Nasty nurses
Usually, people who are fired for unjust reasons and have references they do get hired again. If I had a job each time you would think? I have worked for some pretty big hospitals that people wait years to get into. I do hae positive experiences but since this past year just awful! I do make friends, use them as references, and keep in touch. Why don't people do a search on fired on here and you will see how many people get fire for whatever reason. On another note, I don't have a staff job I am Traveler/Agency. We don't get treated the same as a staff member. It is a known fact. Read those forums too. So I don't think people are understanding that I don't get Permanent jobs and lose them. I work with one to no day orientation and float to many units. I know several different specialties and can adjust to them. I am not on one floor in any given week. Since I work in big hospitals the most floors I have worked on was 20 in a month. I have to be very fast and knowledgeable. Please, I am just a body to these people. *When I was fired for a Facebook posting when I don't have Facebook. The nurse always gets people fired for whatever. SWhen the Nurse Manager retires she probably won't get away with it. But I was the problem I was asking for it. *When I was fired for not hanging a Heparin bag after I documented it. Well, my friend said "People are mean and he just didn't like you." Men can be just as catty. I guess I was asking for that too. Darn it! *Finally, this time they probably didn't want to deal with a nurse who doesn't doesn't push Cardiac medications on a Medical Surgical floor. Maybe I should of because now that I didn't it must of been my attitude. Sure I told all these people to get rid of me. I have the problem. OK. Come on people. No, I am no means am I perfect and I don't pretend to be. Keep on judging me you wouldn't last two seconds in my shoes. I don't have someone holding my hand telling me it will be okay or paying my bills for me. What I need to look at is the career I am in and what type of places I work in. It isn't stable. If I listened to advice in this thread I would be suicidal. Usually, when you tell people off the net they do their best not to work there not tell me to look within.

Nasty nurses
Since you read my résumé and know all about my career why don't you tell me? Wait let me look at myself again. I might not be good at Math since I had to take Pharm Tests a couple time in the past year too. SMH....

Unfortunately, I can do that but I will be doing it from my car again. Get your NSO Save 1 year salary or quit while you are ahead. Goodnight I have a lot of minimum wage jobs to look for.

The Nursing Shortage

Nasty nurses
Actually, I have been fired three times in the past year from nurses with hear say or lying problems. My family and I lived in our car last summer. Unemployment verification took forever. Of course I got it eventually. I was also reported by a hospital to the Board for not documenting. I have to wait 3 years to find out my fate. Get that NSO Insurance. Lots of little devils out there. Not sure I want to go back. It must be my Karma that I too nice for nursing. It is hard saving when you have to keep catching up from being fired. Still catching up from being homeless last year and my credit is ruined. All these people that have done this to me work for big hospitals, have great salaries, benefits, great credit, etc. There is no Karma unless it is leaking.

I never pushed it. I told the Manager what she did, how I spend 30 minutes sticking up for myself, and printing out the policy for her so she wouldn't push it. Of course I was fired for complaining about how Ridley I was treated by a staff member. Floats need permission to leave late and I was never paid. The crusty nurse kept saying I didn't know anything because I was a float. Guess what the big crusty hospital fired me just like the float she told me I was. They must of been in agreement about Floats or didn't know how to look up the policy on the computer. It took them five days to let me know they didn't need my services anymore. When hospitals have big crusty nurses working for them they don't care about patients it seems they just care about their crusty nurse colleagues getting retirement. She should of been fired not me! My child shouldn't have to suffer. I knew the policy from being a nurse not because it was a hospital policy! Real safe big top hospital. Maybe they will lose their top ten spot like another hospital I know that had old crispy crustaceans running it. They are due for review. Plus I am complaining to the Labor Board they owe me for a lot of time.

Wait I better not say that or a New Grad will get me fired next.

I ask myself, why am I here is nursing for me?
Thanks for the love! NOT

Nasty nurses
Actually, the one who got me fired wanted me to push an IV Cardiac medication on a Medical Surgical floor. Um, yeah... knows ins and outs of what? How to kill a patient? OK... I use to love Crusty Bats until this happened to me today. She gets to sleep her wonderful head tonight while I have to sit here and wonder how I am going to take care of my family. Just no... Rather deal with the newbie. Usually, they don't try getting me fired.

Do nurses get fired often?
I have been fired for the past year for... A Facebook post. I don't have a Facebook. A staff nurse said I posted it so it must be! Not hanging Heparin. I documented it. Although this staff nurse said I didn't so the computer documentation must of been down that day. Ok once I did get to quit first but then they fired back stating I didn't document a medication and now my license has a pending report on it. Yay! This time because I refused to give an IV medication that I wasn't suppose to give according to policy and according to the patient being able to survive in life. I have no idea what to say about this one, lol. Anyhow these posts really made me feel better. As a nurse for almost a decade it does not seem to be getting better for me just the strategy of getting another job is. Thinking I should get out of Travel and Agency work and forget getting into a hospital. They just don't like my happy face there.

Actually this type of nurse will. She will get people fired while she still gets paid and has a roof over her head.

Uncertain about Nursing
I just wrote a whole thread about it although no one answered. I have been homeless several times and fired not for my work ethic. I guess I should move on from this field. Trying to figure out how.

I ask myself, why am I here is nursing for me?
Really why am I here? For the past year I have had such a hard time with this career. I don't know if it is because, I decided to get into Travel to even survive or if I thought switching to an Agency would be better. Today again for sticking up for myself (we will get to that later) I was fired. I have worked for some pretty big hospitals. In BIG CITIES. Maybe I should go smaller? I have been working in Travel for quite awhile. Permanent jobs won't touch me. It seems when I apply I get no response. When I do it is like a year later. Yes, I would be dead. It also might be like you need permanent job experience but, you can't get any because you can't get a permanent job. It is a constant circle. I was already homeless last summer for being fired too. That was not a fun experience. People couldn't believe a nurse lived in her car! As if!!! Yet, I have not ever been fired for anything related to my personality, patient care, coworker issues, etc. People just seem not to like that I come into work with a smile on my face and leave with one. I don't know... I don't have a mean personality. Patients also notice this. This recent firing today... A nurse yelled at me for not giving a medication I wasn't suppose to give as it was the hospitals policy not to give it. Well, it is most hospitals policy not to give it. But, when I said no to the nurse... there it is, just get rid of that nurse. Is this going to be my life with nursing? Should I really continue my education? Which I am suppose to start in July? Here is why... I received Unemployment for all the drama I went through last year. First, I was fired because a nurse I gave report to said I didn't hang a bag of Heparin. Well, it was documented via the new scanning systems we use these days. Then my next assignment, I was fired for a Facebook post last summer. Guess what I don't have a Facebook. After that I cut my contract short at a hospital because they kept having me work as a CNA. They did not like that so in retaliation I received a nice letter that they reported my license which is still pending right now. I have an attorney to handle that and make sure you have NSO! Anyhow, just like today I can only imagine what was said. Although, I did the right thing. I didn't give that medication! I am not sure what else I can do? All I know is nursing. I got into it to help people and all I have seen is despair. Oh gosh I don't want to give up because of these people. Is it because these hospitals are so big they just fire me because, hire anyone they want and hear I am this Travel/Agency person who well they can push around. How can I not be bitter when I go to the next job? If someone can lead me into the right direction if they experienced this in their career please help. Ugh...

"Loosing" my license
"Maybe" is correct. All you need is to make one mistake for anyone to make a complaint to the BON, for them to investigate it, and determine your fate. I think people who work for the BON, the attorneys that defend nurses, and nurses that have experience dealing with their complaint against them know what is going on. The rest can only speculate.
-
"Loosing" my license
A hospital administration made an accusation "out of spite" to the Board. I say this because if it was a permanent staff member I don't think this would of happened. I am "The Traveler". The Board took it seriously and I obtained an attorney through my Insurance to help me through the process. Someone mentioned documentation. That is what I think they are waiting to do is have the time to check my charting. This hospital was still learning their computer charting system at the time and it wasn't even fully functional. This Board is backed up three to four years with complaints so I won't here for awhile.

Is classroom orientation paid?
Let me tell you getting paid for overtime is also a hoot! My last assignment they didn't approve it. I couldn't wait to get finished with that assignment!
-
Experience needed
Depending on the type of floor you work on depends on if you can start an IV. If you don't work on a floor that doesn't have too many of them you are not going to gain the skill. As a Traveler some hospitals have a policy that you cannot start IVs. That was fun going to my next assignment dull. Lol! I was asked a few times if I could during phone interviews but, I don't think it was definitive of me being hired. I know plenty of people that cannot start them and they are seasoned. Some hospitals even require you to have travel experience in order to take a job. With the minimal amount of orientation offered the really just want to throw you into the wolves. I stopped travel for 3 years to work Per Diem at an agency. It took me 3 months to obtain a position even with a hospital background. They didn't consider agency the same as travel. Might take some time but it is possible! Plus I think it all depends on what specialty you are in.
-
Is classroom orientation paid?
I totally agree with you. Some nurses have not read the fine print, received their paycheck, and were astonished with what they were paid. They of course quit and did not complain to the Labor Board. So how are they to know if no one speaks up? Then of course they get away with it. Seems to be the new thing since I have always been paid FULLY for orientation before, or haven't had to wait a few weeks.

Is it ever full time work?
Here have been a few times I have been cancelled. For the most part it was the hours I wanted and needed.
-
Have you ever worked through a agency?
I think I have seen some New Grad ads for PDN a few years ago. I remember a family hired the New Grad with no experience over me. Needless to say anything is possible. I don't live in the area anymore so I am not sure if they still do it the same. I do see New Grad agency ads for School Nurses. My experience as I was way too nervous to work for agency as a brand new nurse and never thought I would. I began working agency after a year in LTC and then again a year after getting hospital experience. It brought me to Travel and now I am back working for agency.

NYC Travel Nursing
Indeed certainly has a bunch if you do a search. Some you have to go directly into the office. It seems most are in the Garment District. I would not recommend Fastaff or White Glove. Just from my experience. AMN has most of the larger hospital contracts. Although you can certainly apply to another agency and AMN will screen you.
