  1. I've done it a couple of times. My first time my boss called me and asked what I was doing. "Nothing much". She asked if I was going to work that night. "Nope". "Ummm, why not" "because I'm not scheduled to ooooooohhhhh shiiiiiit" Mistakes hap...
  2. I hate nursing

Not allately nursing is the same. You could look around during for other opportunities, such as MDS coordinator, school nursing, private duty nursing. Sounds like you might be a little burned out and needing a break from nursing entirely. Indica...
  3. Georgetown University 2015

Congratulations! I am in the process of applying for the September cohort, but not sure if I'll be able to make the cut. Hopefully . . . .
  4. Ive had no problems with eduKan transfer, but ive only attended Kansas colleges since. I've also transferred other online courses without difficulty. I dont think it will be a problem since you are getting an online education anyway.
  5. Sorry doc, but if you truly believe that only white males are worthwhile, you need to move to a different hospital. Around here, we treat people equally, regardless of race or gender.
  6. Archetypes in Nursing

We have a rotating "Sh*t Magnet*. When this person starts her shift, the ER's magically come rolling in and the formerly stable patients either code, crump, fall down, become acutely confused/combative. Nobody wants to work with the "Sh*t Magnet* a...
  7. Reminds me of the diarrhea patient we had who refused to take Questran or Immodium because "it won't work anyway". I guess i should have said, "Let me get this straight. You're refusing medication, refusing to eat or drink anything, and you want to ...
  8. Learn To Say It Correctly!!

I hope ya'll will forgive me for mispronouncing words i've never heard in my entire life. In nursing school, my instructors would not correct students who listed "Malaysia" as a symptom. I just had to sit and cringe through that and fat-ee-gyoo. I...
  9. I work with several CNA's who will not stop their texting/checking email/planning vacations to answer call lights and actually get defensive with me when i ask them to do their jobs. I don't thank these people at all. I also work with several CNA's ...
  10. Night Shift: What are your sleep patterns?

I try to go to bed right after work at sleep for at least 4-5 hours. I used to work 3 12's and that's fine if you can work 3 in a row, then have several days off. One off one on is incredibly difficult to do. But after 3 12's, i go to bed the last ...
  11. how do you keep your sexy??

My sexiness comes from my smile and compassionate nature. My hair is pulled back, makeup to a minimum, no perfume, and professional-looking scrubs. Not that anything is wrong with needing to feel sexy as a woman. I've just learned over the years i...
  12. how much do you make an hour/year?

Base pay for new RN grads is $18/hr where i work. Sad, but true.
  13. Male vs. Female Nurses

This is based on the number of people who want to be nurses for the scary reasons - who view nursing as a way to land a rich mate. There is a difference between this and a good nurse who happens to fall in love with a doctor.
  14. Share your "problem patient" stories!

We have a few frequent fliers in the ER with strange diagnoses, usually found on Web MD. One was disoriented and weak until the nurse went to help her put her shoes on. She kicked the nurse and told her it was her "Restless Leg Syndrome". The nurs...
  15. Male vs. Female Nurses

There are a few nurses, mostly female, who go into nursing to: a. marry a rich doctor b. for the prestige of being a nurse c. for the big paycheck and financial stability These are some of the scariest nurses and men tend not to enter the field fo...
  16. Lighting at night

With the lights dimmed, i can still do a very basic assessment, give IV meds and even program the pumps (by feel). If the patient sleeps through it or barely wakes up, all the better.
  17. Nursing, the field of medicine or customer service?

Sorry, i work with a few nurses who just blast in to the patient's room, flip on the lights and do what they need to do. I realize that not everybody does this. It's not something i learned in nursing school, but it does make a world of difference.
  18. Learn To Say It Correctly!!

My patients usually go a step further and get "the sugar diabetes" . . . as opposed to the sweet-n-low diabetes? It's cute, though.
  19. Nursing, the field of medicine or customer service?

80% of our overnight family members actually help us out with identifying the dementia patient's normal mental status, remembering medical history, knowing the patient's allergies, feeding the patient, fetching coffee, ringing the call light when the...
  20. A coworker needed to cath a very obese female. The nurse pulled up the patient's belly and instructed the patient, "you're going to have to hold this until i can get the catheter in". She honestly didn't have enough hands to hold the patient's bel...
  21. ~~NIGHT SHIFT~~

I've had to learn to eat through the night. My blood sugar dropped while starting an IV. I just held onto the untaped site, sat down on the floor and had my partner come rescue me. BS was 28 and i'm not normally hypoglycemic. But since i sleep du...
  22. ALMOST PASSED OUT

A friend of mine watched a newborn circ with me and passed out right after telling me "that wasn't so bad". She went on to observe two c-sections that day.
  23. LVN or RN? Help!

What about getting your LVN and then later picking up your RN? There are lots of LVN to RN programs available.
