  1. boyfriend with cardiac problems

Hi, I need some expert advice. I have met a guy thru online dating and he is having some cardiac problems. I need some advice about the nature/severity of his issues before I jump into a relationship. We are both in early 50's, exercise, no smoking, ...
  2. Time between graduation & NP job

Hi all -- I graduate in a few months as a PMHNP and have started the job search. I interviewed for a private practice job in an office that takes insurance & found out that it takes at least 3 months to become credentialed with the insurance com...
  3. Time between graduation & NP job

Thx for suggestions. There are no RNs at this practice office as far as I can see. I really don't want to go back to the place where I've worked as an RN -- it's really gone downhill -- I think I will look for PRN work.
  4. How dressy in PA for interview?

I have my first new grad interview at Lehigh Valley -- and I just moved here (from Louisiana!) so I am unsure how to dress for it. In the South, my classmates were wearing nice dress pants with a button-down shirt but not a suit. Is it more dressy he...
  5. The Lowdown on Austin Hospitals

My husband is being transferred to Austin, and I couldn't be more thrilled. I am originally from there many years ago. Anyway, can someone fill me in on the hospitals to work at in Austin. I have 2 years med-surg and 1 year of per-diem psych at a sta...
  6. New Grads at RWJUH

Can anyone tell me how to contact RWJUH to apply as a new grad. I have looked at their web site and it has no contact info for HR and all the job postings are for experienced RNs. I'm assuming they do hire new grads, I hope! It looks like a big regio...
  7. I am a second-career nursing student and I am a CPA. I am wondering if I should keep paying for my CPA license. Are there nursing positions that I would really need a license for? I understand that there are jobs where a background as a CPA would be ...
  8. Eating Disorders

Thanks, Palemoon, I've been in your shoes & you put my thoughts into words so well. Treat me as a PERSON with an illness, not some freak with an "I don't really think it's an illness" thing going on.
  9. sex in the work place...really?

At the psych hospital I work per diem, two of the young adults were caught 69'ing. Every single person in the facility knew about it by the next day. The sick thing is, the next time I was on that unit, the guy (patient) was mentioning it in conversa...
  10. home health in austin

Can you say more about sps in austin?
  11. The Lowdown on Austin Hospitals

ITA. I get $45 an hour now for weekend per diem work, some of the nurses I work with are getting $50 an hour days per diem at Overlook, a large NJ hospital near here. It will be an adjustment but SOOOOOO worth it. I'd choose Austin over NJ any day.
  12. Info on Austin State Hospital

That's exactly the info I was looking for. Actually, I would prefer to work part-time so it sounds like I'll be able to do that. And maybe even day shift! That's great news. thanks!
  13. Info on Austin State Hospital

Can anyone fill me in on how the Austin State Hospital (psych) hires nurses? We are moving to Texas in June and I currently work at a state psych hospital here in NJ. I see that ASH has a permanent job listing for nurses & states that they will h...
  14. The Lowdown on Austin Hospitals

Thanks for those posts. That gives me lots of ideas. I just got a special gig at the Psych hospital doing all their wound care, so I'll be able to put that on my resume too. I hope I'll be able to move into a specialty area. I'm growing a little tire...
  15. The "woes" of 12 hr. Shifts

I agree, there are pro's and con's. I combine the best of both worlds: I work the Baylor program part-time, just Sat./Sun. and do 12's. Then I work per diem on Mon. and Tues. somewhere else and do 8's. I am always home on school nights for my kids. W...
  16. The Lowdown on Austin Hospitals

OP here, I just wanted to give this a bump. We are leaning towards sending my kids to St. Andrew's school so looking at homes in that area, which is close to several hospitals. Looks to me like my big choices are Seton and St. David's, and Dell Child...
  17. Where to buy scrubs in NJ?

Once you get your sizes straight, I would recommend ordering online from AllHeart.com. They have a HUGE selection and some great sales. I have gotten tops -- stylish ones -- for less than $10. And they often will email me coupons.
  18. What do I say to rude patients?

It amazes me how unrealistic some patients are about how much attention they should receive. We are not their personal assistants, sent there to hold their hand and listen for an hour about how tough it is to be sick in the hospital. A man in his 50'...
  19. Define mandatory overtime

What is mandatory overtime? Is it when they schedule the nurses for the weeks' work, you are assigned to more than 40 hours in a week? or is it this: at the end of your shift, if they need you because someone else didn't show up or the hospital is ju...
  20. Current students in Chamberlain Online RN-BSN

I am down to my last 2 classes. There are only 3 courses that have any "experiential" component. In Community Health, you have to select 4 local agencies and then interview the director and write it up. No big deal. In Collaborative Healthcare, you h...
  21. PMHNP schools in/around Austin

Terrific! UT is actually my alma mater from my first degree. Would love to go back there. We should move in about a year, if things fall into place according to plan. Hopefully something will be available by then.
  22. PMHNP schools in/around Austin

My husband told me that he may be transferred next summer to Texas and you cannot IMAGINE how happy I will be to return to Texas. We will live in Austin. The only problem is that I am planning to start Psych NP school about that time and I see that U...
  23. Allright, I really think nursing is for me but I have this real queasiness relating to needles, especially IV's. I have fainted before when they take blood from me. I am OK with other things - I have watched them stitch up my kids cuts and things lik...
  24. Working as a stripper AND a nurse

The post has generated a lot of interesting conversation, but I have to say I think the OP was yanking our chain. I've known women who did this as their profession and they never referred to themselves as strippers. They always said dancers. I think ...
  25. Juvenile sexual offenders

Look at the stickys at the top of this forum for sites. They are not specific to sex offenders, but I thought they were great general psych. The videos especially.
