I'm more just mad that our school is not doing what they said they would do. That's pretty much it. I think people should just be aware before they invest in this program. Thank you all for your offers of help. I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Yes I think it is important students know this up front. If had known it would be this difficult, I would have reconsidered my decision to go to this school. The one MD I am precepting with now mentioned that it is truly a shame this and many other online programs put this responsibility on the students.

Same here, they just keep looking. They have some form for you to fill out on maybes that they reach out to again but this has not proved useful. They basically encourage you to reach out to everyone you know and keep calling. This is kinda hard when you work and do school full time M-F 8-5. I too right now am against paying for preceptors. Its just all a huge disappointment to me at this time.

Has anyone delayed their program due to no preceptors being available? I am supposed to be starting my second clinical rotation in March and haven't been able to secure anyone. I feel like our school does not help us at all and I'm really frustrated. Seems like they got rid of some of the COVID allowances recently too on specialty hours. Anyways, feeling frustrated and even debating switching to MSN-Educator track.

I know Dawn I feel the same way. I feel like some people will look down on me if I work outside a hospital but we have to do what makes us happy. If we never try we will never know if we will like it more than the hospital. You should definitely apply for the clinic job if it's only 10 miles away that's way better.

Hi I need some advice. I had an interview today with a VA clinic operated by Valor healthcare. Has anyone worked for them? I have three years experience in the hospital mainly tele and medsurg. I know I don't want to work in the hospital forever and can definitely feel the burn out sometimes but am a little torn about losing skills. On the other hand though, I have never worked primary care and am interested in that part of nursing especially since I am considering FNP school down the road. To those who work in a clinic, are you happy with your choice?? Has anyone gone back to the hospital after doing clinic work? The job sounds very appealing with the no holidays, no nights, no weekends. 8-5 hours and it is way closer than my job now as I commute 45 minutes each way and I would only be commuting 15 minutes each way. I don't have an offer as of yet but my mind is reeling about a possible career choice. Anyways any insight would be awesome. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!

We had this admit come up from ER. She mentions that she has shingles. This is after she touches our arms to say thank you for random things and any time we are near. After we are aware she has shingles she continues to touch us out of gratitude. I get that you want to be friendly lady but don't touch me!!

He said he's a pharmacist and people are always yelling at him when waiting in line at CVS. I think he was dying for his turn to complain haha.

Maybe you could eventually get something per diem in the hospital? I would keep the public health job especially if you enjoy it.

I was wondering what I should have done in this situation. It was start of night shift and I heard about this very demanding guy who was being really rude. The day nurse had two patients like this and was at wits end. I noticed his call light was on and I went in the room and he just starting yelling about how his IV has been beeping for a half hour and nobody is addressing it. He goes on this tirade of how us nurses pretty much suck and the doctors are a 12. He also says "I don't care what my nurse is busy with she needs to take care of me when I need it. Are there other sick people on this floor (duh) because I don't get why nobody takes care of me. I pay for insurance I'm not a loser patient who doesn't have insurance so I deserve to be waited on hand and foot." At the time I was kinda in shock about how rude he was. I just let him sort of get it out and I was trying to be super kind but I just wanted to scream back. He did end up calming down thankfully. I didn't want him to keep abusing the other nurses like this but I just don't know what to say to these type of patients. Any suggestions?

It doesn't hurt to tell your manager that you would like a day shift position if it becomes available. You might be required to put in six months at that shift (that's our hospital requirement) but they might have something come open and they would probably rather move you to that position then hire somebody outside of the hospital. Let them know! Night shift can be tough on your life!

No I've never done that but that's a good idea haha.

On my second day of orientation as a new grad, the nurse (who showed up 20 minutes late for report btw) said I would be taking care of all five patients and said "you can do it don't worry" and then proceeded to ditch me for most of the shift. I was on the verge of tears the whole time. Thank god nothing bad happened.

I am wondering the same thing right now. I have worked nights for two years. You would think you would get used to it but my tummy troubles have gotten worse and my energy level is getting worse. Plus I feel grumpy a lot. I have talked to people who switched to days. They said it's definitely busier and nonstop, but it's helpful to have worked nights first for the experience and it just feels more natural to the system. I think I'm going to try it. Thanks so much for your reply. I don't have a husband (only boyfriend), no kids, I think it would be four or five days a week I don't remember. Maybe I could request working longer shifts for 3 or 4 days a week. Thanks again.

Hello, I have worked in Med-Surg for about 2 years now. I know I don't want to do Med-Surg forever. I interviewed for this outpatient surgery position a year ago and even shadowed there and they ended up canceling the position. I was really bummed because it is something I think I would really enjoy. Well recently the manager contacted me again and wanted to know if I was interested in the position again. The only problem is I'm moving closer to my hospital job next week which would put me an hour away from the outpatient surgery position. I'm torn on what to do. It's such horrible timing. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Med-surg is a great place to start you really get to see a little of everything.

I'm so sorry what a horrible situation. People can be so unreasonable at times. I think he was just majorly misunderstanding you. I don't understand how his pain wasn't really addressed before. I mean you always start with oral meds and then give IV meds. I think you did everything right and handled it well. I don't understand why his new IV wasn't started since the charge nurse knew about it. I would try not to dwell on it which I know is hard to do. I had a patient complain about me to the charge nurse recently. It really sucks. Keep your chin up I think you did nothing wrong and sometimes you can't make people happy no matter what you do.

You really get your prioritization down in med-surg and sometimes patients really open up to you which is great.
