would sit and read and ignore the monitor and her pts. We actually put her name on the chair she would sit in all the time. She finally did get fired for -- get this-- falling asleep in a pts room while the pt was having a prolonged decel, with family in the room! She was still asleep while we ran in there as did the physicians. Very Very scary. And totally frustrating when you have people that do not preform with the team. We all need to be there for each other it is the only way to survive.

Have anyone else heard of "basic care NURSES"?
Hmmm that sounds suspicious to me -- Maybe the nurses should start teaching classes on Basic physician training and let the grads call themselves Doctor!! Would that not cause a problem or what??!! :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire How irritating. We work hard for our title and our Licence and for people to call themselves nurses grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. It is bad enough that pts don't know who is the nurse and who is the houskeeper let alone if they are dealing with a real nurse or a basic non nurse.

24 weeks pregnant with rib pain
Those are all very good things then. I would consult your physician and see if she/he has any suggestions. For now you could try a warm compress and tylenol (as long as you are not allergic to Tylenol) to relieve some of the pain. I hope the pain goes away soon. 'sorry I was not of more help.

24 weeks pregnant with rib pain
Congrats! Well I don't know what to tell you. Is there anything that makes it better or worse? Is the baby moving? Any HX of gallbladder? If it is really bothersome I would consult your doctor, like a phone diagnosis it is pretty hard to tell what it could be over the internet. Other things though. Any swelling? Any nausea? Headache, visual disturbances, Increased BP? Vomiting? I had what sounds like the same pain under my right rib almost my entire pregnancy -- the docs could find nothing, but counter pressure on the area helped somewhat, of course I pts thought it was kinda funny the way I walked around putting counter pressure on my ribs all the time )

Anyone using Nitronox in OB?
Never heard of this either, but I am not sure I like the sound of it. Who wants a mom knocked out? That does not sound like a great experience to me. Patient controlled epidural is the best thing I have used.

Specific Travel Company for CALI
Hi I would recommend A&A nursing. They are local to California and are really personable and reliable to work for. I only work for them in California:)

Cudos to A&A Nursing
I just had to write and thank A&A nursing for all their care and concern for my family and myself. I am new to travel and A&A has been there every step of the way. They picked me up from the airport, had a welcome to California BBQ for me, took me to my housing, then picked me up the next day and took me to get my car and cell phone. They have been so supportive, even calling me on the floor during my shift to see how the night was going and delivery coffee and treats when we were having a rough night on the floor. When I had to leave my assignment to come home to deal with a legal matter they were again there driving my family to airport since my flight was at a different time, and have been checking on how things are going every few days. When I was sick in California Autumn brought me crackers gator aid, soup and flowers. I just cannot say enough good things about this company. They support their nurses and are just great people in general, and they have worked in the trenchs with us so they know what we deal with on a daily basis. So I just want to say Thank you A&A:hatparty: :hatparty: :hatparty:

Just got canned!!!
You did the right thing! I am sure they are going to be sorry to have lost a dedicated and knowledgeable RN who knew the ropes in their facility. I just do not understand the concept of bottom line as compared to pt safety, it blows my mind. Good luck with the new registry work -- I know of an awesome registry to work for in California, great pay, great support, I work for them when I am in California. Good luck

Night nurses: Do you have a sign?
Wow I am quite shocked that I never gave it that much tought. I always had a sign on the door Shift Worker Please !!!! Don't even think about it with a very cranky looking disheveled RN for a pic. I guess because I live in an area where people still will leave their doors unlocked I never thought of the danger of the sign. The only time that I did not have the sign on the door was when I was selling my house. Unfortunately there was a lock box and even though the listing clearly stated that agents MUST have my permission to show the property and that I was a shift worker, one agent thought he should show it without calling. Well I happen to sleep ummmm well naked, and it being summer I was not totally covered up when my bedroom door flew open and the light was turned on. Needless to say the couple and the agent made a quick exit and I did not recieve an offer on my house that day. Guess they did not like what they saw heheheheh :rotfl:

Opinions of O'grady Peyton agency
Hi I am just starting my first travel assignment and have found that Jill at Emerald health is great as is the company so far.:)

Why agency pay more?
Which Agency are you with? I am just looking into to travel and I am trying to compare agencies. I am not really finding much information in the way of the good the bad and the ugly.
-
Why agency pay more?
You raise some very interesting issues? I am currently searching for a travel job and all the agencies seem to be promising the moon. How did you go about becoming and independent? How are you covered in regards to liability? Any input would be appreciated.

Very well said

Youngest labor patient?
Again I would like to say that I do not judge my pts. All of pts be they teen moms, prostitues, drug users or Drs wives get the same treatment from me. I try to teach and coach and hope for the best. I think the sad part is that all of you who were teen Mothers are so defensive about it. Alot of you have over come quite an obstacle since you all seem to be in Nursing school or about to graduate- I say Bravo!! What you need to realize is that you are the exception to the rule. Not everyone is able to over come such adversity as having a baby young. Look at the statisics. Greater % of being in low income family for life, greater chance of failure to thrive, greater incidents of more childhood ailments, greater learning disabilities. This is not because of the nurse you had, this is just because as a teenager you are not prepared to be the kind of parent you need to be to nurture your children. I do believe you get looks and snide comments but not from as many nurses as you might think. I work with a wonderful and nurturing bunch of nurses and although there is the odd nurse who does not care to take care of teens or drug abusers ect, I as a charge nurse accomodate that for the sake of the pt and so the pt no matter who they are or why they are on our floor, will get the care they so much deserve during this special time in their lives. Stop walking around with the defensive chip and look what you have achieved despite it.

Nurses who don't take the time to care: have you seen examples?
I agree with most of this thread. We are trained to care for the pts holistically. I know that for the most part I am a caring nurse who goes the extra mile. I get my job done and my pts are well taken care of. Meds on time or before requested, drinks at the bedside with each round, and try and make appts ;with my pts for dressing changes ect. Some days you just can't please everyone and I leave work feeling like I have let people down. The most recent example I found of a fellow worker ignoring the needs of a pt was: A spanish only speaking pt kept ringing the call light and calling her nurse in on night shift. The nurse brought a few things to her but could not understand what she wanted. She sat down in the work room to read and her pt called out again, she stated she was not going back in there until her next set of rounds because she did not know what else the woman could want. I thought how horrible this poor woman does not understand us, we don't understand her and her translator and all her family was gone. I went into the room and took my spanish translation book with me, unfortunately this women could not read spanish either. So I finally called the ATT operator to translate for me -- all the women wanted was to know how often to feed her baby. We took care of the problem and did some more teaching while I had the use of the translator. The women was so very grateful. I cannot imagine how scary it must be for a pt not able to communicate their needs to us. I was appalled by the lack of respect my colleague had shown this women, just because she was too tired to deal with it. I know we all have bad days, but it should not be taken out on the pt. This nurse only had 3 couplets that were 2nd day post partums, so not a huge assignment. BTW the pt never rang the call bell again that night

Canadian nursers leaving to work in the USA.
Hi I worked in Canada from 1996-2001 and my student loans are paid. I left to work in a specialty area and to make more money. I got 12 weeks paid training and continued education, the ratios are better, I was even given benefits even for a part-time position. You can't get that in Ontario - not to mention they actually have full time position with fully paid benefits including orthodontics and a employer funded 401K. Canada needs to wake up and smell the Tim Hortons!

You know you're canadian when...
Whooo HOO rolllllllllllllllllllllll Up the Riiiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmmmmm! This is a great thread. I work in Michigan and live in Canada. I am always getting caught for my "accent" for say out or about. Or how I say what a BP is. You know you are really Canadian when you know who the Bare Naked Ladies are and get their Lyrics and if you know who Great Big Sea is and are not afraid to listen to the lyrics and JIG. Thanks for the laugh:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

i think i failed the nclex
Hey a deep breath and relax. I know its hard but you more then likely passed. I wrote three years ago and it shut down before I even made it to the first mandatory break I freaked! The person at the office came out and handed me kleenex and assured me I probably passed because it shut down early. Well she was correct, I passed and Iam sure you did too! Let us all know when you find out

Federalize Nursing Licenses! Who's with me?
Sounds like a great idea to me. With all the technology we should be able to be in one data bank. Easier way to keep track of "problem nurses" too. And what the heck is up with Homeland Security and their Visa screen???? I have been credentialed through Michigan and taken the Neclex with Michigan and now I am being asked to prove my schooling in ontario was up to standard? Did they not already do that before I was granted permission to sit for Michigan Boards. Geeeshhh why make it so hard for people when there is such a nursing shortage?:angryfire

Youngest labor patient?
I think perhaps you missed the point of what I wrote. I said that even though I have my own opinion I DO NOT let it show in how I treat my patients They have made a choice and now they are living with it. I think that it is so very unrealistic though to say that pregnancy is not romanticized. It is I see it everyday, things will be so wonderful, my baby will be so perfect ect.... It is a tough world out there and good for you for making something of yourself. It is tough raising kids and going to school and working. I know, I left my husband who was abusive and went back to nursing school with a one year old and a two year old in tow. I applaud the fact that you are doing something with your life. Just don't be so unrealistic about what others are doing in this world. Some of these moms are in fact abused and it is a horrible horrible thing, but some some exactly what they wanted someone to love, and now they have it whether the Dad is around or not. Good luck with your studies!
