Asking for a Raise
Thanks for all your comments and thoughts. to @Altra, you said "Also consider -- as a nurse with only one year of experience, why do you believe you are worth more compensation than another nurse in your unit?" My point is because my colleague has the same year of experience as I do and he will be moving to another hospital, and so I am tempted to do the same as there are opportunities there too last time I checked so before I start applying to other hospitals, I would like to ask my current place of work if they can bump the salary up to match the other(s) opportunity in the market.

Asking for a Raise
Hello, I've been at my current hospital for more than 7 months now and have in total 1 year and 2 months of experience. My co-worker who also has the same experience applied to a new position from another hospital and got a salary base of approx 15% more. He has therefore tendered his resignation. My question is can I request from my hospital a pay increase of more or less the same as my friend who got the new job ? How should I phrase my letter to state that I like my current job but another opportunity may be open and instead of me leaving (and their cost of re-hiring/re-training,etc) , it might be for their best interest to give me a raise of 10% to 15% raise ? Apparently, their yearly increase of current employees from what I heard is about 2 to 3 %. Please I just want to know your opinion on how to approach the raise and no flaming because of this or that about people without having jobs, etc. I am just looking for myself / my family and looking at it from a market/opportunity perspective. Thanks for reading this and look forward to your thoughts !

Should I Worry About Future of CRNAs?
RN boom is comparable to housing because back in 2000s (from late 1990s to mid 2000) so called RN shortage was crazy to say the least--hospitals were recruiting RNs from the Philippines, Colombia, India, etc. ; Giving them Green cards, bringing them here with signing bonuses (up to $20K), paid accomodations, etc. Mt Sinai Hospital here in Miami is a case in point. They built an apartment type complex to house their nurses during the boom times. Today, it sits there empty together with a hospital they purchased. As far as gaswork tabulations is concerned, the earliest period I got was May 12, 2010 (when I started gathering the data) and it still showed 663. Given a month or so, the gap of -26.3% is still too big to account for seasonality. Another thing to consider is that when everyone thinks CRNA is a lucrative thing to enter and everyone does it--just like when everyone thinks that buying a home is a foolproof investment and I was hearing people saying, "Home prices only go up." --that was time to beware and get out. My Point is you should go for the profession you're passionate at so that even with a hit to your income, you wont regret doing it. Just my .02

Should I Worry About Future of CRNAs?
I understand your concern and all 4 of your points are valid. I made a tally of gaswork.com job postings for more than a year. Back in July 1, 2010, there were 689 job postings, on Mar 27, 2011, there were 484 job postings--a drop of 29.7% in less than 9 months. It seems that every Tom, Dick, and Nancy with an RN wants to be a CRNA and schools are sprouting and just accepting everyone left and right. CRNA boom, just like the once RN and the US Housing Boom, could turn into an ugly CRNA bust someday.

Remington College of Nursing - Orlando
Hello guys, I dont want to rein in the party but for those aspiring RNs-to-be, its tough out there to land a job. Our MDC graduating class July 2010, only 30% or so has had jobs. Considering these are accelerated RNs with past employment history--I've got a 10+ years of experience bilingual Cuban Doctor who just turned RN--very brilliant with good personality--could not land a job and he has been applying everywhere. Just a food for thought and want you guys to be realistic especially for those of you who will be incurring $30K+ in loans + the aggravation of the Nursing school (God knows how it was one hell of a year).... Nursing career is not what it used to be. Ask yourself--Will the loan + aggravation be worth it if you cannot find a job ? Read all the posts here about new RNs --some even dating back May 2009--not having found a job.

I am in the Miami Dade College Accelerated Program and yes, I can assure you our program is as hard or perhaps even harder than yours. Our entering class' GPA is the highest so far in their history at 3.85 but out of 50 entering students, 13 flunked within the first 2 semesters. But at least for Miami Dade program, its very cheap at $5K for the whole program and for most of us, even free due to workforce program. So we're basically tolerating the Miami Dade crappiness because its free and cheap. I just cannot imagine myself paying $36K and be treated like what Rad was saying how she and her other classmates are being treated.

Anyone starting RN at Miami Dade College Fall 2009?
No idea about the ATI student account-- I guess we are all just too anxious and giddy as others are keeping it cool and not worrying too much about it :-))) Based on ppl's posts, it seems not a lot of Accelerated Programmers (accepted for Fall of 2009) are posting either. If there are 50 spots--are there only 5 who are here in allnurses (Mommy'sgirl, ProspectiveMDC, Rostata, Montero and myself) ?

Miami Dade College
Hello Fellow MDCers, I got accepted for Fall 2009 Accelerated Program -- Yoo hoo ! ! ! Wanted to ask you guys about apartment hunting strategy. Since I am from Tampa and thinking of moving to Miami perhaps 1 or 2 days before classes--wondering how and where can I find good apartments at a good price ? I perused sites such as Craigslist, Apartment.com, rent.com and forrent.com but its freaking overwhelming... too many listings and dont know where to start ! ! ! Due to my distance, cant do much legwork/inspection except during orientation, so was wondering how you guys managed this process ? When I went to Business School back in UVA, it was so easy as there is a private apt complex basically walking distance to school so that is a nobrainer, even coming from an out-of-stater. However, in MDC, good places are not in walking distance, am I right ? My thinking is just dont want to be stuck in traffic going to or coming home from school/clinical sites. Any suggestions on a good apartment--furnished is preferable but unfurnished is fine too (perhaps your apartment complex, etc.) and best location that is not too far from school/clinical sites ? Thanks in advance for your tips and advice.

Any Miami Dade College students going for the acceler. or Generic option fall 2009?
Thanks OnEaglesWIngs for the apt tip. Will look into the area on orientation day. RMO1809 -- hang in there ... good things happen especially as your GPA is very close. Even if you dont receive any letters... its still a good sign as you're not rejected.... Ppl sometimes will not accept so you're in good position.. Mommy'sgirl, Montero and others who have done this--I have some questions on the background check issue-- 1) Did you prepay online in the myappt.mymdc.net prior to scheduling ? Or did you pay directly at the campus' bursar's office and then schedule ? 2) So basically, its just a fingerprinting session right ? Once done, they will send it to School of Nursing and we dont have to wait for pick up ? Need to know to see if I should stay overnight when I will be doing those things. Thanks in advance for your comments.

Thanks Marggie, Mortero, 30NCN, Shen06, Rostata, EmpressT, Mommy'sGirl for the kind words ! Yes--the letter has a lot of stuff to do--darn and I may have to go to Miami (from Tampa) just to pay the $100 deposit and submit response form--ANd then again for the June 23 Orientation plus 24th test. Not that I am complaining--just like you Daisy. :-))) Best of luck to all ! ! ! For those who is still waiting--dont lose hope ! There is still a chance ! Life is a journey so enjoy---A door may close on you but a window will be open ! Sounds cheesy but its true.

Any Miami Dade College students going for the acceler. or Generic option fall 2009?
Guys, Checked my mailbox and accepted into the Accelerated program with a 3.8 ...whew... basically.. just enough to get in. If you guys are correct that this year's minimum is a 3.8... Cannot believe it...Thank GOD for that ! Shen, 30NCN, Olofin, and the rest still waiting... dont lose hope... just think about it.. you guys are still young. Try to take classes that can get you to at least a 3.8 or above. Look at me, Im freaking 38. Just think about that and you guys will feel much better. Mommysgirl... can you please PM me about the list of good profs/classes ? Thank you in advance and LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU GUYS in Orientation and subsequent Fall classes ! ! !

Your acceptance letter probably needs to be picked up as they dont want to waste postage due to budget cuts...... We need to just keep it cool and stay positive. Did you apply for the accelerated or Generic ? I only applied for the accelerated.
