  1. I have been nursing 7 yrs. in med surg i have found that you take report, brush up on meds (which will tell you a lot about the pt's history), labs, then go see pt's. HaVING a good report sheet to right on is essential and sticky notes for reminders are good also. Just keep on hanging on
  2. I agree with the abx. With my own experience with chronic sinus problems, if I use OTC meds and other methods, I will not need an abx. Comfort measures and treating the symptoms sometimes are what is needed
  3. I use a fan but you can get apps on your smart phone that puts out some white noise. you can hook it up to your charger or to speakers that charge the phone while it plays.
  4. I have to admit that if I had to idolize someone, it would be based on family which includes 2 nurses, 1 teacher, a secatary, and a mechanic. Basically know what your doing and do it well
  5. I have had to get transcripts from 2 different colleges and never had any problem. The one I just attened a few classes at I went to their office and got a copy of my transcripts not long after the classes were finished. The school I graduated from I had to wail a little while but got it. Even now with both schools all I would have to do is either call or go to campus and get whatever info I need
  6. This is a situation where open and honest communcation between pt and doc and other medical personnel is imperitive. Educated yourself as to what is going on
  7. Thank you for telling us about your brother. I became a nurse in my late 20's. I learned before this when I worked in retail to pay attention to those with disabilities. I got several thank yous for going that extra step or two to make people feel welcome. The deaf customers liked me because I would take extra time with them, despite the fact that we could only communeicate thru writing
  8. It was my experience that my OB was willing to work with me. My dtr was breech so I agreed to the csection. Whin I had my son, I was able to do vbac, although I had to be induced with him. My son was an 8 pounder. I stated I would have a csection with my son if needed but I would rather not if I could avoid it and the OB was agreeable
  9. Thank you so much for the tips. Even those of us with nursing experience should go over pointers and webpages that help us with out charting.
  10. Most hospitals where I have worked as agency and staff have had the non smoking policy on campus. But most of the staff and MDs realized that we cannot keep a person in their rooms if they are mobile. At the hospital I'm working at now we offer a nicotine patch but the pt has a right to refuse. MRSA is explained to the pt. But if the pt wants to get outside, it is their right.
  11. We had a patient the other night whose family signed her out ama. She had had an MI and other comorbitidys and she became so confused and violent to staff the it was considered wise to restrain her. The family did not like this and wanted to transfer her to another hospital in a town about an hour away. The doc at the other hospital would not take her. So the family decided to take her home. The doc caring for her at our hospital said if they can take care of her at home (so they think) then send here home. I'm waiting to see if I know how long they last
  12. Male patients may feel more comfortable talking about some things or getting a bath from a male nurse. If a man is modest around a female nurse, I understand, being a woman. There are some things I don't understand about men and there are things about women that men don't understand. It is nothing do to with head knowledge but with gut feeling. That is why nurses and doctors should be of all sexes, orientations, religions.
  13. I agree that your not too old. Get your Rn then go from there. You may love being a nurse and continue from there or you may work as a Rn for a while then get you md. I was 32 when I got my RN. I'm 35 now and am planning getting my BSN within the next 2 yrs. I am seriously considering becoming a forsenic pathologist
  14. I went from retail into nursing. 2 of my sisters are nurses so I guess it was natural that I be one. I'm really enjoying it, espicelly with the job I have now. But you can get burnt out on this job just like anything else. If it is affecting your health, choose something else. I understand
  15. Do CNA first. I went from retail to nursing. If you get an idea of what nursing entails, you may make a better decision. I enjoy the job I have now but I would have been better in a library
  16. Always use precautions and get help when lefting.
  17. I've worked days and nights in by ccu. It's a smaller ccu so it doesn't really matter which you work. The most you get pt wise would be 4 since it is a 4 bedder. But I prefer nights because it's just more settled with fewer people in and out. Our doctors can be in and out till 1 or 2 in the morning so we can deal with MDS all the time. Just keep in mind that things get crazy at night, with crazy things happining in the er and codes (which one of the CCU nurses have to help with). Admits can come in at any time of the day or night. But I love nights because I don't sleep well at night. There is no way I can feel like getting up to be at work at 630 in the morning and feel like working.
