Feeling so discouraged
It sounds like you're burnt out on the floor and not nursing in general. If you like women's health then start applying to those units. Yes they are heard to get into but it doesn't hurt to try. Go down to those units where you work and try to get chummy with the managers. Stay where you are for now but in your spare time study up on women's health. That way you will be prepared when an opportunity arises and also so you can shift nursing gears and nit spend all your time thinking of med/tele. I hope you will reconsider because this really is a very rewarding career in the long run. You can do this girl!

A few questions, please
Hi. Are you sure the hospice nurse wasn't talking about the Atropine being prescribed for secretions? Or maybe she mixed up her meds and said Morphine but meant to say Atropine.

I have an interview in a level 1 trauma center, need advice!
My jaw literally dripped when I read this. I graduated last May and right now I am fighting tooth and nail for a HOSPICE job. I'm going in for a second interview in the morning. If I was in your position I would be doing back flips! Take the job!
-
Which job would you take?
So first I got a call this morning from the hospice HR telling me to come in for a second interview with the PCA. I'm going in tomorrow morning. Then the oncology clinic called me telling me to come in Tuesday to shadow the nurse and get a feel for it then talk about the job after. I think if the hospice offers me a job tomorrow I'm going to take it. The pay is better and I like that it's in the hospital. Let's see how it goes tomorrow! I'm nervous!

Which job would you take?
Thanks bebbercorn! I hope one of these jobs comes through. I'm just asking on the off chance I actually get two offers. I think you're right. I'll probably take the hospice job but I'm worried that if the oncology one offers first, what will I say? I don't want to make them wait too long because it might slip out from under me. Crazy how I've gone from zero response to suddenly having two prospects at once!

Which job would you take?
Ok I've had two interviews this week after 7 months of applying. One is for an inpatient hospice unit in a hospital. It's not working directly for the hospital but for a hospice company that is located on a floor in the hospital. The other is for an outpatient oncology clinic. I'm pretty sure I got the job for the oncology clinic but will know by tomorrow. My interview at the hospice unit went really well also and they said I should know by the end of the week. I'm asking your opinions as to which job would benefit me more in the long run. In the hospice position I would be in the hospital which provides an advantage to me in the future if I want to move to a floor in the hospital. Plus they do have some patients in drips and also do continuous bladder irrigations, etc. As for oncology, that's a great specialty to get into. I'd like to hear what you all think. Thanks!

Feeling like a stalker....
If u have an offer somewhere else, I would shoot her a text and ask if she has any idea when she can get u in for an interview. Let her know ur situation. Honesty is the best policy. If she really wants to see u she'll get u in quickly. It would be a real shame if the other job slipped through the cracks while u were waiting. It might seem pushy but if she knows the back story then she will probably understand. Good luck!

What's the job market like in Florida right now? New grad.
I'm in Miami and it's HORRIBLE here! I have been looking for work since last June. And I'm not picky either. I'll spin signs on a corner for anyone who will hire me as an RN. It's bad...

Preparation for post grad job?
In my opinion, stay where u are. It is highly unlikely that u will be hired as a CNA anywhere especially if u are an ADN grad. They don't want to hire us because they know we're only there until we find the RN position. The responsibilities u have at ur present job will look great on ur resume. Use them to ur advantage. Good luck!

New grad offered a job
- New grad offered a job
I am a new grad from Miami and have been looking for a job since I graduated last May. Well I finally was offered a position in Williston, ND. Those of you who live there know the housing situation. I've been all over craigslist trying to find a place to live. Does anyone know what I can do?? I do NOT want to pass up this golden employment opportunity just because I don't have a bed and shower. Please help!- Dissapointed new grad
I'm also a May grad and August licensed. This is by far the most frustrating experience of my life. I'm in Miami and there are very few opportunities with thousands of applicants. Here is a suggestion: if you are willing to relocate, look into Mercy Hospital in Williston, ND. I applied there this morning and got a call 2 hours later from HR and then a call an hour after that from the floor manager. They are offering me a position. But, I can't take it. I have a husband and 2 kids that can't come with me. My husband can't manage them by himself and we have no family to help us. The main reason is housing there is very expensive. I'm talking $3000 for a 2 bed apt. Plus, it's a huge climate change from Miami. -60 degrees is insane to me. I applied thinking I wouldn't get a call but they are hungry for nurses. They don't care I'm a new grad with no experience. So, if this is something you think you can pull off I really suggest you apply! Maybe you can find someone in the hospital you can split rent with. Worth a try for experience!- Which state to take the NCLEX? Endorsement from VA to FL?
I don't mean to rain on your parade but good luck finding a job in Florida ?. It is very tough here. What part are you moving to? I'm originally from So Cal, went to nursing school in Las Vegas, and moved to Miami after graduation. This was in May last year. I still haven't gotten even a single interview and I've applied all over this state. Good luck to you. Maybe you'll have better luck than me!- Trying to find a job and doing my hospital research but don't know how to approach it
As a fellow new grad who has been on the job hunt since last May, I will tell you that you will likely have to e pand your search. The chances of you scoring an ICU position right now are slim. Even LTC wants a year of experience. Good luck to you!- Didn't get the job
I'm so sorry. I'm also a May '12 grad and I haven't gotten a single interview yet. I'm in the Miami area and I'm new to the area so I have it pretty bad. No connections whatsoever. It's pretty depressing. I hope I don't pass the year mark with no opportunities because that will really kick my butt. Good luck to you. Keep at it. That's all we can do...- Passed my Boards Last Week, I got a Job...Confused
Good luck with your interview! But I have to say, if that does not pull through, TAKE THE OTHER JOB! Take it from me...I graduated in May 2012, then moved from Las Vegas to Miami, passed my boards here in August, and I still have not even been fortunate enough to have an interview. Thank your lucky stars that you have these opportunities at your feet! Listen, whichever job you decide on, let the other job know there is a nurse in Miami who will gladly take your place! LOL...I really wish you luck and congratulations!- New Grad in Miami needs Nursing Manager help
Hi everyone. I'm a new grad (May 2012) still on the hunt for my first job. I went to school in Las Vegas, NV and moved to miami, FL when I graduated. I am having absolutely ZERO luck. I have done everything I can as far as applying. I have not only applied to hospitals but have applied to LTC, Hospice, Home Health, you name it. I was on numerous waiting lists just to be able to volunteer only to be told even they don't want me because they don't want me "selling myself" to the various units when I'm supposed to be there to help. I can't get a job as a CNA, ER tech, or anything else because I'm an RN and they don't want someone who will drop everything as soon as an RN position comes along (understandable). There are new grad programs I have applied to but since I didn't go to school here in Miami, I don't qualify for the scholarship programs. I have applied to other areas of Florida and even other states. I spoke to a nursing recruiter in West Palm Beach who told me they won't consider me for their new grad program since I don't live within 10-15 miles of the hospital. She didn't even want to take me seriously when I told her I would relocate. She's "heard it all before". I am enrolled in an RN to BSN program already since it seems having a BSN is really important in this area of the country. I have had my ACLS for a year and I'm getting PALS in two weeks. So, my question to nursing managers, recruiters, and HR is: do you guys really not mind it when an applicant comes in face-to-face to hand you a resume? Everyone keeps telling me to go to the floor and go directly to the manager to try to give them my resume and maybe set up an interview on the spot. I am more than willing to give it a shot, but I'm afraid that I will annoy someone and be blacklisted or something. I know it shows eagerness and persistence and all that, and I am all those things, but I'm also acutely aware of personal space and intrusion. The last thing I want to do is intrude on someone. Can someone please give me some advice? I'm a new grad in desperate need of help!! Thanks! Erica- New Grad in Miami...HELP!
Hello everyone, I am in need of some desperate help. Here is some background information: I just graduated in May with an Associate's degree from a school in Las Vegas, NV. Now I live in Miami, FL and the problem with that is I do not know ANYBODY. I have been applying to jobs every single day and some of them multiple times. All I get are rejection emails, the usual. I started an online program to get my BSN. I am BLS and ACLS certified. Unfortunately, I am not blessed to have experoence as far as being a CNA, etc. How can I possibly get a job? I apply to hospitals, senior care facilities, vaccination clinics, you name it. There is even a waiting list to volunteer at hospitals. Since it seems you need to know someone to get a job, I guess I am really stuck since I have no connections whatsoever. Any advice would be enormously appreciated. Thank You! Erica- Attention Miami Nurses!
Ok will do. But, I still need to know if I need to be bilingual to get a job down there...- Attention Miami Nurses!
Hi! I am a nursing student and will (knock on wood) be graduating in May 2012. I live in Las Vegas right now where I'm attending school. I will be moving to Miami after I graduate and will take my NCLEX in Florida. My questions are: Are there many nursing positions available in Miami compared to other places in the U.S.? Do you HAVE to be bilingual to get a job in Miami? I want to work in the E.D., is this a tough position to get right out of school? What's the average pay of a new grad in the E.D. or any other hospital positions? I appreciate any help I can get! Thanks bunches!!!- Nursing School Jitters
I start on Aug 30th. Today we had our second round of orientation and our ATI testing. I'm nervous because I have no medical experience and I don't want to look like a dope. I'm hoping I can manage my busy life. I have 4 classes a week including clinical, all in the morning. Then my husband goes to work at 2 in the afternoon and I'll be taking care of my 3 and 7 yr olds until bedtime. When they finally hit the sack, it's back to my nose in my books. I've talked to students without jobs or families who tell me horror stories about how much work there is. Now add kids (and my husband who is the 3rd child) into the mix, and I've got a blender full of worries and stress! I'm freaking out but I'm going to work my tail off to make this happen! Si se puede! Yes we can! LOL- Clinical rotation hours (shift lengths/times) at the diff programs?
Hi, I am entering CSN's full time program this August. They do 6-hr clinical rotations once a week for first semester. You either get the morning rotation or the afternoon rotation. This all depends on what number in line you are, which is drawn randomly. There are more morning rotations than afternoon, so afternoon is very competitive. Hope this helps :-)- CSN Fall 2010
