  1. in our unit its mostly 5 and 2 which is haldol 5mg or ativan 2 mg PO/IM lately a lot of doctors orders prn zyprexa..I heard the makers of thorazine does'nt make liquid PO thorazine anymore..we have patients who got used in the usual neuroleptics that would not clear up with the new generation drugs [zprexa (luv the zydis, forget cheeking but the IM is indeed takes time to be prepared), geodon (im not a fan of geodon its just like pumping up the dosage and seldom see improvements) and abilify (seen patient get violent on the first few days of abilify and insomnia is a common complain).. etc..] that even more side effects expected they still have to bear and give the old ones..
  2. got this attending in the unit that every nurses dreaded to work with..he is well known to underestimate capabilities of new nurses..though ive been working there for a year now..I always have the feeling that he doubt my assessment skills..one day when we were in a team mtg..I reported that the evening nurse documented that the patient has lice and nits because the ordered shampoo arrived late she passed it on to be applied on my shift which i didnt apply because the patient has no lice and nits..the MD in front of everybody asked me..how confident are you in your assessment? I told him you could check it yourself and we could start from there and besides lice and nits are soooo common in the Philippines we even put them in bottles...he covered himself with a laugh..now he is saying that with all the new nurses coming in I am already a senior nurse..he is still as arrogant as he is but I don't let his attitude ruin my day..
  3. hi there Pinoy RN here in Albany, NY passed my NCLEX last march took the usual road to get here..pass all my exam, visascreen, find an agency, get here, orient in the hospital and sit for the exam..everything is doin great..I am working in an intensive psychiatric setting (was a police officer in the Phil working as a nurse in a drug treatment facility). I have only 1 yr hospital experience but was accepted bec what matters to this center is you passed the exam and they have a great hospital orientation for it is a teaching hospital..not much for discrimination people are good my manager even help me to furnish my apartment..some co-workers bully you but you will learn to be assertive in time..good luck to those taking the exam..it was'nt that bad as it was publicized per my friend who took it last monday..
  4. I started working in general ward after graduation and passing my boards in the PHIL shifted a year after and became a police officer working as an RN in a drug treatment facility and now I am a Psyche nurse here in Albany after hurdling the thousand and one exam to get me here..no regrets..I love where I am now!
  5. I've been working nights for a full month now and gee you are right..i always mess my atm pin putting the pin number for the access door in my unit..huh :uhoh21: you should see my face when i am in a grocery line and i am trying to figure out what the damn pin is!!!
  6. I never had one..never crossed my mind when I discovered I am pregnant after being treated with a bout of pneumonia and asthma..I was on avelox and prednisone and the doctor is unsure what will happen to my baby..abortion is not legal in my country but friends is telling me the odds of ending up with a baby with congenital defects is high and I should consider having my baby aborted..the decision is always on you..I chose not to..my baby did have a congenital defects (cleft lip and a palate) but i never regret that I have him..he is a source of my joy and contentment
  7. thank you very much this group really had helped me to be where I am now..I could attach RN now after my name..I passed the NCLEX!!! yipeeee :balloons:
  8. huh mine shut off at 110 I can't remember much about the questions I got..I was calm all throughout the exam and start freaking out when it shut down bec I wanted to answer a lot more thinking that 110 is not enough to proove my capacity..I'm working tomorrow and I don't think so I got the guts to checck the results while I am on unit..
  9. i tried this online review course and hopeful that it prepared me on my upcoming boards though I reviewed kaplan critical thinking strategies, saunders and mosby..I find kaplans questions the hardest while those at learningext not so tricky but straightforward..will keep you posted on what really helped me most..
  10. its my third night..and yeah the mind is willing but the body is weak..i havent sleep for 3days for more than 4 hours and its driving me nuts..I should try the apples cant drink coffee i promised to abstain from that not until i passed my boards... :chuckle
  11. yah sure..the answers will be right in front of me I just have to choose between the four..but I do get nervous..I think it is normal to be nervous..isnt it :uhoh21: i will take nclex on march 30..wish me luck guys!!! (I know its not only luck I need..I am studying ok..)thanks for posting tips here in taking the exam this bulletin board is really a BIG help :roll
  12. I left nursing for a while and became a police officer in my country. I trained for 6 months and study basics of public safety. It is nice to know other field and I actually enjoyed the training..the markmanship..rapelling..commando training..cool. After graduation though I was assigned in Anti Illegal drugs task force rehabilitation center and become a nurse again..they say that for several times in your life you change your field and now I am a psyche nurse in Albany. It is true you learn a great deal of flexibility in Nursing school that you could actually fit in wherever you want to be. :roll
  13. That was a real long thread and I do understand how one could be pissed off hearing somebody else beside you talking in another language and of course you get a little paranoid thinking they are talking about you..I apologize for my fellow Filipinos. it just happen that there are really some times that we get tired of having a long day speaking in english. lol. :) I hope i will not stumble on being discriminated..I have been working here for only 3 months and I could say my co-workers accepted me regardless of my race. My preceptor recognized the sacrifices a Filipino has to make, to make it here..leaving the family behind..the weather and the language barrier. I understand her when she added that she gets pissed off that the hospital has to hire foreign nurses and we are actually taking away jobs from citizens here. I was not at all offended bec it is true. But we cannot forget the fact that we are augmenting the shortage. That is another story... As a Filipino I always keep in mind that in one way or another I am representing my country and I should be professional and flexible. Besides it is me who decided to move here so might as well accept the consequences and when it gets hotter in the kitchen why not leave...
  14. you scared me guys...im planning to take the nclex on march and just reading your posts made my heart beats faster as if I'm the one who took it..wish you the best

Hello I'm a foreign educated nurse waiting for licensure exam in NY. Fortunate to land in a job here and get assigned in a psche unit. I've been here for almost three months and indeed having a great time. I never knew how nice it is to be a psyche nurse. I just hope I could keep the fire burning as in my enthusiasm in my work right now. Any suggestions?? thanks;)
