  1. msnurse14 i would love to get those off your hands. I don't know how to contact through this forum. if i could get ur email address and set something it that would be great.
  2. I graduated in Dec 2009 and started looking for jobs right after graduation. I sent out applications to all surrounding hospitals in my area, but was really eyeing a New Grad. Residency Program. I was patient for a month and they called me in for an interview. After the first inteview with HR and the Manager of the floor. She said don't expect to get a call from us for 3 weeks because they were interviewing about 100 other applicants. And i waited patiently never calling them once. During the time i wait i never got a call back from any other hospitals. They called me back for a panel interview and only 8 other applicants received it. They calld me back the next day and I was offered a job. So it took me 3 months to find a job at a Magnet status, teaching hospital, in the new grad residency program that spans over 1 year, and my orientation is 18 weeks long!! There are success stories, i feel really blessed to b able to receive this oppurtunity. So far i'm loving the ICU, and i'm so appreciative of the investment that they've put into me. I know its bad out there but there is def. HOPE!

And as for the original posters questions, I really think you should stick it out and fight, you will have justice on your side. I really hope you can take this mistake and build upon it. I'm also a new grad and working through orientation right now, I feel like everydays a step further towards who I want to be as a nurse. :) Hang in there I'm sure everything happens for a reason.
  4. I live in IL and when we did our clinicals, depending on the site they would require a mandatory drug test. and the school does do background checks before they accepts you but they check ur background with the police station. unless the nursing home reported you, i don't think the school would know. You sound very regretful of what happened, i hope all goes well for you.
  5. Chicago. I graduated December 09 and took a mini vacation and started work in March 2010. But i don't suggest moving here to find a job cause half of my classmates are still looking. and my hospital just announced that they are on a hiring freeze for another month.
  6. I love my hospital. They have invested alot into our nurses and into new grads. i'm a new grad and in the new grad residency program. This year for nurses week we received umbrellas and free food. our doctors also bought i food that covered the whole week. We also just had employee appreciation day and we received really nice jackets!! Oh by the way we are a Magnet hospital!
  7. I think u would get the most out of a CNA job because you'd be exposed the hospital setting and work closely with nurses and met CRNAs. It think the best certifications are for you to get a CPR cert because it would b required if you work in the hospital. If you could work as a cna in an ICU so that you have ur foot in the door once ur done iwth nursing school to work in an ICU because u need that to go to CRNA school. CRNA school is really hard to get in so u have to really focus during nursing school and get those good grades. preferably above a 3.4. THats all i have for now, i'm a new grad and working in an ICU i'm also working towards my CRNA, i wish i was ambitious as you when i was 16!! i was just trying to get by with high school! Good luck in you endeavors and i love your attitude and energy!
  8. new grad payrates range from 24-27 in chicago and the suburbs. most of the hospitals are hiring but u have to have experience. if you are a new grad or with less than 2 years of experience it will b a challenge.
  9. I am also on orientation in a medical cardiac ICU! i know how u feel exactly!! i'm so overhwlemed at the same time excited about all the new challenges. i think if u look at it in a positive way things will b easier. don't beat urself up for things you don't know or when u needa ask a "dumb" question its OKAY! of course we don't know everything, and the person asking obviously would know the answer to her question but if u ask her a question she might not know either because we are human :) thats what someone told me to calm my nerves when i first started. We have an APN that is constantly around to make sure we know what we are doing, and would orrally test us randomly throughout the day and that to me is the most stressful part of orientation!
  10. I just graduated in December from a private university and my loans amount to 80,000!!! I feel like a heavy burden is on my shoulders at all times. I'm one of the few who got lucky and was hired right out of school. But the New-grad income after taxes, 401k, insurance i only take home only about 50% of my paycheck. After rent, credit card bills, and expenses of daily living i dunno how i'd ever pay off my loans. The end of my grace period is June and i would have to b paying alittle over 700 a month for all of my loans!! I feel so cheated because I was told that nurses salary where more than enough to pay back the loans that i've acquired!! I'm already looking for a PRN job even though i'm still in orientation on a MICCU. I dunno if its a wise decision because its already stressful enough to b a new grad in the ICU but thats what i have to do to cover my bills.
  11. I'm on my 6th week in the MICU and i cannot wait for my one year to be over with NOW. Congrats on your one year!
  12. Dr Slaughter and he was a surgeon!! I swear its true! LOL
  13. I graduated december of 2009 and I just started my orientation 3 weeks ago. I would have to say that hard work was the key to finding a job. I found out about a New RN Residency program through my school 2 days before the deadline. And i begged my instructors to write me recommendations letters and personally drove it to the HR department the day of deadline but they closed early for Christmas party. I had the security personnel write on my resume that i was there friday so i would make it ontime and slipped it under the door. i waited 3 weeks and received a call for HR and Manager interview. THat was the hardest thing that i had to prepare for. REMEMBER TO LOOK YOUR BEST AND DO YOUR RESEARCH ABOUT THE FACILITY BEFORE YOU GO. i told them how impressed i was that they were a teaching hospital etc. I didn't get a call back from them for 3 weeks. But got a peer interview and they called me back the next day to offer me a job. So the key is PERSERVERANCE.
