Overheard at the nurse's station
9:20 pm by mindlor "any of ya'll have 8 pts on a busy med surge floor?" yes i do, it takes all of 1 minute to put a patient on the bedpan. it's called teamwork; while we have 8 pts the aid has 16...put the patient on the bedpan, have the aid take them off. mission accomplished.

Giving Report...Please help.
your report will come with time. when I first started I went through the systems (cardio, resp, GI etc) any psychosocial, then what ever you missed. once you become more experienced your report will come much easier. I found this to be one of the hardest parts of being a new nurse. ask your colleges for pointers and if they have questions, give it time. good luck :)

Why do Doctors think they are................God!!
A co-worker of mine got yelled at for calling the on-call dr because of a high blood pressure. The Pt's blood pressure was 200's/100's; the Dr's response: why in god's name would anyone check a blood pressure in the middle of the night, now I'll have to do something about it. absolutely ridiculous, we work on a busy general medicine floor, many of our patients are in bad shape. So: YES dr we will continue to check vitals in the middle of the night.

Please help me figure out what happened to my pt
We aren't talking about break issues; you asked what happened to your patient and we are simply giving an answer. The extended breaks could have been what happened to your patient. its not a matter of giving a good report to who's covering its a matter of staying with your patients. like it was mentioned before I would be interested to see the mortality rate of this hospital.

Please help me figure out what happened to my pt
no offense but a 2 hour break to sleep on a night shift in my opinion is unsafe. Sleep before you come to work, only you truly know your patients and a covering nurse might not notice a change. Patients need to be monitored more closely at night secondary to having less staff, not left so their nurses can sleep. Theres a reason hospitals are open 24 hours, because people can become sick not only during the day, but at night as well. I've worked nights for 2 years and I would never dream of leaving my patients for an hour, never mind two.

Too young to be a nurse??
I went to school right out of high school and graduated with my BSN @ 20. I had my first job by 21. There are always few who have issues with age differences but not bad overall. You're smart going early trust me it's worth it!

What is the maximum number of patients per nurse?
I'm on a 38 bed general medicine floor day shift RNs have 4-5 patients with 5 aids on the floor, same for evenings night shift RNs have 6-7 patients with 3-4 aids on the floor, we never have more than 7 patients at night

New Grad RN Positions
I went to school up in boston and was determined to stay there! but the job market had other plans. I grew up in RI so i started putting my applications in through lifespan, its RI hospital, miriam hospital and newport hospital. I ended up getting a job at RI hospital, I guess I just lucked out because its hard to get in there. don't give up! it took me 8 months to find a job after graduation but you can do it! Good luck!

MCPHS Worcester, anyone attend??
i didn’t attend mcp in worcester but i went in boston and graduated in may of 2009. i wouldn’t recommend their program, but i hear the other campuses are much more organized so it could be an entirely different experience for you than it was for me. the boston campus was very disorganized and we constantly felt like we were part of some bigger research program...overall it wasn’t a good experience but we made it through, but it was a learning experience that’s for sure! best of luck to you and let me know how it goes!

any H1N1 on your floor yet?
I work on a 32 bed gen med floor in boston and we've had multiple cases over the past few months. These people get really sick, I'm just waiting for our vaccines to arrive! (we were all required to get the regular flu shot so that over and done with at least!)

Do friends outside of nursing school give you a hard time?
yes i know exactly where you are coming from. I find it very hard to relate to others who are not currently in my program. I am in a 33 month accellerated program so its even faster than most. You find out who your real friends are, and who is willing to stick it out with you. Hang in there, you will hopefully find great support from thoes in your class! It is very hard to explain or reason with people who are not going through this as well. Keep your head up though, it will all pay off in the end

MCPHS Spring 2009
I just want to second what was said about the MCPHS School of Nursing (Boston) ...I would not recommend this program to anyone. I hear the Worchester and Manchester campuses are much better so good luck to all of you! But just a little overview about the Boston campus for those who are interested... The program is too new at this point and honestly is falling to pieces due to constant unorganization. The faculty has very different view about how the program should be run which causes tension amongst themselves causing further disruption of our education. I can honestly say that little goes right in this program; students are often treated unfairly and there is little respect between most faculty and students. Clinical sites and schedules are always a mess and are constantly changed with little advance notice. We still do not have placements for our next clinical rotations, which start in two weeks. And there is so much more... I just strongly advise anyone considering this school to look elsewhere for another nursing program, if you are looking in the Boston area I hear Simmons College and Northeastern University both have great programs. Any other questions please let me know and I will be happy to answer them. I graduate in May of 2009 and I can not be happier that it is almost over.
