Total cost is $2900, with $140 for uniforms. I am going to Grossmont HOC in San Diego.

I start next month at Grossmont HOC in San Diego! So nervous and excited! And p.s. - screw all the RN programs that didn't accept me, you are missing out! haha!!

I applied this morning - they are my only option. I have NO idea what I'm going to do if I'm not approved. I'm attending an ROP (Adult Ed) program, and there is NO financial aid offered.

I just received my first rejection letter (boo) from Grossmont's RN program. Thankfully, I was accepted into their LVN program that starts this summer. At least I have a plan B!!

Just got the email - didn't make the cut for Grossmont's RN program. I'm not that shocked. I am thrilled to be starting a different program this August instead!

I know in the San Diego area that Grossmont's ADN program grads have a leg up on articulation agreements between SDSU and USD (how fancy LOL). You can go directly from Grossmont's ADN > MSN, and you earn a BSN along the way. I guess they figure if you're crazy enough to shell out $$$$ to get your MSN from USD, that they might as well throw a secondary degree at you just for the heck of it.

In San Diego, my CNA instructor was an LVN with about ten years experience. He did not have his teaching degree, but was working towards it. I too would like to teach someday.

I know here in San Diego, the UCSD extension program offers a case management program, with state certification. It's $1200, and only takes a week or so to complete. I'm considering doing this after I finish LVN school, so that I'll have more to offer. I also have a BA in Sociology, so hopefully I can find a way to transition away from bedside contact and into a more educational or administrative type roll.

I'm trying to find a way to work through my lvn program too. My employer won't allow me to work only one day a week, so I have to decide if I'm willing to work full weekends, in addition to being in the program full time. I could also do a 'double' shift once a weekend, but I did that for three months in the past, and it nearly killed me! I wish I could just work one day a week. It would solve all my problems, and I would be looking forward to school starting so much more! I hope something works out..

Interesting. I will definitely keep this in mind as I move through my LVN program. Part of me is TERRIFIED that I won't actually like the down-and-dirty part of nursing, as much as I would like patient education, research, ect. My ultimate goal is still to become a diabetic nurse educator. Here's hoping....:)

Grossmont's LVN program receives on average 600 applicants, and takes 60. They have an undisclosed cut off that you must make on the TEAS V exam in order to be considered for admission. The cost of the program is $3000 and it is three semesters in length, with one summer off. The campus is not...glamorous, but for the cost, you can't beat it! Best of luck to you...

Hey guys, UC San Diego Extension offers a $1200 CCM certification course. It's only one week long. I'm starting LVN school this summer, and will definitely be taking the CCM cert. course afterward. I do have a question though - I've heard that case managers that work for insurance companies are sometimes able to work from home. What do you know about this? I have baby fever on the brain..I do apologize. ;-)

Hi Jason, Congrats on becoming a CNA and on working towards your LVN license! I finished my CNA training this past fall, but have worked for a private in home client for the past year. I highly recommend putting your "feelers" out there, and spreading the word to family and friends that you are interested in a caregiver/home health position. You'd be surprised how many people are desperate to find someone to help care for a loved one, or for themselves. Places like Craigslist and agencies are areas to avoid. I found my job through a friend connection, and it is the best job I have ever had. I work part time, and have full benefits. My pay rate is far above average, and some days I don't even feel like I'm at "work." Long story short, you don't necessarily need a CNA license to find a fantastic health care related job. I'm glad I finished my CNA training this fall, as it's now allowed me to begin an LVN program this summer. Best of luck to you!

Hey guys, I added up my possible "points" and came up with 77/100. Do you think that will get me into the RN program at Grossmont? I just got in to their LVN program...but RN is my first pick. Can't wait to see what happens!

Hi guys, I'm in the process of applying too. I am anxious to have everything turned in by the end of the month! It is a lot of work. I found out last week that I made early decision for Grossmont's LVN program, so if nothing else, I have that to fall back on! Woo hoo!

Please save yourself and don't go to this school. Dear god.

Poway's CNA program is top notch - Mr. Tom is the best instructor ever!!

The "ADN" certificate program at Kaplan costs over 50k. You will need to find a job immediately upon graduation in order to begin to pay back that amount of debt. You will not be able to find a job and you will be shocked and amazed to see just how fast 50k in school debt becomes 70k with interest. You will be paying back the loans forever. As far as I can tell, there is only a small handful of people who would ever have a half baked decent reason to go to this factory; if you have a military bill that will pay for most of your certificate; if you have money coming out your ears and simply want the letters "RN" after your name, but don't actually intend to ever work as a nurse; or if you're flat out CRAZY.

Please remember most people in this thread are trying to get into the program and are not going to have the most objective view of the program or it's dangers. I've put in my two cents, and have passed on the warnings from fellow nursing students who have witnessed the issues first hand - my statement is bold, but I have no tolerance for this program's offerings or the money machine they run. There are no short cuts in life. Kaplan feels differently. You decide. ~

I'm speaking from a place of knowing several people who decided to go Kaplan and have told me to warn others of the school.

You guys are going to be in debt up to your eyeballs and are not going to be able to find a job. Just a heads up. Go anywhere else - run.

The Concorde "campus" in SD is a JOKE. Save your money, and please look to go anywhere else. Horrible school.

I'm feeling desperate again, which means the Kaplan option is back on the table. Sigh~ I feel like Kaplan is the easy out, and generally the easy choice is usually not the right one. I don't know what to do. Going to Kaplan feels like selling my soul to the devil. But at age 30, carpet bombing community colleges with applications with little to no hope of getting in seems awful too. I'm terrified of going into massive debt for their degree. Pursuing nursing is like punching yourself in the face over and over again. And YES I'm feeling extra depressed about it today!
