Excelsior Grads How do you explain clinicals?
I am an excelsior graduate, 2010. I finished my BSN last June. I have been working in a busy ER for several years. The California BRN will NOT give me a California license. I work in Nevada and commute.

Finally got a job!
I passed the NCLEX on the first try in 2010. I have not worked as a nurse because I could not find a job. Finally I got a job!! It is a RN in a small ER. I am so thrilled! I have been a Paramedic for the past 23 years and most employers felt that being a Paramedic was more of an liability than an asset. This new job is going to require a substantial commute. I am so excited to finally be able to work as an RN. I will still need to work as a Paramedic in California to maintain my Health benefits. They are so much better and so much cheaper than what my new job offers in Nevada. I hope I can handle 2 jobs for a while. I understand that after a year in the ER, I will be able to move about a little easier.

Excelsior College & California
I don't know! I am still holding my breath that they will let me endorse into Calfiornia once I complete my BSN. I switched from EC to WGU to finish my BSN just for this reason
-
Excelsior College & California
Yes, WGU is approved Excelsior BSN is not.

Excelsior College & California
I live and work in California as a Paramedic. I graduated from Excelsior in 2010. It is an excellent program. I am currently a licensed RN in Nevada. I have been trying to get licensed in California. So far I have been told to re-apply when my BSN is completed. That appears to satisfy the Calfornia BRN. Interestingly enough they will accept a BSN but it needs to be from a approved college. I am attending WGU. I will let you know if I am successful!

Giving Report to Medics... What do they know?
Treat the Paramedics with repsect! Given them report as you would another nurse. I am a Parmedic as well as an RN. I currently work in both fields. Some nurses don't get that Paramedics aren't just "ambulance drivers". They are health care professionals with an education and professional license. Respectfully, Robin RN, EMT-P

Renown Hospital New Grad Question
Yep, I am! I can't be a flight nurse as 2 years ICU/CCU experience as an RN is needed. Plus I don't like to fly. For now, I am staying put.

Renown Hospital New Grad Question
I have worked for the same employer for the past 23 years. I am at the top pay and retirement step. I have my choice of schedules too. I make 92K per year before overtime. I work in the highest pay area in the nation for Paramedics. Starting Paramedics work terrible shifts and make 1/2 the pay.

My reality of becoming an RN
I feel your pain! I am in the same boat. I am still working full time in my non-nursing profession. I try and work 1 day a week as an RN. But the reality is I make a lot more in my non-nursing job, and do way less work. Sad but true fact.

What's your opinion about Excelsior Nsg Program?
It is a great program if you state accepts it. I graduated and passed my boards with 75 questions. I live in California, and can't work here as an RN. I am licensed in Nevada.

7 wks pregnant, offered 36 hr night position
That is true! My bad! I assumed she worked for the same employer, just new position.

7 wks pregnant, offered 36 hr night position
You are pregnant not disabled. If it is your dream job take it! Besides once you have the position, if you pregancy related complications you have protection under FMLA.

Renown Hospital New Grad Question
I have applied at St Mary's. What smaller hospitals are in the area? I don't want to work in a SNF or LTC. I am in a strange situation where I have another job that pays more than nursing so taking a position in a SNF or LTC just isn't an option.

Renown Hospital New Grad Question
I have been submitted applications to Renown monthy. A recruiter finally called me and told me to quit applying! I was told "We don't hire unless you graduated from one of our local schools" Wow.....

The CA New Grad Crisis?
I am a new grad in CA. I have been licensed since last June. I have been offered jobs in LTC but I have NO interest in doing so. I have a full time job that is not in nursing making more money. So for now I will wait for the economy to turn around then I hope to get a hospital job. I am not going to leave a 6 figure a year job for LTC, or a SNF!

Licensed RN, but need to repeat my ADN program
CA BRN does not recognize Excelsior College ADN's for licensure due to a disput regarding the clinical. Excelsior requires that all ADN students be LVN's, RT's or Paramedics with a strong clinical background to enter the program. To graduate from Excelsior, you must pass and extremely rigourus clinical exam weekend (CPNE) The pass rate is only 58-62%! CA and Maryland will not accept Excelsior grads. Georgia and Washington states require Excelsior Grads to do a clinical after graduation in order to sit for the boards. In my case I am licensed in Nevada state with nursing experience, but can't ever work in California unless it is in a Federal facility. Which there are no jobs currently due to the recession. So I am considering repeating a 2 year ADN program in California. I will be done with my BSN before I get into any program because the wait times here are 2+ years!

Licensed RN, but need to repeat my ADN program
Hi, I am looking for advice for anyone that may have been or is in my position. I am a licensed RN in Nevada. I want to work in California but can't since I am an Excelsior Graduate. Does anyone know of a program that will accept my degree for partial credit? I serious do not want to repeat nursing school. I would gladly challenge course work or even do a full clinical if needed. So far the local colleges won't touch me because I am a licensed RN. I am so frustrated and don't know where to turn. The CA BRN is useless!

*UNEMPLOYED NURSES*
Passed NCLEX in June 2010. Can't find a new Grad job in my area. I am working in a non-nursing job but making more than a new grad RN.

Excelsior College & California
Not only do I have my ADN, but I am almost finished with my BSN at Excelsior! Fortunately for me, I have a good paying non-nursing job. When I enrolled in EC California would let you endorse in from another state as long as you have 6-12 months acute care experience. I have lived in California all my life and EC was the only program that worked with my home and work schedule. I am currently licensed in Neveda and commute to Reno to work 1 day a week as an RN. So unless the California BRN changes their policy on this matter, I am rather out of luck. I have been trying to get on with the VA or Federal but so far no luck there either. It is very frustrating to say the least. Excelsior is a good program! You have to be compotent to pass the CPNE. I wish I had better news for you! Good luck with you education and your move to California. Robin

Excelsior College & California
Yes they shut me down straight away. I am willing to do additional training or clinical if they would like. But they said no, you will need to repeat your ADN program:eek: I thought I was being reasonable. I guess I will start writing letters to the elected officials in California. Yikes!

Excelsior College & California
Need I mentioned that I also passed the NCLEX on the first try with 75 questions!

Excelsior College & California
I am licensed in Nevada! Well here is the irony! I work in California for a federal facility as an RN, but walk across the street and CAN"T work at different hospital. But California sure likes my income taxes!

Excelsior College & California
Yep this is true! I am VERY anger about this! California BRN is just awful. I contacted them and asked what additional clinical could I do to satisfy them. Keep in mind that I am currently employed and working in acute care as an RN. I was told to complete an approved ADN program. Wow! I can't believe this!
