What do you love most about your floor/specialty?
Wow, I'm so glad so many of you love your jobs! Some of those areas you work in aren't even available anywhere near where I live now! I just finished precepting on the surgical floor, and I really liked the work and the relationships the nurses have with each other is awesome. The next rotation is Maternal/Child and I can't wait because that is what I planned on going into from the time I decided to go back to school for nursing! I hope it doesn't disappoint.

Two questions...
Wow, I can't believe that when I joined this forum I had just decided to go back to school, and now, here I am 3 months away from graduating! So, just wondering...How long did you wait to take NCLEX after graduating and how long did it take you to find a job?

What do you love most about your floor/specialty?
I am in my last semester of school and was wondering what you love most about the area of nursing you work in? If you can't stand where are you working then where do you want to work? Thanks! Laura

Shy Nurse
I don't like the whole doing stuff in front of a bunch of other people either. . . but I made it this far, and I've made it through semester 1! I am fine one on one with a client. I like to know that I know what I'm doing, and that helps me to feel more confident. Yes the nursing school presentations still suck. . . but no worse than the presentations we have done all through middle and high school and heck my first degree. I can't say I have ever "gotten over it" but ultimately it's not going to count that much towards whether you pass or fail or even if you will be a good nurse or not, just get through it and learn what you need to learn out of it. I know for me that once I am graduated and practicing (fingers crossed!) it will be like any other job that you have trained for and slowly but surely get more comfortable in.

Quick Question About a Loan, please!
I took out an actual loan for the first time for this Fall too. I qualified without a problem, some subsidized, some not. . I only accepted the subsidized part though. I did everything I needed to do like you did, counseling, MPN, ect. The only think I needed to do besides those things was actually tell the financial aid person that I wanted to be considered for a student loan because when I initially applied for aid (Pell Grant) I had selected that I didn't need a loan. It doesn't seem like many people get denied though so I'm sure you will be fine!

I fainted today in the ICU!
I fainted in my anatomy lab last semester while the teacher was pointing out muscles on a cadaver leg. Mentally I was absolutely fine, there was nothing about the cadaver that bothered me! I can only assume the smell of the chemicals got into my head and that's what caused it. It was very embaressing and the first time (hopefully only....) that I have passed out. I was standing, leaning against a table, so when I passed out I just fell back onto the table...but when I "woke up" I was sitting in a chair a few feet away...how did they get me into the chair...I don't want to know, but I am embaressed thinking about it! I hope it's not a sign of things to come, that's for sure!

Placenta/cord question...
Do thorough placental pathology exams come at a cost to the parents?
-
Placenta/cord question...
That's good to hear the majority do them, from what I've read the autopsy rate has been declining.
-
Placenta/cord question...
I'm writng an argumentative research paper and this question came to mind in the midst of it... In the case of a fetal demise, at any gestation, is the placenta and cord taken to have a thorough examination done? or does the doctor give in a once over and that's it? Also, are fetal autopsies routinely done in your hospitals? Are they encouraged or discouraged? What information are the parents given on them? Thanks!!

How does your facility deal with fetal demise?
Do you happen to know the names of those children's books?
- Para or Gravida

Para or Gravida
Yeah I was wondering about that...I knew miscarriages were spontaneous abortions...but medically isn't an abortion different than a spontaneous abortion? Your body naturally having an abortion versus an induced abortion..hmm. But than what about stillbirth. My guess would be it counts as a pregnancy but is omitted in living children...? But does it count in the term or preterm category?

Para or Gravida
Do you/Where do you count miscarriages and stillbirths in these systems?

Medical termination of pregnancy.
What is a "PROMed chorio" patient?

Survey about Cytotec
I can't answer these questions as a nurse, of course, but I was just recently given Cytotec for my IUFD. First, I was not asked to sign a consent form for this, had I known anything about it I might have refused and asked for a different method of induction, the only thing my doctor told me about this drug he was placing was the name of it and that it was originally used for treating ulcers but that they have found it effective in inducing labor. It was also not very effective for me though. Doctor placed it PV, not sure exactly how big that dose was, but then I was given it PO every 4 hours (nurses only allowed to do PO not PV - the nurse told the doctor this while in my room - he didn't know..lol) I was only given a quarter of a tablet at first, but it wasn't working, so they started giving me a half a tablet for a while, then 3/4, and I think I ended up having a full tablet two times (broken in little pieces - cuz the night shift nurse wanted me to hold them under my tongue and let them absorb that way - it did work better that way than swallowing them) I'm pretty sure I only had it placed PV that first time, the doctor might have done it again the next day but I don't think so...I was worried about so many other things at the time to think about that. My doctor is a family practice doctor. After he placed the Cytotec he went back to his office, so he didn't stay in house. I actually feel a little cheated right now that nobody told me anything about this drug when they were giving it to me. Obviously my baby's safety was not a concern, but I would have probably chosen a method of induction that was a little more protective of my uterus if that was possible...I want to keep that around and functioning properly for a while! That being said...I didn't have any major side effects from it, and I'm sure if it wasn't a IUFD situation they might not have given me that much of it! Laura

Job opening says "RN Required"
I wouldn't personally apply without my license either, even for a graduate nurse position. Mainly because if for some reason I failed the NCLEX I would be terribly embaressed and not able to work again til I passed it. But like I said, I am hardly a new grad. lol I haven't even started actual nursing classes yet..just scoping things out I guess. I am waiting to see if all these positions will be filled with the class of soon to be new graduates. There are currently 18 RN positions open - 5 of them in "Surgical" I know the hospital does it's own new RN training program prior to an actual Unit-specific orientation so I am assuming new RN's can take these positions.
-
Job opening says "RN Required"
So does that mean a new grad would have to pass the NCLEX Before applying and getting interviewed/accepted to the position? I am hardly a new grad yet but I know that there is a class of graduates about to graduate soon and there are only a couple hospitals in the area and the job listings for RN's are not getting filled. The page is updated weekly so I know that is not the issue. There was an opening last week for "Graduate Nurse" that is no longer there, so I am assuming you can apply for that job without having passed the NCLEX yet. I'm just trying to figure out if this is the reason why these jobs have been open for months at least.
