Gen. Psych in Summer, too hard?
If I had a choice I would take it during the summer just to get it over with. Meeting 4 nights a week, I seriously doubt you will have to read several chapters a night because 6 weeks is enough t2o spread it out a bit. I'm taking an 8-week developmental psych online and a 5-week micro course this summer, while working full-time AND moving to a new apartment. So I know where you're coming from here. Just study a bit each night to prepare for the exams, prioritize things and you will do fine. Best of luck. ~Nikonos

What do nursing schools want to see?
My school looked at two things: a) GPA in only those classes listed as pre-reqs for the nursing program and b)the score on either the NLN or ACT. We had several EMT's and even more LPN's in the applicant pool that were not accepted due to their low GPA's in pre-nursing science courses. You may be able to boost your GPA before you get accepted. I have a biology degree and the human A/P and medical microbiology required for the nursing program I did not take for my BS so taking those boosted my overall average enough to be competitive in the admisions process. Good luck.

Accepted to Bellarmine...but...
I went to UofL for three years so I cannot speak of Bellarmine's program. But there are two people in my nursing class who were accepted into Bellarmine's program and ended up enrolling at a state school due to the high cost of enrollment. I'm in the Louisville area as well but I could not justify spending that kind of tuition for a degree that I could get for a small fraction of the price. Good luck.

What's nursing school like?
It will be one of the more challenging experiences that you will ever have, and yet the most rewarding at the end of the day when you realize that you have conquered something that many of your peers are having a great deal of trouble with. I studied three years for a BS in biology (zoology) and my first semester of nursing school is by far the most demanding of any other college course. I spend 8-10 hours a day/5 days a week on campus and then a good number of hours after that reviewing matierial for the next days lecture, but I am also taking AP2 over along with NSG101 which I do not recommend. Professionalism is of utmost importance as a male in the nursing community but if you use it, and common sense, clinicals will be no big deal. We have about 30 pages of paperwork due the day after every clinical experience and a test every week. The biggest advice I could give...study as much is as humanly possible, and no procrastination-that stuff doesn't fly. Good Luck.

The Spring '05 Anatomy & Physiology Club: A&P 2
We blasted through the endrocrine system and genetic in lecture the first two and a half weeks of class. Now we're going over the reproductive system in lecture and finishing up the endocrine system in lab.

Can I still be a nurse with a misdemeanor conviction
It is up to the board of nursing in your particular state as to their granting you liscensure. Each state has different policies as far as felony/misdemeanors and sitting for boards. Good luck.

What Have You Had to Disect
You need to be careful about rinsing all the preservative off of the animal in question, especially if you need to use the specimen all year. Even in the course of only four months, certain groups in my lab started developing mold on their cats because they had poured out the preservative fluid. It may stink, but it is there to prevent the growth of microorganisms. I would hate for you to have to buy another specimen because your's grew mold and bacteria while you were on semester break.

What Have You Had to Disect
In A/P 1: cat fetal pig sheep brain cow eye And in zoology: earthworm grasshopper sea star frog fetal pig dogfish perch lamprey We got to observe the med students at our university dissect cadavers, but we never got to do it ourselves...unfortunately.

Any New Zealand nurses from the US?
I am in an ADN program in the US and am interested in emigrating to NZ in the near future. I have visited all the related sites in the 'sticky' post but many of my questions were left unanswered. Such as, are US ADN-graduate RN's recognized as an RN in NZ or will I need a 4-year degree before I make the move? The immigration system in place in NZ also has me scratching my head on a few things and it would be great to correspond with someone who has made the move and gone thrugh all the procedures first-hand. I would greatly appreciate any advice that you could give me. Thanks. ~Adam

Airforce nursing critical shortage specialties?
I have a question for all of you active/prior service AF nurses. Does the Air Force take new graduates from BSN programs or do they have a minimum requirement for clinical hours prior to signing up?

Male Nursing Students
I'm starting clinical rotations in January for my RN program. I'm 6'2" 185lbs and there are 4 other males in my ADN class of 30. The whole "This is woman's work" mentality is utter BS. If you are a male RN you have so many employment opportunities available to you that your counterparts majoring in other areas may never have. There is a nursing surplus in the state of Kentucky, and yet employment recruiters from the major hospitals have been in contact with me on a steady basis. The best nurses that I have ever associated with were guys and they were extremely professional and seemed very satisfied with their chosen career field. The social stigma is on the way out, but it is not going ot happen overnight. Night shift in the Louisville ED I tech in already has a 60/40 ratio of women to men nurses and I see that gap shortening more and more in the near future.

A & P 2 and Nursing I at the same time, am I that CRAZY?????
Yea, that is a pretty common load at my school. Next semester I will have to take AP2 and my Intro to Nursing class as well. I don't see it as being a problem, just a huge commitment of time and mental resources. Best of wishes to you.

Would you pay for Satellite Radio?
I've had XM for 6 months and have no complaints thus far. Better audio quality, no commercials, better selection of music, consistant reception across every state I have been through.

Disecting Cats
My current AP2 course in my program uses cats for dissection purposes. In the past for my biology degree I've done everything from polychaete worms, frogs, grasshoppers, sea stars, fetal pigs, a skate, yellow perch, dogfish, lamprey and next month will be making the drive to the med school to work with human cadaver dissection in a gross anatomy setting before I go to my own classes. The vast majority of US nursing programs do not use cadavers not because of the cost of the bodies but the extreme cost of the facilities and equipment it takes to house and use them. As immoral and offensive as some may find dissections, it is a time-tested method of learning anatomy. I have used the interactive multimedia that is out there and found that it did not help me as much as actually doing it myself with the specimen in front of me. Were it not for dissections my marks would not have been nearly as high as they were in my courses. If you can get out of it based on your beliefs then cool, but it has been my experience that it helps people tremendously to see first-hand how the tissues are arranged in an actual organism.
